A little blip of the throttle with the clutch pedal down will help raise the input shaft side of things and allow it to match with the output shaft side, helping with gear meshing and causing the car to be more settled. It’s especially handy when it’s snowing or conditions are less than ideal.

Oil plays a huge part. I can easily go from 2nd to 1st now @ 10mph in an Aygo that was incredibly notchy to get into 1st when cold. When you get a new clutch, a lot of garages still stick EP90 into the box. 30 years ago no issue, but today’s boxes need much less viscous oil. As the synchros polish with use, the thicker oil makes it more difficult for the rings to gain adhesion. Swapping mine to Red Line MT-LV (their thinest SAE 70W/75W and much more effective than either low viscosity Toyota or Castrol oil), made a huge difference. Not the easiest to get hold of, but well worth the effort…

Thanks for sharing. I have a 2008 Aygo from the birth and I cannot remember the day when it switched well from 2nd to 1st. It goes better when It Is warm so the reasoning makes sense. Maybe I will try It in the future. Best.
@Spazzumiera3 жыл бұрын
So you suggest a "70W75" oil instead of a "75W80" ? Update: look what i found! For the most part these are SAE 75W-80 and 75W-85 oils, although the 75W-85 fits well in cars where SAE 80 were required. Too thin for most classic cars, but necessary for modern cars. The additive package uses magnesium or calcium sulfonate compounds and often synthetic base oil, and will give you better EP protection than a GL-4 sulfur/phosphorous oil. Many of these claim GL-4+ performance and pass most of the old GL-5 and SAE J2360 extreme pressure tests, but additionally pass manufacturers tests for synchronization. The problems of where to apply them lie with the auto manufacturers, where, for example, Toyota specifies in their owner’s manual, their SAE 75W without defining the rest of it. Oil sales people will sell you 75W-90, but what Toyota is really asking for is 75W-85 without sulfur/phosphorous. From the comments I receive, a standard SAE 75W-90 GL-4 does cause hard shifting and grinding in these Toyotas in 70ºF weather.

When I was taught to drive Back in the 80’s you were taught to change down when approaching a junction, traffic lights, give way Etc, but NEVER to drop down into 1st. Going on from the 80’s when I did my advanced driving, you were then taught not to change down, but instead to balance the clutch and brake using the brake and clutch more progressively. A new set of discs and pads is a damn site cheaper than a new clutch or gearbox
@infidelcastro51293 жыл бұрын
It’s perfectly acceptable to go into first whilst still moving, as long as you’re going no faster than walking pace. If you don’t go into first, you end up stopping unnecessarily at junctions and failing your test and/or holding up traffic for no good reason.

I can kind of agree with this comment, I have C1 and use it everyday, I think the second gear manages the low speeds very well.I don't know how is yours but in mine the first gear has the similar sound as the reverse gear,so I have the thought that it's first gear designed quite different than other cars. So I often use the first gear for the first movement.As a user ,I feel like using it this way is healthier for the gearbox.

@SidTheBudgie Жыл бұрын
Changing down from second to first gear either when approaching a junction (where the cars in front haven't actually make a complete stop, but it's too slow a speed to pull away in second - it's less than 10mph), or on a steep hill where a 20mph speed limit just doesn't allow me to keep going in second if I want to get to the top(!), is a bit hit and miss in my '09 Aygo. Sometimes it's a really smooth easy change (especially if I've been driving a bit and the engine is warmer - certainly the first gear change is pretty 'sticky'), but other times it just won't go in unless I double declutch, which is not something I've ever had to do on any of my previous cars. I did 'crunch' first gear from a standing start the other day, even though the clutch was pressed fully to the floor. Could this be down to the oil (given that it is less of a problem when the engine is warmer), or is it a sign that I'm going to need to fork out for replacement parts some point soon?

Not sure if synchromesh or not. 145,000 miles, car new to me, fault present when purchased Pug 107 1 litre 2006. Sometimes, more than often it wont engage first with engine running. Turn engine off and then engage first and then it slips in and out perfectly. All other gears fine. Lubbed up gearstick ball joint and drained the oil and refilled. A little better but not much. Could it be the control arm ? Sometimes when it wont engage first, I turn the engine off and then after a couple of attempts the gear selector will go in and out of 1st. This I can do all day long whilst engine off. As soon as I move off and then try and engage 1st again from stand still with engine running, more than often it refuses to engage 1st. No grinding noises. All gears smooth when its OK. No signs of metal debris in the drained gearbox oil. I am hoping its just the linkage ?? Thoughts please :(

You don’t have to come off the clutch during each selection that don’t go between the gears too quickly otherwise that will have the same effect of spalling too fast you need to change down according to the speed you are travelling it does sound like your second gear synchro might be worn but it is not a massive issue xx
