I've noticed so many of you have been asking me recently wether you should go for the Sony A7II or A7III, so I really hope today's video is helpful in making that decision a little easier! Like I mentioned in the video, both are amazing cameras fully capable of taking great photos but there are a few factors to consider depending on what kind of photography you want to pursue :)
If you're after a photoshoot behind the scenes, here's one I did on the Sony A7iii with the Sigma 855.. f1.4 ART lens: • Sony A7III + Sigma 85m...

I bought the A7II about three weeks ago and I really love it but I also felt some purchase anxiety because I was seeing folks saying how much better the A7III was and I was thinking about returning it and trying to come up with a extra 1K+. I’m glad you made this video so now I can let that anxiety go and continue to be happy with my A7II and further my craft. Thanks Julia!

Been using the A7 II for three years now. It’s a great camera and I think it’s all about how you edit. Both cameras are vastly superior compared to any other mirrored cameras on the market. The sensors are amazing and the speed of the shooting is amazing. If you’ve never used a Sony camera you will be blown away by both. The one thing I noticed mainly in this video is the ease of editing. I noticed she had a much easier time getting rid of distractions in the image and the light pollution. Plus the a7 III looked a lot more true to color which was pretty cool. But honestly if you’re saavy with using color channels in Lightroom this isn’t an issue. Definitely would love to field test an A7 III though

The best camera is what you are able to get/afford. She is right. If you are only able to afford an entry level DSLR like the rebel series than that's the best camera you have. You can do so much with that camera. Don't pay attention to all these upgrades you don't need. You can learn alot with the most basic camera. When you start outgrowing the entry level camera because you have so much experience, then you can worry about the next camera.

Literally the exact video I was looking for. And you confirmed my suspicions. While the A7 iii is an absolute beast and is 100% worth all the praise it gets, the A7 ii was so ahead of its time it still holds its ground to this day and is still an amazing camera (for the price). I'm actually a Fuji shooter myself and was looking up prices for the glass and gear I wanted to invest in, but when I did my calculations I found out it would literally be cheaper to buy a used a7ii and lenses of the same focal length I'd get on my Fuji, which just blew me away. Like right now you can buy an 85mm f1.8 that's literally $400 while Fuji's equivalent is around $1000. I would just save $600 right there, and Samyang lenses for Sony are so cheap it just blew me away.

Julia , one thing that has also improved in the mark 3 is the colour science- it is quite noticeable even in your examples. The Sony a7iii was a no brainer for me - I didn't even consider buying the a7ii when I bought my first full frame camera. I came from using an a6500 and the better ooc colour was immediately striking. Two years is a lifetime in camera body technology!

I've had the A7ii for the past two years and I'll be upgrading to the A7iii soon. I find the former was adequate for landscapes and wedding photography but when I decided to get into wildlife photography I realized the A7ii's shortcomings: only 5fps, no silent shutter, autofocus letting me down a lot. I also find the battery on the A7ii runs out far too quickly.

There are three not mentioned differences: 1) AF frame coverage 2) Compatibility with adopted lenses which is far better on A7III 3) Near FW upgrade of A7iii (r3, 9) which makes big step forward in AF usability even in video (I've upgraded from DSLR and the Eye AF is much better option than moving AF point around the screen [with Eye AF I can change composition anytime I want without losing continuous AF], next FW update also adds face/eye tracking thru leaves/grass not missing any shot...)

I recently got the A7 ii and I have to say it is a keeper. For casual photography the battery life is amazing. I took it last weekend for a casual photoshoot at a garden and I took pictures for about 1 1/2 hours without shutting it down. It was on all the time and I took around 200 pics. The final battery life was around 60%. The manual controls put you in a learning curve, but some of the dials are very useful even before reading too much manual if you put it in Auto or P modes. The offer with the 28-70 kit lens gets you a lot of value with the understanding that this camera is not for extreme zoom ins (unless you already have the zoom lenses or can afford them). But if you value photography this camera is very enjoyable and a steal for the price. If you study the specs and you need 4K or long battery you can go for the III if you can afford it. But you can be very happy with the II knowing that 4K is not very practical today for home videos and long battery life is more critical for professionals.

