How inspiring. How many homes can one Biosystem unit power? As an architect, I would love to integrate this system into a larger self-sufficient, solar-powered community.

According to their own information about 100 American homes. Of course better-insulated homes like hemp Eco homes would need just one-third of that energy.

What feedstocks could be used if you didn't have a sawmill handy? How many people does it take to run? What parts of this technology are owned by the DOE or are proprietary? If a group wanted to build one, what would it actually cost to build?

@@simplyemily8251 Yeah... I was really excited when I wrote that and was ready ro secure the funding to build a private one. Then I realized this was a tax deductible stunt for harvesting carbon credits; not actually technology intended to improve the world. Sad.
@ronlabe5487
@ronlabe5487 3 жыл бұрын
@@dancingwithkerry3813 Yeah. It's a shame this was a stunt and they didn't actually intend to change anything at all; let alone the world with it. Primary key components are owned by the department of energy. All other exciting parts were patented by Michael. Fact is... all the parts of this are very low tech. Biodigesting can be done with 2 barrels. Algae forms in your pool if you don't try to kill it. Biochar needs a kiln that can be made again from two scrap tanks. You can do every part of this in your backyard under $1000. What they did was manage to take simple technology and arrange it into an incredibly complicated (though beautiful) system that cost millions of dollars. The problem though, is the only reason the green powerhouse was in any way viable was because they had an enormous supply of wood chips right there from a massive sawmill. Trying to ship in that much feedstock makes it fully infeasible. You can't just build this thing in your neighborhood and power 100 homes like they tried to infer.

I believe any organic inputs would work, even grass clippings. So in the summer you could possibly feed it tons of grass clippings that most municipalities are presently adding to the dump. I'm just learning about these now though so don't quote me.

Agreed. There is one animation in the Need to Grow documentary, but I watched it several times only to realize that they never do explain exactly what kind of energy it is that they are able to extract. The only one I saw was the methane gas from the algea production was used to fire the dragon that anaerobically heated the wood to 1,000 degrees, but how that goes on to power homes is not explained even there.

Although I can see your point and agree to some extent, there may be other factors at play with regards to adoption. A great example of this idea is the Tesla truck. The aesthetics were heinous, yet there was an extensive waiting list to get one long before the release.
