In the Avatar Comics, Aang consults Roku multiple times after making his promise to Zuko, that he would end Zuko if he showed any signs of becoming like his father
So when Zuko makes multiple decisions that threaten the peace of the four nations, Aang calls to Roku for advice, saying he didn’t even end Ozai, how could he possibly consider ending his friend
Roku insists that Aang must keep his promise and expresses his own regret for not ending Fire Lord Sozin even though they grew up as best friends
When war is on the verge of starting between the fire and earth nation, Aang goes to meditate and talks to Roku who once again advocates for Aang to fulfill his promise and even reveals that Zuko is his great grandson but as the Avatar one must hold the world above all else
After the conflict is peacefully resolved Aang talk to Roku one last time, thanking him for all he has taught him but claiming that this is a new kind of world and he cannot continue to rely on advice from those in the past
Aang says goodbye to Roku as he snaps off the totem with the fire nation sigil and burns it in his hand
This does permanent damage to Aang’s ability to connect spiritually with the past avatars but later on another former avatar finds a different way to contact Aang
The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

Roku was a blind fucking fool to have not seen it coming, meanwhile his grandson showed that from a young age he did NOT have the same world conquering desires, even as he grew into an adult he STILL never wanted to rule anything. He only ever took the position in the first place because he was the best possible option at the time. Sozin had confirmation bias, and a chip on his shoulder and it shows. even the other past lives who were all for killing were chill about it, but his crusty ass couldn't let things go. Well, part of the terms of the war ending was the fire nation would no longer annex earth kingdom territory, which meant they would abolish the colonies they had for generations. This was stupid for a number of reasons, most importantly, it would mean breaking apart entire families and communities who had woven together fire nation and earth kingdom cultures, families that had no lives if they were go to the Fire nation since that wasn’t their home. More infuriatingly, the Earth King and much of the government didn’t even know the war was a thing until the last month or so, and thus had no attachment whatsoever to the land they lost, it pretty much didn’t even exist as fire nation colonies for a hundred years. Everyone just assumed if the world went back to the way it was it would magically fix everything.

Roku simply agreed with Zuko and knew the consequences of renewing the fire natio's global conquest. By all known information, Zuko had gone bad and was seemingly about to reignite the war. Aang was putting his own personal morality above the good of the world. That is not a choice he gets to make because of his position as an avatar. @@aster1760So you agree that Zuko was just as capable of going mad tyrant as previous leaders and thus Roku's stance was valid. Taking away bending doesn't address or change anything. Zuko would still be the leader of the fire nation and would still be ordering the war restarted. It only worked with Ozai because Azula was also conveniently captured and they had the repentant and reformed Zuko to take over the nation. Without a "good" heir to take over the position all that Aang would do is remove Zuko's ability to bend but not his position or ability to command the armies of his nation. Replace Zuko with some other power hungry noble and the cycle continues. By ending Zuko it would show who ever takes over the consequences of their actions would be far more then just a mild inconvenience. When their neck is on the line people are far less likely to start stuff. This was already shown to work with Roku. As his threat to Sozin kept him in line for decades. It was only when Roku died and the threat was removed that he instigated the war. An imperfect solution to an impossible problem. But it is effective.
@dankerr9679
@dankerr9679 2 ай бұрын
Personally, I think the writers missed out on a good opportunity for how to write this for Roku, Aang, and even Zuko. From what I can recall, the Earth Kingdom is the one mobilizing for war, and the Fire Nation is just trying to defend themselves. Roku, a man who is still feeling the weight of his actions and seeing how the world has been impacted by it, would logically tell Aang to not repeat the same mistakes that he did. In this moment though, he could have finally made peace with what was done from his decision, and acknowledge that times are different. Understanding that Zuko isn't Sozin, and that if Aang keeps his promise, he would more than likely cause a war between both nations. Aang would be shown that he's still an amazing friend to Zuko, by not fulfilling the promise, and have a broader understanding of his responsibility as The Avatar. He doesn't want to turn his back on his friend, even though Zuko wants him to do what's necessary if it gets to that point. He wants to continue fulfilling his duty as The Avatar by restoring balance and keeping the peace, with as little bloodshed as possible. Roku could have explained that Zuko's death would be the incentive that the Earth King needs to justify war. A few years of peace after a century of war has left plenty of people angry and resentful. Hearing that the Fire lord is dead would qualify as good news to them. Hearing that he died at the hands of The Avatar would be a boon! Right away, propaganda would spread claiming that Aang agrees with them and that he's on their side, the right side. The Fire Nation would be in a state of mourning for a leader that actually cared for them, and vengeful enough to go to war, in his name, after the betrayal of one of his friends. Once Aang was been given this information, he could communicate to Zuko that he can't go through with the promise from the perspective of a dear friend and that he won't go through with it from the perspective of a leader of the people. Alleviate his fears of being like Ozai by reminding him of how much he has grown once out of his shadow. Ozai wanted to amass power, even if it was to the detriment of his own people. Zuko wants his people to prosper, even if it means he has to sacrifice himself. Him making that promise with Aang speaks volumes on how polar opposite he is from his father, and how he will continue to strive as the Fire lord his nation needs.

