10:00 this story reminds me of an hot springs spa/hotel (onsen) in Japan. It was family business...for over 800 years. And few years ago new owner outside of family took over. Guy who managed it bought it from old owner. Why? Because neither of his two kids wanted to take over. That establishment was visited by emperors, shoguns etc...and those kids just gave up on it to go to live in Tokyo. They abandoned 800 years of tradition for opportunity to do what? Be corporate drones or graphic designers or some nonsense like that. People told me "but it is selfish of parents to burden their children". To that I say it is selfish of parents to rob their own kids of chance to carry tradition on. If my father would have done such thing and I would find out that he basically robed me of something that grand that was to be my birthright I dont know would I be able to stomach it.

The discussion about heroes is interesting. Are you aware, Luke, that Ricardo Duchesne's thesis (his book, the name of which I forget!) deals with this issue? Ricardo, who did not begin writing the book as an ethnicist, realised through his research that the Western hero archetype differs from all others in not being the 'flashy, conquering warlord'.

But the hermit mortifying his flesh is not the same as the impoverished and starving. The hermit is casting off, depopulating his heart and soul, pulling the plug on the little I. Just leave him alone. We needn't and shouldn't concern state policy over him. All the above features of the hermit, .... none of them apply to the impoverished. They have needs. They have desires, ambitions even humble and elementary. They may well want a husband/wife and children etc etc, in short, they want "life".
