Aang grew up in peaceful times, while Katara and Sokka grew up during wartime, it shows in their attitude

It really hits hard when you think about Aang's perspective here. To him, just a couple of days ago he was with Gyatso and living happily. And then he comes back home to find his bones surrounded by dead fire nation soldiers. It's like he blinked and now everyone he knew and loved is dead, with their bodies displayed right in front of him.

I hope this gets explored further in the new live-action series, since they seem to be taking a darker and more open-ended direction with it being on Netflix and all that. We could only hope it lives up to the vision that the original show laid out for the Avatar world.

The reason Katara seems so mature is because after her mother was killed she had to start taking responsibility around the tribe and take care of Sokka, her childhood was taken from her

The one Monk Gyatso meant when he told Aang in the flashback that Aang was supposed to meet in the air temple sanctuary and guide him in his Avatar journey, was Avatar Roku, Aang's predecessor in the Avatar Cycle.

There's a pretty dark fan theory about the room we see Gyatso's remains in, that because he had no burn marks on his clothes, he most likely lured all those firebenders into that room so he could airbend all the air out of the room (and their lungs), sacrificing himself in the process, in order to give other monks and children a chance to escape. This theory also gains further validity from the new knowledge in a novel about the previous airbending avatar Yang Chen that there was a forbidden technique which could pull the air from someone's body. But it was considered to be against airbender philosophy

Aside from saying the name of a previous avatar (which doesn't count as a spoiler since that doesn't give any info about the plot of the show).

I am really enjoying that you address the psychology of the show. The characters are so well written that it's definitely worthwhile talking about how they must be feeling. I always appreciate when people catch things such as the pressure of sokka being the 'man' of the tribe and katara acting mature because she had to in a time of war

@@tyleetophbeifong8194 The show is within one full year. the end of the war was a year after aang came out of the iceberg. It's even said at the end of the show, "i cant believe a year ago i was still frozen in a block of ice" is the quote if you remember, I dont want to spoil the whole scene. Also they are in the middle of a war, not much time to celebrate birthdays. But it was confirmed they all aged a year by the end of the series, besides Toph.

It was never confirmed or denied but there was a theory that Mono was a reincarnation of Monk Gyatso, which is why he found him and led hi mot the monk's body

I don't remember exactly where or how true it is, but I remember reading somewhere about that theory being almost canon but was scrapped during writing.

IDK if you're a fan of Harry Potter but Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs who played Lucius Malfoy. Also, this episode shows that even though he’s banished, Zuko has more honor than anyone in the fire nation because Zhao attacked after yielding, a dishonorable thing. Zuko also in the last episode actually kept his word when he agreed to leave the Southern Water Tribe alone. And Momo mean peaches in japanese, so Mom is literally named Peaches, because he was eating a peach at the end of this episode. And Momo was initially going to be a reincarnated Gyatso but they eventually dropped that idea. As for ages, Aang is 12, Katara is 14, Sokka is 15, and Zuko is 16.

Aang is technically 112, but mentally and physically 12 Katara is 14 Sokka is 15 Zuko is 16 Iroh's age is unconfirmed but it can be assumed he's well in to his 60s. A lot of the characters have a lot, and I mean a LOT of back story that will be revealed as you go along with the show. When you reach the end, if you have any unanswered questions, there's obviously the follow up show in Korra, but there's also a series of comic books that are still being made to this day. Don't even glance at them until you finish the original series, though, just for spoiler reasons.

a good thing to take note of this whole series is cause aang is 12, he acts like a 12 year old. his emotions get the best of him really easily as would any kid, imagine just waking up one day and pretty much everyone you know is dead when you thought u were only out for a few minutes/hours

And here's a lore thing we can deduce from this episode. Remember there isn't any waterbender is Katara's tribe, except if some are with the men who left on the war ? It seems the reincarnation cycle goes that way : Air / Water / Earth / Fire. The Airbdenders are supposed to be extinct for a hundred years, people even believe the avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomad. So, the Fire Nation may have assume he died alonside the other airbenders, and it would have happened if Aang didn't froze himself. The natural thought would be that the next avatar will be a waterbender. That may be why they attacked the Water Tribe, like the ship we saw in episode 1. And they might have killed a bunch of those waterbenders, or captured them. Because, if they kill the new avatar, he will be reborn into the Earth Kingdom. And it seems this nation was able to hold on for a hundred years. Maybe that's why the Fire Nation is so determined to exterminate the EarthBenders, to get back the avatar as a Fire Bender. Because it doesn't seem to have happened since Roku, the avatar before Aang. That begs the question on how he died since Aang was alive before the war started. He may have been the one to initiate the war but was killed by some other bender, or maybe a non bender. That would have trigger the war as we know it. Now, the Fire Nation knows the Avatar is back but we don't have if they are aware of it being an Air Bender. But we can assume that since Zuko was found out, they would know eventually. This Zhao guy doesn't seem like the nice type. That's how you make your villain sympathic by the way, show someone even more annoying. By the way, look at Zuko's ship compare to the other : it's way smaller, who could be explained by his exile. And that could explain why he's so determined to catch Aang, he's convinced that would get his place back to his father. And the scar. Zuko dueled a master and payed the price. I wonder if that would become an ennemy of Zuko, or maybe the one who could teach Aang firebending. Maybe that person was against the war. I love that he has skills, he's trained and proved it. It's so refreshing for him not to be some bratty and arrogant kid !
