Kaushiki Chakraborty’s rendition raga Bageshree of a lively exploration Indian classical genre. It is one of the famous ragas of Indian classical music. A doyen of the Patiala gharana, Chakrabarty’s lilting voice and ease of improvisation make it a wonderful listening experience. The Bageshree raga was performed by Kaushiki Chakraborty at the Bengal Classical Music Festival in Dhaka, in 2014. On stage she is ably accompanied by the harmonium Gourab Chatterjee and the acclaimed tabla virtuoso Pt Yogesh Samsi.
Kaushiki Chakraborty’s astonishing khayal vocal technique is the result of years of intense training. She spent much of her childhood living at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, one of India’s premiere music institutions, while her father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty worked there as a khayal scholar. She known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate melodic ornamentation, and has become one of the first female singers from this tradition to receive international recognition. Today she focuses on Hindustani classical music, but has also sung in films and recorded popular songs.

Her hold on drut laykari and taankari is unmatchable . Though this is an old recording, her gayaki is even more nuanced and balanced now imo ,But the way she understands rythm , the very first taan she did , same progression but 3 diff The uniqueness in her drut. .some elements of patiala shining. Yes some elements even dont sound that great to me as well , and maybe takes away the essence at times but thats how it is when you try to express wholeheartedly with all honesty but i am no one to criticise any esteemed artist. They know what they are doing and how to sing .All said and done ,No ones creates tapestry with sargam taan like her except pt Ajoy Chakrabarty ji . Pranam❤

having greater knowledge does not mean one is more scholar like if you put milk in a copper pot it can not remain in normal condition. Experience is the best factor in anything which can be assessed and age gives experience. So try to respect elder people. You knowledge is zero against experience. I learnt music from renowned guru and i know music well. It is 100% true that while singing it should not seem that it’s like two women making quarrel but it should be soothing, healing, expressing peace. Whatever sang here is over exploitation of kasur patiyala gharana characteristics. Characteristics can be part of image but you can not make characteristic a image. Soul full, touching singing is always best than have wrestling with soor. You can not understand this as you are a young age, not experienced person. Sea is peaceful and stream always make noise your arguments are same like this. You listen singing of Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki. Pt. Mallikarjun Mansoor, Pt. Firoj Dastur, you come to know what is classical singing. Each time throwing body exhausting taan is ofcourse not music. And each time matching toppest taar saptak soor is not worth singing. It is nothing but hoarse, surly.

Why are you making individual comments ? N copy pasting here? I mean what's the purpose? You had already replied to me there. And when did i ever disrespect you? Or in your dictionary, the definition of disrespect is " speaking rationally and in an objective manner without talking too much about subjective opinion" . Also If you are so secure about your knowledge, and experience then you could have just ignored and moved on. Idk music you learnt and how much is your knowledge ( your videos does not reflect much of it sadly) but , i think you skipped the lesson understanding n following nature of musical composition ( hence u think this particular composition can be sung meekly without the murkis ) , also the basic nature of icm thats its diverse and expressions depend the artist ,and EVERYTHING IS ACCEPTABLE AS LONG AS THE STRUCTURE OF THE RAGA IS MAINTAINED , but seems like you are a fed an idea that music can only be soothing n sweet and the definition of soulful music equals to peaceful music 😂 . Anyways, its too late for you understand a new pov , with age neuro plasticity goes for a toss. N its not my job to school you either. Also based on the names u took , seems like your playlist n understanding of classical music is limited to Jaipur atrauli - kirana gharana style n philosophy n musicians who existed half a decade ago , hence you lack the mindset to respect and accept something different , young and newwr than that n do not have the insight to understand the changing nature of music , the influence of performer's age , the timeline n diverse expressions for gods sake!! Not your fault , most people are like you only floating in the surface and thinking they are diving deep. In my previous comment didn't disrespect you for once .I just disagreed to ur stance n I countered them logically. Seems like an younger person, giving you a peace of mind , triggered ur fragile ego uncle ji . I stand by what I said about respect as well as this piece of music . Also if you think this is over exploitation of kasur patiala characteristics , then i will say you have NOT heard kasur patiala enough., This rendition is not near What bade ghulam ali khan sahb has sung in terms of ornamentation, complexities , dynamicness and unpredictability ,. Go hear his bageshri to understand how soulful and beautiful icm can be while "wrestling with surr" or being playful and powerful. This is extremely dynamic and beautiful as well. Btw have you even heard this clip full , she did other stuff other than singing taans n murkis. So not that characteristics is not the entire image here. There are multiple places , she has sung alaaps , improvised the lines of the bandish and sung it softly. It's quite dynamic in that way. Guess all somehow bypassed ur ear. But if u want timestamps with appropriate technical terms i can give that. Last but not the least , you are right music is not all about taans , running across as saptaks , absolutely agreed but let me tell u this , music is also not all about singing same progressions within the middle octave , doing short basic sapat taans ( only akar) , hitting every swara straight slowly and doing flat laykari and monotonous alaaps without dynamics. Music is wayyyyy broader than what u think it is. And respect is a thing that goes eitherways. If you think , age is the main factor in it n experience can only come with age , you have an archaic , prejudiced and narrow mindset. I respect people based on their traits and what they have earned not cz they r older than me . N this action of yours to make an individual comment to prove ur point n gloat about experience just made me loose all respect for u , not that you care but the fact that only countering ur points rationally got u so riled up is funny to watch nonetheless 😂😂.

