India can 100% make a film as intelligent as Inception. The question should be if the audience would go see the film and make it a hit or not. No one would've done that in 2010. Can't say even now. Instead, we would troll the film.

Infact, I would say what Indian Cinema lacks is film makers that can consistently make "good" mindless tentpole movies like RRR that can transcend cultural boundaries. There are many makers who can make rooted art movies in India. Malayalam Industry is full of them. But none of those movies can make a cultural impact as big as something like RRR.

If you can appreciate Malayalam movies, then it is truly indicative not only of your love for great story telling but also of your critical thinking. Malayalam movies have always been good and I remember them from the 60's, that's how old I am. Making movies on small budgets forces you to be creative and deliver great stories and acting. When you have a big budget, you can go for all the bells and whistles to cover up the lack of a good story or acting.

Actually Malayalam film industry was way ahead of other Indian movie industries in India always. For instance one movie that comes to mind is THAZHVARAM and another movie where mamooty played the protagonist. In the movie the story is, there is always someone in mamootys family who is mentally challenged and when the last person who was diagnosed dies the people in the neighborhood speculates who the next person is going to be and they all suspect it’s going to be mamooty who actually was as normal as they could be and was a teacher. However ppl starts to treat him like he is crazy and he starts to spend his life explaining that he is not crazy and eventually he indeed goes crazy. It’s an amazing subject and was a huge hit in the 80s . Numerous other movies from Malayalam industry was way ahead of its time.

When Rajeev Masand asked this question, he only meant Bollywood in general. At that time, not many were watching films from other regions of India and there were no OTT platforms. Since then, the Indian film industry has made rapid strides in terms of novel concepts and advanced storytelling. Bollywood too has taken strides but lags behind films from the South. As far as Inception goes, there are not many directors who can think like Nolan even in Hollywood. His imagination level is next level. 🙂

@@KrishanKumar-ec1ch And we will not reach Hollywood's level of execution until India's GDP can rival that of USA. Hollywood created a global market for itself over last 70 years. Their budgets are humungous. They have an advantage of English language being a global language. They have the freedom to pick up any wacky topic like inception and still find enough audience around the world that can make that movie profitable. Although my comment was deleted, don't know why but i would reiterate it for Indians who look down upon indian films and think hollywood is the gold standard. 1) john wick 4 is as mindless and plays loose and fast with physics as masala action films here. Don't see the "sophisticated but actually cinema ignorant" crowd screaming physics. Truth be told i had a more time with RRR compared to John Wick 4 2) Before making broad generalisations on Indian cinema; explore. There are various regions making really good films even there are some really good hindi language films. First explore more then make your generalised statements 3) There is a whole world out there other than hollywood that makes good cinema and has been making better cinema than just hollywood since the 1920s. For father psychological thriller films watch the German experessionist films from the silent era. The cabinet of dr caligari will remind you of inception btw caligari was made back in the 1920 whem psychological thriller wasn't even a thing. Its a german movie 4) Explore more asian cinema. 1940s-1960s japanese cinema made far more superior movies compared to hollywood but i doubt very few of you have watched most of those films by people like ozu, kurosawa, mizoguchi 5) south koreans make good thrillers. Iranians make great social dramas with a more realist approach, more real than italian neo realism. Check films from Afghanistan as well. The patience stone is one that come to mind right now. 6) european cinema (i am clubbing various countries of europe here smaller European countries not UK, France, Germany, etc) that make some really good experimental movies 7) France makes good romance movies. Very real and most french cinema would leave you with a bittersweet aftertaste. Also check films by godard from the 60s 8) For mass action entertainment check tamil and telugu films of recent times. I think lokesh kanagaraj from tamil cinema makes some really good action films 9) if you want more nuanced realistic movies India makes those as well, check them 10) Hollywood is as commercial as the Hindi film industry. Just that quite recently it has started being politically correct at a very superficial level. Just like there are dozen shit films from Bollywood same is the case with hollywood. But our Indian audience would lap any shit hollywood throws since we have colonial hangover. Whatever white people do is always better than us. Not that white people tell that to us but it's Indians themselves. Just explore before making broad statements as something being inferior. Every country has their own cinematic language and cinema style and most times they overlap as well but thats the beauty of cinema. Learn to appreciate the medium than just making broad genrralisations (this is more for the comment section and not for the two white dudes)

Exactly! Bollywood blames audiences but they themselves have forced these dumb movies on us. Indians watch alot of foreign movies dubbed in Hindi and we even watched Chinese movies about martial arts and stuff that’s how jackie chan and bruce lee became so famous in india. Also Thai movies like Ong bak and Japanese anime dubbed in hindi is also popular. Kids used to consume dragon ball z and pokemon growing up. But no, Amir khan would rather blame the Indians and call then dumb in so many words. I think he has stopped going on out in public to realise the ground reality also the interview is old af and thins have changed alot too since then.

