Based on the Novel by Gaston LeRoux, this song was a litmus test for 80's Metal bands. If you could play Phantom, then you were considered a genuine Metal band.

Before Iron Maiden became this juggernaut arena heavy metal band fronted by vocalist Bruce Dickinson, they were a promising British heavy metal band w/ a punk rock-style singer Paul Di'Anno... This was one of the earliest concerts filmed in late 1980 at the Rainbow Theater in London, England for the live concert video 'Live at the Rainbow'... just as Iron Maiden were finishing the tour for their 1980 debut album and getting ready to record and release their 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981... Paul Di'Anno left the band during the '81 tour (He was burnt out from touring and substance abuse) and former Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson replaced him for their 3rd major album 'The number of the beast' in 1982. 'Phantom of the Opera' was one of the early songs written by bassist Steve Harris, who liked to compose songs w/ time changes and complicated arrangements... When he formed Iron Maiden in London in 1975, he wanted the band to play the original songs which he was writing... However, the band went through quite a few members between 1975 and 1979 during their pub and club days when they didn't have a record out. Steve Harris was always looking for new talent to join Iron Maiden... He was introduced to Dave Murray (guitar - left side of the screen) who joined Maiden permanently by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) also joined in '77 w/ Doug Sampson (drums) and Iron Maiden spent years playing shows on weekends across the UK and built a sizable fanbase from their incendiary live shows in the clubs and bars. However, the band was unable to secure a 2nd guitarist for years as well w/ numerous players coming and going... It was during those years that Steve Harris wrote a bulk of the 1st two Iron Maiden records, songs like - 'Wrathchild' ... 'Prowler' ... 'Iron Maiden' ... 'Transylvania' ... 'Strange world' ... 'Innocent exile'... etc. Iron Maiden recorded their first demo at Space Ward studios in 1978 and were encouraged to put out an EP 'The Soundhouse tapes' in 1979 w/ 3 demo songs... They were signed to EMI Records in the UK in '79 just as drummer Doug Sampson left the band. The debut album by Iron Maiden was released in 1980, featuring Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (guitar) in the line-up... It charted at #4 in the UK and Maiden toured Europe actively before Dennis Stratton was fired by the Fall... Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced him (The guitarist on the right side of the screen) and recorded the 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981, which sold better... Iron Maiden toured Japan and N. America for the first time... Vocalist Paul Di'Anno was struggling to cope w/ the demands of touring and abused drugs and alcohol, which affected his voice... In the Fall of 1981, he parted ways w/ Iron Maiden.

Nice reaction, I really admire your open-mindedness. Please don't feel like you need to apologize for pausing. The whole point of watching a reaction video is to hear the thoughts of the reactor. There are plenty of non-reaction versions of this song for those that don't want interruptions. As a fan I'd like to say thank you for being so cool and so willing to experience things that might not necessarily be within your comfort zone Also, you are quite the talented individual yourself, people should be reacting to YOU

Great band, they were a damn good band with the original lead singer, Paul D'ianno, who you see here but exploded into super stardom when Bruce Dickinson joined them in 83. What was constant from the start was the brilliance of the band itself, 2 hard rocking, metallic albums with Paul with some cool songs (many great ones with Bruce). From the early era, try Ides of March/Wrath Child, the first title is the intro that seamlessly becomes Wrath Child. Tremendous opening tune for the Killers album. Steve Harris on Bass is the main man in this band, writes much of their stuff and is a huge influence on all heavy bands to come. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Never had the chance to see this version of the band live - I just missed them! I saw them on the first tour with Bruce Dickenson. I forgot how good Paul Di'Anno's vocals were live. The band was always tight. This video also features the original drummer Clive Burr; he is awesome. The band is driven by Steve Harris the bass player. He founded the band and drove the musical content. Compare this to what we see today. At the time it was mocked as "noise" by many, but man what talent!

I saw the tour their 1st 3 albums, and while the beast 7:50 tour was good I thought they lost the spark by replacing Paul and Clive, I also liked Stratton but Adrian was fine. They got very much bigger with the replacements, but McDonald's is the "biggest" burger chain and certainly not the best burger.

I love the old Iron Maiden, I like the new too but the old stuff just has that raw, youthful energy you just can't recreate later on. Certainly Bruce is the superior singer but Paul has that energy and style that fits the songs very well. Bruce has charisma, skill and passion, Paul has pure sex drugs and rock n' roll. Paul burned the candle at both ends and yeah, that means you're gonna burn out faster but man, for a while you're gonna burn bright!

If Paul wasn’t such a drug soaked madman I believe that Iron Maiden would liked to keep him more and would have done better or at least happier than with Bruce because the spooky vibe is edgier with Paul. Bruce is great if a little formulaic and over polished

Bruce is clearly the "better" singer, but I always liked Pauls vocals, as they where pretty unique and untypical for a metal singer. Though I have to say, I think his voice worked best in the softer songs like "Remember Tomorrow" or "Strange World", where he brought in a "dreamy" quality.
