Iroh says that the four elements in one person is what makes the Avatar so powerful. But he clearly doesn't mean because he can shoot fire and air blasts. It's the fact that the Avatar needs to be a more complete person. For example, to fire bend you need to be able to have passion and drive. And to be an earth bender, you need to have a strong will. Fire bending at it's worst can lead to anger (this was taboo in the past and is part of why the fire nation has such a strong concept of honor) and earth bending at it's worst can lead to stubbornness and stagnation. So the Avatar gains all the strengths of the different disciplines. The passion of Fire, the Will of Earth, the detachment of Air, and the community of Water.

23:23 Hey Alicia, glad you touched on that point as the creators of the show took a great deal of time, money and effort to portray the use of each element. The elements ARE based on real martial arts and each move was developed with the help of martial arts master Sifu Kisu. At a basic level, Airbending is based on Baguazhang and their culture on the Tibetan monks, Waterbending is based in Tai Chi Chuan and their culture on the Inuit Eskimos, Earthbending is based on Hung Gar Kuen and their culture on China and Firebending is based on Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and their culture mostly on Imperial Japan. As a sidenote, you'll see that Toph's specific style is quite different from other earthbenders as it is based on Southern Praying Mantis KF. AND If you watch how Azula/Zuko fight you'll notice that they are much more acrobatic than most firebenders' more rigid styles, which could be particular to the royal family.
@somecallmetim2112 Жыл бұрын
Damn, beat me to it. :) The animators were sent to take martial arts classes so as to better understand the motions involved in each one. This is one reason why the bending and combat scenes are animated so well. Sifu Kisu is also listed in the credits as a consultant.

@@somecallmetim2112 same, I was already searching out the name of the styles, but sometimes the amount of detail arround this series makes me crazy, like how the cardinal air temples are just loosely aligned with the four directions wich isn't only really in character for the air tribe but also there's the theory that they were built in relation to air bison's migratory patterns... The fact that one can have enough information to say something like that is just soo good.

@mrpeanutbutter6817 Жыл бұрын
@@Dan_Kanerva They didn't tho? That just shows how fighting styles evolve. That kind of martial arts as "fighting" styles were prominent centuries ago but became obsolete next to modern fighting disciplines such as boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu, taekwondo, etc., which are some of the styles that inspired how people in Korra's time use the elements, that's why their stances/forms are much more compact and efficient in movement compared to people in Aang's time. Basically, it's fair to say that an average bender of Korra's era would easily defeat an average bender of Aang's era. So it's fine to like the martial-artsy styles more than the modern styles, as they as more showy, but that doesn't mean there wasn't thought behind the changes or that it's worse.

Lightning is like pain and hurt. It suddenly comes in and breaks things. Iroh can take it because he’s wise and can always get back up despite his age. Zuko can’t because he’s too emotional to take it in. Lightning comes in from one, it’s then redirected and stored in a vast area where it can bounce around, lastly it’s shot out the other end. Iroh can “stomach” the fury of pure lightning but Zuko can’t because he take everything to heart.

Fire and Earth being in the same spectrum of say, "hard" kung-fu as it's also called. And Water and Air being similar to each other or, soft kung-fu. Which is why Aang gets Water bending so well. It's not too dissimilar to Air bending and the philosophy of his art and style.

Angry hopping Sokka is quite amusing, even if that impact should have left real damage IRL. Every element has their own archetypal style, though there are variation on these themes, unique flourishes, or even rejections of conventional technique like how Jeong Jeong used fire very defensively. However, for learning the basics first, it helps to understand the usual approach. Iroh wants to encourage. Maybe if he'd been there for Azula too during the years he's been there for Zuko, with Azula also away from the Fire nation and Ozai in particular, Iroh could have maybe helped her be well adjusted, but trying to reason with her now? That's a fool's errand. Usually Avatars have particular trouble with the element opposite their starting one. Airbending is hard if you start with earth, and fire is hard when you start with water. And vice versa. Though not always. That was Sokka's club, not his boomerang. Toph's suit technique is awesome. While Iroh can't fully know the science of it, the imbalance he's talking about IS how electricity works. Electrons flow from negatively charged places to positively charged ones to level out the charges. I'm sure not all Earthbenders are as hard core as Toph, but aside from her listening and waiting being something Aang needs, he doesn't have time to take it slow. The Fire Nation will be at its destructive zenith by the end of the summer. He has less than half a year to not just learn 3 of the four elements (he can't exactly master the final level of airbending from the monks' bones), but end a war in favor of the sides that have been pushed back for 100 years. There's a reason we remember Dante Bosco. He really sells us on Zuko's pain and insecurity. Could you see any other Fire nation character thus far offering insight into the other nations with such respect and an eye for learning? Iroh said that drawing from one source of wisdom can make people limited. And Aang draws predominately from the well of the Air Nomads. So that leaves him with limitations that some could argue as weaknesses. He doesn't retaliate or set hard boundaries and enforce them. Sokka's joints and bones in general are going to be SCREAMING from being stuck like that. Yeeah..... momma wouldn't like it if they took her cub. Also that would be another mouth to feed, and one that's carnivorous. This is how Iroh saved the ship in The Storm. Also how he shut down Azula's blast. And given his surprise over deflecting that massive bolt away from the ship, that may have been the first practical test. Or he never redirected THAT much. Iroh's son was old enough to see front line combat, and Iroh's hair went from black when we saw them playing, to already fully grey with the son's passing. So probably at least 20's by my guess. Sokkka didn't change, he just got joint pain for a week, hungry, dehydrated, and even upstaged. Zuko. Has. Issues.