He wasn't wrong (at the time, at least). However, I will counter your statement of bringing up films like Gangs of Wasseypur as a comparison to Inception in terms of writing. He wasn't about good writing. We've had that for decades. He was talking about that imagination. I don't watch Gangs and go, "How did he come up with that?" I do with Inception. Also, I agree that Malayalam films have that imagination that Inception has on a much smaller scale. Though i wouldn't bring LJP because his films aren't as accessible as Inception. As complex as Inception is, Nolan managed to make it so that even a common man can understand it. LJP's films aren't on everyone's wavelength. Even smart audiences usually are like, "I respect the film and its craft, but I didn't particularly enjoy it or like it as much as I respect and appreciate it." So he did have a point.

@@YuvrajHaldankar Movies like inception works in Hollywood because they have a gigantic global market. Even if they target very niche set of audience who are into these kinds of movies, they can still be profitable due to the sheer size of their market. That is not the case with Indian Cinema, there are many practical hurdles. I don't think it is because of lack of imagination.

@Harish RR I personally dont think there's a lack of imagination. But there is a lack of display of said imagination on that large scale. We see imagination in things like action, camera movements, or spectacle in big-budget films. But in the story and writing itself, it is fairly straightforward. The lower budget films are where inventive writing shines in India. A lot of Malayalam films aren't expensive. No Smoking was was not a big budget film. That's why they got away with complex writing. Because then they can earn 25% of what a blockbuster earns and still cover up their cost (yes, i know No Smoking was a flop, but he did probably cover up by selling TV rights)

So they use big actors on action, romance etc so people will just come just for big stars. They have to get out of that mindset. I remember Amitabh Bachchan posting he did not understood what was happening in one of MCU movie I think it was Avengers Infinity war and people reminded him watch all previous movies, what it showed that even our stars do not understand a concept of story telling in long series of movies. For them making part 2 or 3 is like borrow some character from first made something with one new song that is it. And also budget is not the issue if you have good story. So much money go les toward songs, dancers, etc etc. Money can be saved from these useless tricks and instead give it to the writers or VFX artists. Big Hollywood studios are investing in Bollywood. They can make big Budget movies in holly but can’t in Bollywood because they have not come cross a single script to that level. My point is our writers maybe want to write mind boggling script but can not because trend is different directors can not pull off something like Inception and Interstellar and with songs in them OMG movie will come out that will haunt years to come. To be very honest none of the bollywood actors/actresses ever considered South movies better thn bollywood n bollywood always adopted Hollywood n thy cannot think beyond tht.. whr as South movies were always proved thm wrong from the beginning the only thing is that thy did not get the platform bcoz of insecurity of bollywood.. I can give 100s of South movies which were made way before this interview which is beyond Aamir Khan's imagination... And you guys should stop listening to any bollywood celebs thy not even try to behave like normal humans ..so artificial everytime i see

Dear Rick and Korbin, Just like you, I disagree with Aamir Khan. He thinks too much at times. Agreed that India can never make a brilliant movie like "Inception". But at the same time Hollywood could never make a film like "Two" by Satyajit Ray(1964). kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHKmeH-gmZ59hLs The original of E.T by Steven Spielberg is picked up from one of Satyajit Rays old classics. I mean one cannot slot the brilliance of art into categories.

Yeah but Bollywood loves blaming the audiences so it’s not surprising to hear that from Amir Khan. Bollywood would rather make trashy romance flicks and mindless action movies or just remake southern movies and recycle old content and after all this they go ahead and blame the audiences. Look what they did with brahmastra, they had such a golden chance to get it right and the movie could’ve reached global audiences had it been good but Bollywood chose to make it into another trashy romance movie but with some good special effects and a backdrop of ancient Indian history.

DUDES-- Indian movie-goer expectation is FAMILY watch!! THE WHOLE family watching a movie!! Families are INTACT in India and lots of member in a family. There you go!! Its not about that Indi cannot produce these movies -- it is that nobody wants to watch a movie where EARTH is ending and you need to find other planets (Interstellar) :) :) :) Its a celebration of life, family, music and achievement culture and not serial killer stroy telling culture!! :) :) These folks especially Aamir khan keeps looking westward for appreciation and its just idiotic! Bachchan rejected the Anil Kapoor role as he as supposed to mislead the participant by a wrong answer : he said why would the host do that! Right wrong another matter -- but he would not break the sanctity of the chair taht Indians respecting since 1999 when this Who wants to be a millionaire started in India!