Here the entire piece especially last 10 mins . Try to understand the elements he and MAK has incorporated , the extensive laykari , taankari , different tihai n let me know where exactly you find peace in so much ornamentation.

Doubtful about ur understanding of music. Singing a bandish is not classical music either with few conventional akaar taans either. Drut singing is supposed to be filled with excellent layakari and the dramatised version of the raag. If ur excepting unimaginative unidimensional presentations you wouldn't get that from an artist like her , who explores the ragaa n shows her ability to imagine n reproduce them technically . Go listen to people who sings like what ur expecting . Acting as if uk music more than the renowned artists.

Umm how are u coming to that conclusion? Or you are rationalising? Long comment , do read , My guru has always told me to think differently, go beyond daal chawal ,try different things , work on my hold on surr ,taal and never stop doing riyaz and learning. As a student of music who is well acquainted with patiala gharana ,I can say This gharana symbolises ornamented drut presentations , layakari , usage of gamak , open akaars , elaborate boltaan , bolbat etc which is always visible in kaushikiji's music ( I came here to listen and learn found your comment to my misfortune) Also even in vilambit the chalan is very distinct and different than favorite gharanas of "purists who think they only represent classical music" like jaipur ,kirana etc. ( mind you my sarcasm was meant for those people who screams arrogance, not the gharanas nor the esteemed musicians who represent them) any kind music is not beyond amalgamation of swaras . Icm is a form of art which depends on the interpretation and thought process of artists .If i would not have been a student , i would have commented like this. If you want to discuss more about classical music and music theory, we can . But i dont have time for that cz u dont even know how to be respectful or intellectually articulate. So this shall be my last comment to u. A casual listener ( no problem in that) with a inflated ego would comment the way u did n not bring technical aspects while establishing a point like I did ,you also know that hence ur attacking. You are a either a student of music whose mind is still closed up and you dont understand this is a creative field and diff gharanas ,artists perform differently or a rasika who does not understand understand complex technical elements and hence the aversion. The definition of soul music and bhava or whatever u guys say is subjective . Listen more ,learn more and then come and comment. Your original comment itself sounds very daft. Go and do riyaz if you have a guru. I m sure he will appreciate that very much than doing these kind of things some of you say reflects more you poorly you think of this artform and artists rather than anything else @@vedanti408. Remember this , A true student of music would atleast appreciate the differences , the skills ,technique , the artists personal freedom to emote the way they want to and wont be disrespectful while putting across a diverse opinion. Audacity is bane and humbleness is a boon remember that. Take care.

@@serendipity1044 I didn't even mention gharanas lol. Anyways people are aware about my comment and they are responding the same in comments. Kaushiki ji is a respected artist . You started the personal attack, then mentioned gharanas, then you mentioned egos and ignorances. Well I really don't care about your opinion because there are thousands of fans like you you like this kind of act. But the comments under the video proves there are good listener who really understand the Raga music rather than merukhand , sapat , alankara taans and laykari music .I am a sitarist, laykaris and taans are deep rooted in instrumental music than singing , the way I have been taught is through great masters like Pt Kumar gandharva, Vi. Kishori amonkar, Pt mallikarjun mansur, Pt Jitendra Abhisheki, Us. Abdul karim khan, Us bade gulam Ali Khan, Pt ravi Shankar, Pt nikhil banerjee.etc their music is Raga oriented. They use taans to produced a raag and not vice-versa.

