I can only imagine Gigout wrote this piece with the Notre Dame organ in mind. I hope restoration is completed in my lifetime so I can get the chance to hear this piece played live.

He was the organist at Saint Augustin, and studied with Saint-Saëns who was the organist at Saint Sulpice, so more likely either one of those organs. Given the time of composition, the Saint Augustin organ is more likely.

This is fabulous. While I agree that the piece can certainly be played slower to excellent effect, I feel it ABSOLUTELY works at this breakneck speed also, because a) the figuration is simple and basically unimportant - much if it is ordinary arpeggios upward and downward, and b) the harmonic movement is slow enough that not much at all gets lost in THAT area by playing it super-fast. Plus, I play the piece myself - it's quite easy, and basically a very attractive piece of fluff - so if you can't play THIS super-fast, what CAN you play that way?? ;-)
@charlesdavis580210 жыл бұрын
I would like to know what you call "fluff". Dear Bradley, what great works do you like to play or listen to? I would really like to know. After 40 years I'm still a student. What to do think of Ethel Smith's "Tico, Tico."? Or have you ever heard her play it before. Never the less; What do you think of the Gert Hoef? You're right. The tempos was a little fast… but it worked in the room. Anybody can get all the notes right.. But to make the work sing….. that's another story. Sent with love. CVD

I guess the name Gigout Toccata sounds like it can be played in any fashion that the organist likes. Anyway, this is very, very well done!
"Better"? Tough question. French organs (especially from the Romantic era) have a sound that is completely distinct from those built by English organ-builders. Likewise, Dutch & German (which is generally divided into Northern & Southern sub-regions). There are, of course, "good" organs & "bad" organs, in the eyes(ears?) of organ afficionados. But the judgments are so subjective, esoteric & exotic, it's impossible to list the criteria. Both ND & St. P's are huge instruments that fill the room

@dinokralt I agree with your point. While classical/organ music evokes deeper emotions and thought, that is it's goal. Pop music expresses different emotion and evokes different emotions than classical music does. If they evoked the same emotions and thoughts, then their genres would not be so different.
@a55b4714 жыл бұрын
@chrishuffaolcom I'll second that. Not only can you hear these overwhelming instruments much better in person, you can actually feel them breath. It's almost if there's a living thing that has taken over the building.

Amazing piece....It's just as much fun trying to learn it....it may take a lot of work to get it right, but it is the best piece yet.
Yes it did, it dates from 1973. ("Grandes Toccatas à Notre-Dame de Paris", in it's CD Philips reissue of 1996!) You are now in Cochereau; the Absolute Inspiration -and Human Master, the French, ex-eaquo to American Virgil Fox, Master of the Organ-; Solstice, and his assistant François Carbou did fantastic recordings of his Impros for posterity until his death in 1984. Cochereau showing us perhaps how the (Symphonic) organ was able to passion crowds, and people. JW, Thanks.
Mon plus regret, c'est qu'il soit décédé juste au moment où il devait donner un concert à Marseille, il y a déjà quelques années en arrière... Je doute qu'il ait donné cette pièce, mais, vraiment, c'est Le géant de l'orgue...

Well, the damage isn't as extensive as we had feared. No damage from smoke & heat & very little water damage. A statement from Vincent Dubois, one of the three organistes titulaires at NDP "Contrary to the rumors that circulated early this morning, the great organ is, a priori, saved. There are a few puddles on the left and right, but nothing dramatic. The case would be spared, as well as the pipe work... It's miraculous. We were in contact all night with my colleagues Olivier Latry and Philippe Lefebvre and we no longer believed in it. The stone roof slab that connects the two towers saved the instrument: there is no frame there from the roof, so the water sent by the fire brigade flowed on either side and did not fall on the organ loft. On the other hand, if the vaults of the nave, very weakened, are not quickly consolidated, it will probably be necessary to dismantle the organ and find a workshop large enough to shelter it. There is no such system in the Paris region. The challenge is to know very quickly whether the keystones will withstand the weight of the water and molten lead that has been poured into them. The choir organ did not burn either, but it did take on water completely. We'll have to see what's left of it... It'll take years before we can play this instrument again, but the most important thing was that it didn't end up in ashes. We will be patient and mobilize for its rehabilitation, once it has been closely examined."
Don't shoot me, but does this seem a little zippy? I know it should not plod, but I'm missing some of the glorious counter runs because they are blurring. Just me??

I don't think your metronome annotation is Gigout's, it's probably the editor's. My score (Edward B. Marks - Ed. Robert Leech Bedell) only says 'Allegro'. In older music the metronome indications are by the editors most of the time, and even if they are the composer's, it is a know fact that some composers had metronomes that gave the wrong tempo.
@albertpeckham951511 жыл бұрын
Me thinks that the work of "many" hands has had a detrimental effect on the instrument, The Cavaille-Coll sound has been basically lost. To hear that cohesive sound that Cavaille Coll was/is famous for, one only has to go 60 miles n/w of Paris to the Abbey at Rouen!
@at0mcollision5 жыл бұрын
It lost its symphonic Cavaillé-Coll sound in the 60s, but it sounded much better after the restoration in the 90s. In the most recent restoration, most of the non-CC stops were moved to a floating division.

There are many magnificent organs in the world - my favorite is the organ at the Syracuse Univ. School of Music built for the professor in the early 50's to his specs - fabulous instrument. But, again, the Magdeburg that Bach himself played and wrote for is still in working order, and can teach one a great deal about the tempi Bach had in mind.

First time I've heard Cochereau play this piece. Although his virtuosity is plain to hear I thought the pace provided no new texture or understanding to the music. that's because it's being played too fast, and with the reverberation within the Cathedral, all the ornamentation becomes a muddy mess. Tempo needs to be gauged according to the instrument and accoustics, and while the performer has dazzling keyboard technique, the musical performance suffers because of the response of the pipes and the reverberation within the Cathedral