I have two a7II bodies and one a7III. For the money the a7II is a great camera and can get the job done most of the time. The a7III is a vastly superior camera however. Auto focus in video is much better in the a7III. With that said for those who do stills and video there is only one choice and that's the a7III. The battery life alone for videos is worth it. I agree with Julia on most points and that if you are on a budget or a casual shooter the a7II is fine but if you lean more towards pro and like to do video don't buy it. Get an a7III.

Hi Julia, my buddy has an A7II and I an A7III; i find the difference clear and remarkable, and so does he. The focus system, speed of shooting, battery life etc are important for us, as we photograph race cars on tracks and need the focus + frame rate + buffer. If the cost difference is worth it, that depends on available budgets and use as you explained. The dynamic range of the A7III allows it to use faster shutter-speeds, even in bad lighting.
@danieldougan269
@danieldougan269 5 жыл бұрын
Nothing against the a7 II, and I'm sure it's fine for some people, but the upgrades in the a7 III were considerable and especially impressive at that price point. With 10 fps stills, 4K video (plus 1080p up to 120 fps), and a new sensor with improved color science, it's a significant upgrade and even a possible a9 killer for about half the price. Yes, I know the a9 shoots at 20 fps, but that's just crazy...there's an upper limit to how useful a faster burst rate is and how many photos you want to come back and cull after you finish shooting. Then again, in most cases, I would prefer to use a crop sensor camera for sports and action due to the size and price advantages for telephoto lenses. Full-frame cameras are better suited for wider angles and low-light shooting. For portraits, you can still achieve shallow depth of field with Micro Four Thirds if you use a fast prime lens. It won't be AS shallow as full frame at the same aperture, but how shallow do you really need to get? Eyelashes in focus but the rest of the face out of focus?

The green tint in the A7ii is so obvious especially compared with A7iii. Speed, focus accuracy, colour science arre good arguments to save for an a7iii.
@superelectic45
@superelectic45 2 жыл бұрын
Other things to consider is the A7iii can suffer from problems with moire since it has no anti-alias filter. This can be annoying if shooting regular patterns like clothing texture (e.g wedding dresses). Also, the A7ii does have eye focus but only in single shot mode not continuous tracking focus. Above ISO 3200 the A7iii is certainly better but at lower ISO the A7ii is just as good, in fact in the tight head shot comparison I much preferred the A7ii output, I like the colour balance better. You can extend battery life by switching pre-AF off, picture review mode off and wifi off. $1000 dollars buys some nice glass! I enjoyed the review!

Good point, in some scenario, eye auto focus and quicker overall focus will do a good amount of difference in some tight moments where you just had to point and shoot That ease of mind where you know you'll get the eye in focus is something I personally would use in Photographing Human interest, etc. But in other scenario like landscape or timelapse it won't come as handy TL;DR : Human, A7III. Others or in Budget A7II, although A7I is pretty good, the prices different between Mark2 and Mark1 makes it no brainer imo

I'm considering getting this camera. Sold my Sony AX700 as it doesn't offer stabilization at 4k video. I have a Samsung S10+ and it has shoddy performance with night time and low light recording and stabilization doesn't work properly with low light video recording cause the tiny sensor struggles. And the pictures you look at distant objects which if you look closely, are out of focus. I also have a GoPro Hero 8 Black. So I'll look into this camera and I'll be happy with it for the next 10 years. Despite it will cost around NZ$2500-NZ$3100. Good review.

I was very tempted by the A7ii because it was on offer at the time and the money saved could have bought me a really nice lens. However I ultimately went for the A7iii because of the battery life, dual card slots and dynamic range. I made my way from Canon’s M50 to an A7 II, then shortly the 7 III and finally to the 7R III. I’d put it this way: 1) If you considerably care about video, too, go for one of the III models. 2) If you care mainly about photos, there is nothing (except for battery life) against the 7 II. Having used its two successors, I have to say, yes, they are indeed better and more comfortably to use. However, this is a process of adoption. The outcome of the images on the 7 II is something I still miss even though I get very nice shots out of my 7R III. There was something about it that just hit me in a very positive way. It’s not a perfect device, but it delivers good images and it forces you to learn to work around its limitations. That is very beneficial if you are more or less new to using a real camera instead of a phone. 3) I was very disappointed with the 7 III because its LCD had very reddish colours. It was impossible to say whether your outcome will be good or a disaster in terms of colours. The resolution of the screen was worse, too. However, 4K with full sensor readout was quite a difference over the moire-1080 of the 7 II. Very impressive video quality. 4) If you do landscape or anything with lots of small details, you will definitely value a 7R body. It don’t care about “who has got the most MP”, but in nature, if you want to zoom in afterwards to look at any detail in your image, you definitely see this additional resolution. It’s not necessarily better in every single shot depending on your subject/object/whatever, but there are shots where this matters and divides a good image from an excellent one. Buying guide: Video is very important >>> A7 III Video is not important, mainly photos >>> A7 II Video is important, but not as full sensor readout, images need more space for detail >>> any A7R