@xavimontero26158 ай бұрын
This may have already been in the comments. But you actually hit the nail on the head. All the bending styles were a form of Chinese Wushu martial arts. A quick break down is Airbending is based on Baguazhang, a style that focuses on circular patterns to try and evade an opponent and get behind their back. Firebending is based on Southern Style Shaolin Kung Fu. A direct method that uses forms and circular blocks. Earth Bending is based on Hung Gar. A form that works with many strong stances and styles. In fact many styles are based on animal styles like horse stance which is a firm low stance and mantis which they focused Toph's techniques around. As for Waterbending, you hit the mark right on as it is based on Tai-Chi. It redirects the flow of energy and uses fluid motions to redirect force. All different martial arts but all joined as one under Wushu martial Arts. They had a real martial arts master of all four that performed motions for them to help animate. Unfortunately, they abandoned this in Korra and just started making up forms. ATLA really took a lot of pride and showed a lot of respect in the depiction of these forms. Another reason it was so good. :)

Fun fact about this episode the title has more than one meaning! As both Fire bending and Earth bending are badesing Kung Fu (specifically nothern shaolin and Hung-gar respectively). Kung Fu directly translates to Bitter Work, and this episode is all about earth and fire bending.

Loved your reaction my friend, and I can relate feeling sad for babies being an uncle to several beautiful nieces when I hear someone hurt them sadness and anger mix together within me and I won't lie I've had to use that side of me several times and the most recent one the last thing I remember seeing is the look of worry in my eldest one's eyes after I grabbed some punkass at a festival who was trying to take her stuffed animal away that she had won, I remember hoisting him off the ground and squeezing until I felt someone grab my left arm and when I looked down to see her eyes I threw the guy and he landed on his ass, then I hugged her tightly and said " I'm sorry sugar cube " before walking off with her and her stuffed animal in my arms. This is my code Harming me is one thing but harm those I love and I will unleash the sleeping demon within me and once I take you through Hell's Gate there will be no escape for you.

A morbid part of me wonders how this whole "baby" mindset would explode with Mushoku Tensei or hell, even Made in Abyss. Its a thought derived from that place in your brain that just cant help but watch that car crash.

@@g76agi I dont think there is a worse portrail of children suffering in any mainstream anime (There probably is, but I´d like to delude myself that there isnt). So yeah, like watching a car crash. Morbid curiosity.

I pretty much enjoyed this episode, but it points out the different characteristics and philosophy of each element fighting style... I learned this while practicing Ninjutsu in the past.... it's about how you approach and react to different situations and fights, and also how your own personality is tuned... It's a japanese philosophy called "Godai" If interested, look it up...

You're on-point about Waterbending, it's inspired by Tai-Chi.

This episode is one of my favourites. I'm very similar to Aang, I can't face problems face to face, I would also be an airbender by nature, dodging, looking for other solutions and it's very difficult for me to be aggressive, get into arguments, and basically do everything that needs from you fortitude and rigidity. It will be very difficult for me to learn this, but maybe one day ....

Now that we’re about halfway through & you’ve had this breakdown of the elements in this episode: Which one would you most want to bend / which one do you think you’d most likely bend? (Doesn’t have to be the same answer)

Lieu ten died in the war. (That's not a spoiler. They already said it in zuko alone.) So he would have been somewhere between 16 and 20 because that's the age you go to war.