@@vedanti408 firstly the percentage of people agreeing to u "who u call good listeners" is 10% of the total comments in this video. Anyways , its not a competition. I have few questions for you , what makes you think the way only you or some people like you perceive classical music is the only approach? And what is raga oriented music? The elements u mentioned are very much part of the ragaa. As long as the grammar of the raga is maintained, it is raga oriented. Its not like all these didnt exist before n she invented it itself 😅 .And why do u people who do not agree have less understanding than you do? This particular idea you are speaking is it your own realisation or something fed to you ? Also I saw you mentioned bgak . He is my hero❤. If you would have heard him enough ( not just few recordings of his later years ) , you would be very much aware that his gayaki was extremely ornamental and deep seated in layakari ,especially in drut. Kaushiki ji though ,is a complete artist on her own stead and is pretty young and long way to go ,many of the elements she puts in her music is her music is completely inspired by khansahb's gayaki and she is the current torch bearer of this gharana. That's why I brought up gharana cz I felt you are questioning the thought process of entire the gharana. And a gharana's style can only be well explained based on the technical elements . The feel element ,the essence of raga is extremely subjective because of its ambiguous nature. You didnt find the raga here cz probably you couldn't connect ( thats okay) but many of us did and that counts. There is no one singular or "correct" way of singing or playing a raag , everything is acceptable if the structure is maintained. Also ICM is ever evolving with time , artists like her, niladri kumar rn have millions have fans including other maestros cause somewhere they are doing justice to the art form ,bringing something to the table and most importantly expressing themselves whole heartedly instead of blantantly copying past legends. From objective point of view an art is nothing but it's technical elements, and yes some us when hearing a musical piece focus we pay attention to its elements , the application and each and every surr cz we are students as well and that's a virtue . It's important to become a sensible kansen first and for that one needs a humble and non judgemental approach . Just focusing on a purist philosophy, and the subjective elements of the artform ,does not definitely make on a good listener . Idk what u found wrong in this clip, but i could see a diff rather youthful bageshri explored through unique layakari and presentation . Bageshri is a Poweful raag which has both a sombre side and playful side . I could definitely feel that here. And tbh one truly cannot get essence of any ragaa if they do not fully understand the technicalities used in it ,the thought process behind it. And yes ,she is a respected artist ( thankyou for not forgetting that ) n she has many fans like me who act like this cz we connect ,we could feel , we could understand the thoughtprocess , not everyone can ,and coming to criticisms like these ,ain't going to affect her anyways , she has way more better understanding of the artform and it's legacy more than any of us . Otherwise she would not be renowned revered or loved. Also you mentioned kumar gandharv ,ravi shankar they still have critics and in their prime there was a plethora of them who questioned their entire approach towards icm , because of their unique approach towards icm , people used or still uses similar phrases like you used to describe their music . Didn't stop them from being who they are. So critics or naysays will be present , its normal but they are insignificant to the artists or the artform. True critics will give constructive criticism ,won't disregard taiyarri , technical elements said about ego n everything cz your comment screamed disrespect to me. Even if you don't agree or connect there is way to put it across. Being humble and respectful is one of many things my talim has taught me. As much as your opinion and people agreeing to it is valid ,so are of those people disagreeing and enjoying and finding the raga in this rendition. A person who truly understands music not only icm that it's a self expression , and in creative field ragas or any composition one is presenting 50% depends on the artist's approach towards it. That's why so many diverse genres ,styles exist. A good listener will try to align their thoughts with the musician, try to understand their expression, not disregard the technique and be absolutely crass while talking about an artist who is way above their league. Like some people behaving in the comment section. Just because people don't agree with does not make them a bad listener. I can say that about u too then cz i could connect to the bageshree here n u didnt. It's good to know ur a sitarist, I am a student of icm too . All the best for ur musical journey.😮