The autofocus differences get a lot bigger when you’re working in low light. The a7ii becomes pretty frustrating, while the a7iii remains pretty confident. Also, with the a7iii, you can just leave the camera in AF-C and it will perform great, while the a7ii can’t be trusted in AF-C with stationary objects/subjects. Have to switch between focus modes depending on what you’re doing. (I’ve shot about 20 weddings with the a7ii, rented the a7iii to try it at a wedding, but own an a9 now).

Wes Perry I’ve had some issues with the a7iii in really low light in AF-C. It just wouldn’t lock focus. I had to switch it to AF-S. however, with that being said I’m sure the a7iii is far superior than the a7ii and I would recommend saving the extra $1000 or so for it. It’s definitely worth it.

Being the sigma Art 50 and 85. Which has made it harder for a back up and extra body that I can still use my canon lenses. As it was going to be the canon 5D mk4 as I originally did so much on the 5D original when I bought it a month after release. So I blame you 😂. No really the A7 3 now having two slots has thrown me. As took many yrs to get my 1DX mk2 which I absolutely love and would not ever regret finally getting my dream canon yet canon or a huge change to Sony not as main but still flexible in of two bodies has been very good for number of different reasons and certain shoots. So i would love to see s shoot with some raw out of camera views. It’s a big thing as I’ve been with canon since film and still grab a roll just to get that old feeling of no previewing and the first look at those pictures for the first time lol. Just one of those things you do 😆. Any thing you would like to throw in as you’ve been using the. Canon and added the new kid on the block lol. That may help in this choice. Great video. Thank you Julia. The MkII seems to have a warmer color cast but it looks like any difference in sharpness would be at the pixel peep level. I can get the MkII with the 24-105 G for only a slightly higher price than the MkIII with the 24-70 kit lens. Almost a no-brainer after this video since I'm not overly-concerned with burst or eye autofocus. And honestly with Lightroom's enhance RAW feature, MP density isn't much of an issue any more either. I print super sharp landscapes from my old, old, OLD Canon EOS T6 (18MP APS-C with the EF-S 24mm f/2.8) at 36x24 inches and there is no problem with soft details.

I'll keep my Olympus OM-D E-M1 II and my Panasonic G85. Even if a full-frame camera is a great value like the a7 II is, the cost of good full-frame glass is always going to be higher than it is for crop sensor cameras like mine, and of course it will be bigger and heavier as well. Sure, there are times when I wish I had another stop or two of ISO latitude, but you might be surprised just how good crop-sensor cameras have become. The depth of field thing is no big deal: I can definitely achieve shallow depth of field and blow out the background with Micro Four Thirds with the right lenses. If you put a fast prime on a full-frame camera and shoot wide open, you might have trouble keeping your entire subject in focus. Full-frame cameras and lenses are really more specialized tools. Most people (including professional photographers) can be just fine with a crop camera...if not Micro Four Thirds, then at most APS-C.
@guardianobserver6593
@guardianobserver6593 4 жыл бұрын
Full frame are specialised items? You seem quite old so you must have used film reflex 35mm. It is a full frame and it was for the amatör photographer. The pro were using medium format. How all of a sudden modern photographers become so sensible not able carry around a full frame camera (when the old refle were made with lot of metal and also the lenses) I really don't understand. All this m43 and aps-c were made because at the start the cost of sensors was high. Not so much now. Anything bellow full frame will become (it is already started) grey zone, from the shadoiof modern smartphones. And offcourse you can take great photos with m43 or even compacts (already disappeared from the smartphones) but how much time can you dedicate to each photo and how often you find good light. Bottom line. Especially for amatours that want to catch the moment, a full frame with a good glass is the minimum if you don't want every time search 10 photos out of 150 fron your travels that you will not make again.

