So happy you did this video. I shoot this combo all the time, and the 135gm has become one of my favorite lenses ever. Like you, I had to get used to being so far away, but that is a small price to pay for the quality of the photos I obtain. The sharpness, the autofocus, the bokeh, the colors...everything is perfect. I also use this combo with extension tubes for macro/closeup photos. While the R4 isn't my favorite low light camera, this lens pairs really well with the A7III and I often shoot this combo too. Thanks Julia for your great videos.

You ought to try the 100/2.8 GM STF OSS lens 😉
@hartmut-wilms4 жыл бұрын
I own both, the 135 and the 100 STF. Background separation on the STF is even better due to the integrated filter. The most pleasing bokeh, I‘ve ever seen. However, Julia is taking backlit photos most of the time. Therefore she is counting on high transmission. The STF has a t-stop of 5.6 (f-stop is 2.8), which might not work for her. If (low) is not a challenge, I agree with Scott to take a look at the 100 2.8 GM STF.

Julia, as always a very interesting and informative video. I like your interaction with all your subjects. I am wondering how this lens would compete with the relatively new 70-180mm f/2.8 Tamron. Obviously, you might have more versatility using the zoom but, I am specifically wondering how the f/2.8 aperture of the Tamron would stack up against the f/1.8 of the Sony outdoors. Of course you would get more BG blur at f/1.8 than at f/2.8 but, you just might be able to compensate for that by using a longer focal length on the Tamron. Indoors, IMO, the 70-180mm might very well we a better choice since the lens to subject distance of the 70mm through 134mm focal range would allow you to get a bit closer to your subject. Additionally, since the background is totally within my control when shooting indoors, I don't absolutely need the very wide aperture to blow out any BG distractions.
@hartmut-wilms4 жыл бұрын
Richard Crowe Hi Richard, I do not own the 70-180, but I had purchased the Tamron 28-75 and sold it some weeks later. I did not like the bokeh at all. It was irritating und not pleasing. It actually made me feel dizzy when looking at my pictures. The 135 1.8 GM on the other hand has a very smooth and creamy bokeh. Again, I do not know about the bokeh of the 70-180, but I recommend to base your choice not on quantity (of blur), but rather on the quality. However, bokeh cannot be measured and it is a matter of taste.
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
That's so interesting! I have a video on the Tammy 70-180 up on my channel with the same unedited cropped in examples if you wanted to see. Would be great to try out the 28-75 too as I've mostly heard some good things about it.
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
It's a little tricky for me to compare zoom vs prime.. if I was solely a portrait photographer I would probably go for the 70-180 as I like having that zoom versatility when it comes to portraits. Like I mentioned in the video since I'm so used to shooting portraits at 35mm and being close to my subject it felt very strange being SO far away on the 135 haha and I'm just stuck there the entire photoshoot since I can't zoom. That's also just a personal preference thing though as I know some photographers DO like being further away from their subject. However since I do wedding photography as well and it's my main reason to have a lens with reach like this I would go for the 135. At the moment with my Canon 135 f2 I already have to push my ISO a bit higher than I would like at some of the wedding venues I regularly shoot at, so 2.8 just wouldn't work unfortunately, but 1.8 would give me that extra bit of light which would be really handy! I'll see if I can find 2 good bokeh comparisons from each shoot I've done on both lenses to share on my Instagram story soon.

How you like 61 MP and how is shooting video in A7RIV? As you have it (A7RIV) and used Canon for so long you opinion would good to know.
@hartmut-wilms4 жыл бұрын
The A7Riv is a great camera. I know, that you should frame your shot right, when taking a photo, but sometimes a different perspective comes to mind, when you see the shot in post. In a landscape shot, you can crop to portrait and retain the resolution of 24 mega pixels, which is so cool. In addition Sony cameras have an APS-C Mode. Speaking of the 135mm 1.8 you will get a 200mm 1.8 equivalent in this mode. Yes, with a broader DOF, but the 1.8 transmission.

I have seen a few 135mm portraits and all honestly I prefer photos when the photographer is really far back to incorporate a lot of background like at 9:19 and onwards. I really like how the 135mm has the ability to make background objects really large which gives of a fairytale vibe while maintaining some background separation. I really wanted Julia to stand further back during her other shots.

Yeah I agree with you actually! Like I mentioned in the video I normally like taking portraits on a 35 so I'm really used to being super close to my subject, so on the 135 I felt like I was SO far away already with these tight crops and it didn't feel natural to get even further away for my shots if that makes sense?? I'm looking forward to doing another shoot in the future with this knowledge now :D

I like the 70-180 2.8 much more... What do you think ?
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
In terms of just being a portrait lens then yes I LOVED the Tamron 70-180 a lot. For me personally though I need a lens with reach for weddings and 1.8 wins over 2.8 :( I have the Canon 135 f2 at the moment and even with that I have to push my ISO a bit higher than I would like at some of the wedding venues I regularly shoot at, so 2.8 would cause my images to be way too noisy unfortunately.

How did you record your camera while taking photos!? I see a small recorder at the bottom of your camera!
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's just a little wifi recorder connected at the bottom :)