If anything Id say Roku's unwillingness to see any light in his own progeny only shows he's more like Sozin than he would like to admit. he's a hypocrite, and disrespected an Avatar who did more than Roku EVER did in his life, all at a fraction of his age. For an old ass man, Roku is HELLA immature.

This just shows Aang’s weakness he had for not being able to end a conflict for good. This situation didn’t even need a death or a halt to life but his un willingness to create true balance is what lead to Koras down fall in her life. The issues he left for Kora and the disrespect he had allowed to grow for the title of Avatar, is the greatest weakness Aang had in himself and the problems he made for his future self. He should have listened to Kyoshi and Yangchin on dealing with world leaders, yes they rule a nation but you are the Avatar and you out rule there selfish decision. That was why Roku gave him that advice because he failed to uphold balance, he knew deep within Sozan would never change and continue to ignore it. Aang forgot that the Avatars job is balance not one nation or a law enforcement job, Kyoshi made the Dai Le to up hold order and look what happened in the future. The avatar can’t just hope everyone will get along and play nice, it’s their job to make sure they all do no matter what path that may need to be taken.

all good, though. after talking with Yangchen in the next comic run, Aang realizes while the past avatars can’t guide him every step of the way, their wisdom is still very valuable, and this line of thinking is probably what allowed the gaang to create the united nations that we see in Legend of Korra.

The way I see it. Despite this causing damage to his ability to connect. I wouldn't say it's permanent. It's more, willingly temporary (or permanent, not sure which would work better, point is that he's choosing for this to be the case). As the totem, it seems like it's simply a way to focus his mind and ability one connecting to the spirit realm. Like how in DND, you might need some kinda staff or something to focus magic. This is more a symbolic way of him severing his connection and reliance on the advice of the past, in an effort to recognize that things change and he wants to change with it. (As was basically said in the short, more or less.) If he wanted to, he could fix the connection by using something else to attune to, to help him focus once again, but most likely won't to avoid relying on the advice again. This is me somewhat talking out of my ass, cause it's completely possible I've just missed something about the creators outright saying he's needed this... But that didn't ever seem to be the case during the shows where he's actually needed this specific thing. If anything, it seemed like it was always implied he needed something or somewhere that helped him have an intense connection to those of his past. But wasn't 100% needed.

Yeah he remade the thing later. It wasn't a permanent thing, he was just cutting off the link to make his own choices because he felt at the time the past lives where too marred with their own biases and predjices to be giving advice in the new age. and for the most part he was right they cannot understand the new age and most of their advice ends up being "Kill them"

Keeping a terrible promise is hardly honorable. Zuko vowed to find and capture the Avatar, and to deliver him to his father. Should he have kept that promise instead of breaking it? Aang promised to stop his friend if he became like his father, wouldn't the most prudent thing to be to prevent his freind from becoming like his father, rather than jumping on the murder wagon at the slightest hint?

I think in one sense, it makes too much sense that Roku's wisdom is actually harder to use. Think about it, normally, the previous Avatar wouldn't have to be so many years in the future when they give advice. They usually give advice closer to when they actually died. But because Aang was frozen, he basically skipped almost a whole generation. And not a normal generation but one that dealt with tons of change in the Avatar's absence....

Just another fantastic aspect about ATLA; it shows mentors as flawed people who offer valuable advice but are also just human. Iroh used to be a fire nation general, Roku made the wrong call here, and all avatars told Aang that killing Ozai was the only way. It really teaches kids that while advice from elders should always be respected and considered, you might someday need to find your own way to solve something instead of blindly following orders.

Did you know Holocaust denial is illegal in some countries? What is that if not remembering the past? Obviously in these comics things work out cuz the writer says so but in life it’s different. It’s part of why we have so many issues now. Too busy looking forward that we forgot what came before
@dishantithomas4198
@dishantithomas4198 2 ай бұрын
@@JohnnyGage316 let's look at the actual context Roku is telling aang to kill zuko because he regrets not killing sozin . He doesn't take into account that their circumstances are different. Sozin never even attempted to hide his contempt for Roku He was always outwardly aggressive towards him into the world. Zuko has been the opposite essentially since his birth. So to give him advice for essentially the wrong person because He didn't do his job correctly, is just poor advice. Even if you have the wisdom and experience, you need to adjust your advice to the situation you're giving it to. Any Roku is acting as if every situation is exactly the same and it just isn't. As for your other point, obviously you want to look at the past so you don't repeat it. However, if you continue to only focus on the past, you will not progress towards the future. Hell there are multiple arcs dedicated to not relying too heavily on your predecessors informing your own path
@JohnnyGage316
@JohnnyGage316 2 ай бұрын
I do agree that looking backwards makes it hard to see the future or can cause to you to make a mistake because you used advice that isn’t applicable. But there is a balance. Never throw advice away. Take it and apply it as possible. What I’m more annoyed with is the advice the writers are giving. And the number of people who seem to eat it up. You see it a lot in storytelling, especially modern stuff. The idea of the past doesn’t matter and elders have no idea what they are saying. And as others pointed out, the writers don’t seem to understand the characters. Aang has always forged his own path but he’s always had respect for the past. Here he literally throws it away, in an effort to say I know better. It’s out of character. He’s disregarded advice but never just simply tossed it aside. Plus, it seems out of character for Roku to be some single minded himself. It’s a bad story.