@@guardianobserver6593 I did have one film SLR (a Pentax ZX-50) shortly before digital came along. I got it as a gift for my 19th birthday in 1998. In the early days of digital, most cameras maxed out at ISO 400. I had access to a Nikon D1 in 2002, but I didn't own it. That camera maxed out at 1600, but it was not really usable at that setting...emergencies only. But it didn't take long for low-light performance in digital to surpass 35 film SLRs, even on cameras with crop sensors. Sure, you can do even better with full frame, but that's really niche. For my wildlife photography, I take advantage of the 2X crop factor on my telephoto lens, getting a 20 MP image that I can crop further. It would take an 80 MP full-frame camera to pull that off, and I am not aware of one of those existing. The Sony a7R IV has 61 MP, and I don't think any full-frame camera has a resolution higher than that. And the lens would have to be capable of resolving 80 MP. Yes, of course, you CAN get supertelephoto lenses for full frame, but they are huge, heavy, bulky, and expensive. And I don't want to hike around like that even if I did have the money.

I purchased my brand new Sony A7III about 2 months ago. About 2 weeks ago I started having a couple of focus problems with my 35mm Samyang lens. A7III kept giving me the "invalid lens" error, which made no sense because it is 100% compatible & I have shot weddings & events using the combo already with success. I figured it just needed to be cleaned, so I did that. But problem returned quite quickly. I looked at the lens mounting area on the camera near the sensor and noticed a small puncture in the metal. Figured that was it. So I sent the camera back to Amazon and ordered a new one. Just got my new one this morning and it works great, however, I notice the same metal punctures, (almost like little damaged areas) on the metal part of the index mount. MY QUESTION IS: Is this normal? Is this area supposed to look like this? I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just came over to Sony from that other company and I am not familiar with the builds yet. Please help.

Julia, if you are "advertising" Sony gear, make sure to point out in a separate video, how the bokeh looks completely distorted, when you use a 1.4 lens wide up at 1/8000 in electronic shutter mode (if you take the same image at 1/8000 with an electronic shutter, and then with a mechanical shutter, you will see what I mean). Sony land is not full of sunshine and rainbow, I just could not switch to Sony because of this issue. And the blackout every time I take a shot... And the bad quality low refresh rate EVF... And the small grip... So I decided to go with the EOS R, due to the much better usability features. I use the EVF, the grip and the shutter a "bit" more often, than the IBIS and the eye-AF and all the shiny features...

Some of your viewers may think that is just for you on a long event day. 😮 A deeper dive into the A72 vs. A73 would be okay. What might be better would be getting hooked up with Sony and doing a A72 vs. crop sensor A6400. They are both be the same price and would might be a good comparison for a beginner hybrid shooter. Haha that's not the whole stash either, however it is to make an important point. If you were covering an event in the 8+ hours mark running two bodies that use fw-50 batteries, you would want 16+ batteries to comfortably get through the day. Video wise you can imagine the pain of batteries that last less than an hour and getting through a 12 hour day with 3 or 4 bodies. Factor in usage and temperature and you can see why I own nearly 50 of those little s***s. =P We'll probably skip giving the A6400 a run as we're a little disappointed they stuck with the single slot & the fw battery. There should be a higher end crop series Sony body dropping eventually that will switch to the FZ battery and we'll be adding that to our kit immediately. Simply tired of using fw batteries haha. Love the compare and like always more than one way to look at it. I personally would now always advice the a7iii over the a7ii. Resale value, longer life cycle because of software upgrades (at least 2 big ones are coming) and better support/testing from external companies are but a few. Also once you get really deep into a compare there are about a 100 small changes that for 'basic' shooting you probably won't use until the day that one of them you need. The 'invest in glass' i would normally agree with but in this case i don't because of the resale value in 1 or 2 years of these 2 models will almost 'fill' the gap. If you really can't push your limit keep using what you are using now since 2 things happened / will happen soon. Many will jump from a a7iii to a a9 now its clear with its updates how amazing that camera is and will stay and once the a7s3 comes out (for video) many will drop the a7iii for that. This will mean that we will see many slightly used a7iii's hit the market... just my 2cents. Daniel.

Nice video. Look into the Fuji X T3 before choosing either of these. Lots more great features Sony doesn't have, especially in video and a great selection of superb OIS lenses.
