The fan translation names were definitely in the style of old Ace Attorney: Some straight puns, some a bit more roundabout (compare “Patricia Roland” to the canon “Paht Rohl”), and some that were references to the Japanese names (Raymonds Japanese name also references a shield). These names are pure Spirit of Justice-style obvious name puns.

I don't think the new(official) names are bad, but just not what i expected them to be. I was expecting the names to at least be similar to the fan translated ones like the Great Ace Attorney was to its fan translation. Minus Lord Stronghart, though most of those characters names were similar to the fan translation. So its just shocking that the official names for these characters are so different compared to the fan translation, considering how good that translation was.(about as good as DGS fan translation)

Translation and localization is hard to do properly, and there are very few people who actually try to be creative and change something like names to be more recognizable for the target audience. I can imagine it wasn't an easy job for the fan translators, but neither was it for the Capcom translators. What would the fan translators think if Capcom made money with names that the fans created, while the fan translators don't see a penny? And by the way: No, I didn't play the AAI games

I am German, and there are many German-speaking fans who don't like that some of the English names were translated into German, i.e. _adapted to them as the target audience._ Many people just don't like changes in general, they see it as a matter of principle. As an aspiring translator myself, I can only hope to find at least someone who appreciates that kind of work.
