Great reaction! I saw Maiden perform this song live at an outdoor venue in Phoenix, Arizona . . . in July . . . with the temperature 105 degrees F . . . and pyro going off every two minutes . . . and Bruce decked out in the red coat running up and down the stage and waving the big Union Jack . . . and somehow, he didn't pass out from heat exhaustion. Epic!

I never followed or listened to Iron Maiden, but before them there was Iron Butterfly, who had a hit in the 1968s with In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (derived from "In the Garden of Eden"). The original version was slightly over 17 minutes long and took up the entire second side of their album by the same title. It was one of the first examples of heavy metal, and influenced the genre.

As other have said the lyrics are based on the "The Charge of the Light Brigade" is a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson about the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. He wrote the original version on 2 December 1854, and it was published on 9 December 1854. The Charge of the Light Brigade was a military action undertaken by British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, resulting in many casualties to the cavalry. On 25 October 1854, the Light Brigade, mounted a frontal assault against a Russian artillery battery which was well prepared with excellent fields of defensive fire. The charge was the result of a misunderstood order to attack a different objective to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. The Light Brigade made its charge under withering direct fire and reached its target, scattering some of the gunners, but was forced to retreat immediately. Off approximately 600 men and horses 156 were Killed and missing 122 Wounded and 335 horses killed in action, or obliged afterwards to be destroyed from wounds leaving only 195 out of the 600 still operational the poem typical of us brits turned a bumbling disaster into a heroic action.
@ДмитрийСоциленков3 ай бұрын
The attack of the light brigade was incredibly stupidly organized, but superbly executed. Even the Russians noted this. British cavalry not only to break into the Russian battery, but some of the horsemen moved through it and suddenly appeared out of the smoke and were able to put to flight a much larger force of Russian Cossacks and Hussars. But at the same time, another part of the Cossacks counterattacked the battery positions, which allowed the Russian gunners to withdraw 2 guns from the position captured by the British cavalrymen. The British riveted the remaining 6 guns. The British also retreated in an organized manner. The Russian lieutenant Koribut-Kubitovich described the retreat of the light brigade as: "You can never better evaluate the cavalry, as when retreating after a successful attack, in view of the enemy. It is necessary to do justice to the British: they represented the height of perfection in this regard and trotted in order, as if they were training." To help the British retreat, French mounted chasseurs attacked Fedyukhin Heights, which forced the Russians to withdraw their guns from there, which weakened the fire on the British. But the heavy brigade did not take part in the rescue of the light brigade. An interesting case characterizing the mores of that time, there was a Russian hospital station near from the place of the British breakthrough. Russian doctor Generik, recalled how several British horsemen galloped up to him and asked for minor medical help. The doctor, of course, helped them, after which the British mounted their horses and rode off to their own.

@@ДмитрийСоциленков I don't think it was stupidly organized the orders were misinterpreted somewhere along the chain of command but to this day nobody is certain whose mistake it was considering the action was against the main Russian force was not the intended action The Light Brigade was the British light cavalry force. It rode unarmored light fast horses. The men were armed with lances and sabres. they were intended for reconnaissance and skirmishing. They were also ideal for cutting down infantry and artillery units as they tried to retreat they were under the command of Major General James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan Overall command of the British cavalry resided with Lieutenant General George Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan. Lucan received an order from the army commander Lord Raglan stating: "Lord Raglan wishes the cavalry to advance rapidly to the front, follow the enemy, and try to prevent the enemy carrying away the guns. Troop horse artillery may accompany. French cavalry is on your left. Immediate". Raglan wanted the light cavalry to prevent the Russians from successfully withdrawing the naval guns from the redoubts they had captured on the reverse side of the Causeway Heights, the hill forming the south side of the valley. This was an optimal task for the Light Brigade, as their superior speed would ensure the Russians would be forced to either quickly abandon the cumbersome guns or be cut down on masse while they tried to flee with them. Raglan could see what was happening from his high vantage point on the west side of the valley. However, the lie of the land around the cavalry position stopped Lucan from seeing the Russians' efforts to remove the guns from the redoubts. The written order which led to the Charge The order was drafted by Brigadier Richard Airey and carried by Captain Louis Nolan. Nolan carried the further oral instruction that the cavalry was to attack immediately. By Lucan's account, when he asked Nolan what guns were referred to Nolan indicated in a most disrespectful way (with a wide sweep of his arm) the mass of Russian guns at the end of the valley: "There, my lord, is your enemy; there are your guns His reasons for the misdirection are unknown because he was killed in the ensuing battle.

Caveat - please remember Maiden is an 80's band - in this vid they are well past their prime. I recommend delving into the past to better enjoy them. There is an older studio video version of this song that is outstanding. Bruce's 'belts' were way better in the past - his sustain and control were so impressive. The guitar playing was tighter as well. I was lucky to see them play live "back in the day". Also , FYI , [ just in case ] an "iron maiden" was a brutal method of execution in the Middle Ages - it was an iron cage fitted for a human body and had spikes pointing inwards - when the maiden's door was closed on the victim they were pierced by spikes all over their body - including the eyes. This cage would then be hung high as a warning to any would-be criminals - it's victim left to rot. The maiden struck dread fear into men's hearts - it's important to know what words mean.
