Executive Produced & Narrated by Rosario Dawson
A Film by Rob Herring & Ryan Wirick
With only 60 years of farmable soil left on Earth, "The Need To GROW" offers an intimate look into the hearts of activists and innovators in the food movement: an 8-year-old girl challenges the ethics of a beloved organization; a renegade farmer struggles to keep his land as he revolutionizes resource efficient agriculture; and an accomplished visionary inventor faces catastrophe in the midst of developing a game-changing technology.
"The Need to GROW" delivers alarming evidence on the importance of healthy soil - revealing not only the potential of localized food production working with nature, but our opportunity as individuals to help regenerate our planet’s dying soils and participate in the restoration of the Earth.

I watched this and it moved me...so emotional, but ultimately it left me uplifted and hopeful. I'm studying permaculture, and just started a masters in sustainable food, so I was already familiar with issues of soil health, but I had never really understood the potential for biochar until watching this. I'm sharing widely!

I just watched this film and it saddens me greatly that so few people have any idea about what is happening in real time to our earth and the future of food. I'm so grateful that there is a small army of concerned humans making a big difference out there.

Now the important question, how can we all replicate the dragon on a smaller scale so this knowledge gets out to the people. Because they might be able to burn one down but if there are is a movement of people doing it - it wouldn't be stopable.

They only glossed over a very important question. What will the dragon be fuelled by? They say wood that would otherwise be put into landfill. Well what wood is put into landfill? Is there enough of it to power the world? How will it be stopped from going into landfill and then transported to the dragon?

After an hour and a half and then looking at their website I still don't know how the Green Power House works or what it produces at all apart from electricity from making charcoal capturing the co2 and using that to grow algae which once 'digested' powers up the charcoal maker. What I don't get is how it can be called a closed system. surely, the algae need phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium. Where is that coming from? Too many questions for me to get excited about this.

In Western Europe and USA they are talking about permaculture and sustainable farming like something that would save the world. *(actually i agree) While in Eastern Europe there are a lot of oldschool farming *(actually always less and less) because without farming a lot of family wouldn't survive with Eastern European minimal wage, and they are struggling and they should end their farming culture because cheap import products which are produced by big western corporations flooding the market and buying their lands. I am not an expert in economics and agriculture I don't want to say big things that I'm not clear about but not everyone will become an organic farmer, and those who do will sell their organic products *(who can afford it) for the elite who suck off the labor of poor people and then pay them with minimal wages, which will only be enough for cheap chemical products.

This didn't happen in years gone by. Farmers used to graze a field one season and grow on the same soil the next season. The reason this was done is the livestock would provide nutrients for the soil on the season when its not grown on. I'm not religious, but even the Bible says that ls how you should farm. Somewhere in humanities wisdom they decided this wasn't needed anymore. Ironically if everyone was a vegan we would be absolutely screwed much earlier than 60 years.
@bifurioussiren
@bifurioussiren 4 жыл бұрын
Veganic farming exists and it thrives. (vegan and organic). We don't need manure or animals to graze just for good outcomes, and this movie shows that if you watch it (I have) and the large amounts of animal waste we have right now is poisoning local communities, becoming runoff and causing ocean acidification and dead zones and other issues. We also feed a lot of crops to livestock, and if we used that land for people instead we could feed a ton more people. sources below. vegnews.com/2018/8/meat-giant-smithfield-fined-473-million-for-poisoning-north-carolinians mission-blue.org/2015/02/whats-the-role-of-mass-animal-agriculture-in-ocean-degradation/ veganic farming: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoinq6GhmbqdmJI www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/08/save-planet-meat-dairy-livestock-food-free-range-steak www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/jun/02/un-report-meat-free-diet

@@bifurioussiren veganic farming is scientifically proven not to be abke to sustain the entire poptlulation by 2500% if everyone was to go Vegan. This is the issue. Standard fsrming from 200 years ago is absolutely the key. In fact the worlds soil woukd replenish if we went back to local farming with traditional methods. Rememebr the USA spent billions making a pen that works in space. The Russians just used a pencil for $1.99. The solution was already here. And has been for years. Society (and money from corporate) choose to ignore it.
@bifurioussiren
@bifurioussiren 4 жыл бұрын
@@selnor1983 Where's your source? If it's scientifically proven, where's the proof? Have you seen the documentary? We need to move forward not backward. Hydroponics, vertical farming, aeroponics, permaculture, food forests, etc. Harnessing things from the past is good too of course, but JUST going backwards isn't enough.
@selnor1983
@selnor1983 4 жыл бұрын
@@bifurioussiren manufacturing of farm foods is what's done all of this. Fsrming moved from graze and grow to consistsntly power growing to mass produce. What's ironic is 45% of all grown foods are discarded by supermarkets and farms due to quality control. The same with mass produced meats. Nearly 40% of all meat produced goes to waste. In the name of profit. Grazing animals is actually so beneficial for the earth's soil. Better than any thing man can do for it. All our problems with farming started when mass production happened. When we moved away from local produce and farms to mass pruduction companies for meat and produce. Profit is the number 1 thing. All else is secondary. The answers are and have been in front of us since we took these paths. But profit doesn't listen to common sense.
@bifurioussiren
@bifurioussiren 4 жыл бұрын
@@selnor1983 I agree, and I'm anti-capitalist. Growing food for profit creates issues. Mono cropping is a big problem too. Thats why we have other better methods like the ones I listed earlier. You can grow a fully plant-based diet locally. Moving to more locally grown foods is great and is what we should be doing, but grazing is not a necessity. This article has a bunch of other sources linked in it. I suggest you read this as well as watch the video I linked earlier on veganic farming which also cites a lot of scientific sources. acti-veg.com/veganism-is-not-sustainable/ The Need to Grow documentary shows us solutions and none of them have to do with grazing animals. It's about composting, buying locally, growing your own food or working with community or school gardens and they feature a new technology that can help us do a lot of good, a GPH. Again, you're saying a lot of things as if they're facts but you're not citing any sources.

Anything that could and should have been done to save the planet and future generations is far too little far too late. World depopulation of humans is vital for the planets outcome. It seems odd that educated people still insist on having more than one or two children. Not so long ago I thought the planet would have another 70 years but I'm thinking 30 years is more realistic

I take it that someone besides me discovered what with the great pyramid was truly for. I have all its history The story in Egypt is ridiculous none of these things are tombs. It was built by one of the sons of God you also built the Sphinx It is also spaceport and in shrines all the mathematics of the universe and it's located on dead center of the earth. Ningashzida is known by multiple different names. We all descended from Atlantis we don't know how old mankind really is but the true belief is it somewhere around 565,000 years old The flood was around 13,000 years ago and it did more than destroy earth we have been to Mars and the moon before and it is a waste of time to go again. The dust storms of Mars could not be tolerated 13,000 years ago. I'm working on a book probably going to be called the history of the world. There is no evolution that's all bullshit. Things evolve and adapt but they don't start up from nothing with an explosion like a piece of dynamite. Learn the truth because it may save your life. There is truly eternal life but we could be going through a separation process right now and people better damn well think about that
