He is the exact reason we had so many boxing clubs in the poorer parts of town in the late 70's and early 80's. I spent a lot of time in a few of them, he was a great guy and boxer.

Don't focus all your attention on Pryor's fists.......or youll miss all that beautiful body movement and footwork. Wouldn't say it was underrated but often over looked

I worked for Aaron Pryor bringing Sparring for The Fights with Alexis Arguello ... I was in the Dressing Room after the Fight in Miami @ the Orange Bowl .. Was there when Pryor's Goons picked up and threw the Miami Boxing Commisioners out the Room, as they came for the post fight Drug Test ! Seen stuff I never seen before or after in that dressing room and I been around Boxing for more than 50 years ... Pryor was the friendliest guy in Boxing and a complete monster in the Ring... I lived close enough to Aaron's Miami house that I could hear the gun shots from my front porch... Aaron was captured by a gang of goons/criminals who cash him in for their Drugs... They got him hooked on CRACK the only opponent to really ever beat Pryor ! Yes he lost to Bobby Joe Young BUT, I was with him at the 5th street gym on Miami Beach as he was preparing for this bout ... Pryor was in fabulous shape being trained at that time by Bo Jack the Hall of Fame Great Champ who's Style was a lot like Aaron's.. 3 weeks before Fight Night The Goons showed up and took Pryor away to the Bahamas and when he came back for the fight he was he was drained and toasted... The Crack defeated Aaron Pryor but Bobby Joe Young got the WIN ! True Paulie D' The Punch Professor

Still how does Pryor go down against Young from a Shoulder, LOL< watch the fight, he bumps into him with his shoulder and not that hard and Pryor goes down, had to be a payoff.
@PunchProfessor
@PunchProfessor 7 жыл бұрын
Rspene smit~ Pryor didn't go down from a Bump by Jones,it was drugs that knocked him down...~ He was smoking CRACK in the Bahamas, everyday for the last 2 weeks before the fight! The drugs and his own crew (THUGS), K.O.'ed The Great Champ .... They took Pryor out to party every chance they could because Aaron was very free with his money ... True Paulie D'
@Rspenesmit
@Rspenesmit 7 жыл бұрын
I fully agree about his drugs and other things, but still he was going along in this fight, and that shoulder hit him and he goes down, even after taking punches, even with the severe drug use, he took punches, then takes a shoulder and acts as if it staggered him, just odd, even with drug use,
@PunchProfessor
@PunchProfessor 7 жыл бұрын
Rspene smit ~ I haven't seen the fight in years but I was there and there in his training at Dundee's 5Th Street Gym... Pryor wasn't planning on losing the fight with Young and he gave all he had .... Only he DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO GIVE ! Aaron was in great shape up till a couple /3 weeks before the fight... Pryor was being trained by The Great Champion BO JACK WALKER ! Then one day the goons showed and moved camp to the Bahamas ... where the word is that it was a full blown party ! What you seen was Aaron quit before he got killed ! Perhaps the goons bet on Jones but Pryor didn't come to lose * * * * * True Paul D'

Aaron Pryor was a f'king BEAST in the ring. Anyone who could walk through the most text-book right cross from Alexis Arguello, smile, and then kick his ass, is super human. Maybe the finest 140 lb fighter ever. Thank you for all of the GREAT fights, and Rest in Peace, Hawk, Rest in Peace.

A true champion. Aaron Pryor came to the fight to fight. No bullshitting. He came to whip your ass. And he fought clean. No cheap shots. That "black bottle" thing was suspect but I think the second fight with Arguello cleared up any doubt about who was the best. Sugar Ray I enjoyed. Marvin Hagler I respected. Aaron Pryor I revered. I'm glad I got to see him in his fighting days.

Yeah that would be an amazing and intensely explosive and brutal and high-volume war for the ages. Shawn Porter is no joke, one of the most underrated fighters of the modern era. His losses are only to truly elite world champions, usually narrow split decisions or closely competitive at that. He actually fought like a truly great welterweight, maybe even a potential ATG, in his recent career-peak performance against arguably the greatest modern welterweight and possibly best p4p boxer-puncher of this era... Errol Spence Jr. If Porter can maintain that unrelenting style at that level of performance for a while longer, fighting more frequently as well, he could amass a great legacy. A style like Porter is more favorable to past ages of boxing where the boxers fought with insane frequency - the logic is that it’s one thing to fight a perfect fight once and manage to outbox Porter once just enough to edge out a tough, closely competitive win. It’s quite another thing to do that repeatedly in one or more subsequent rematches. Porter could literally beat anybody at or around welterweight at least once on his best night, given enough chances to wear a guy down and adapt to his style enough to impose his hyper-aggressive gameplan to ultimate fruition. Activity and experience benefit a guy like Porter I suspect. Like a machine that runs more efficiently if it’s relatively warmed up, frequently fine-tuned, and in a pattern of regular activity, as opposed to rusty and idle. Since he relies on going 100% turbo mode hard as possible, winning with sheer physicality and pace and volume and pressure, that’s especially important. This is true of Pryor as well. The ultimate, supreme example of this historically was surely Hank Armstrong.

Where do you get the idea Leonard avoided him, he offered Pryor $500,000 he turned it down, they upped it to $750,000 he turned it down and Leonard moved on, Duran offered $750,000 as he moved up to WW, they never even bothered to give them an answer and the offer expired and Duran moved on up to WW to fight Leonard, no one avoided this guy, he avoided them, Saoul mamby was ranked #1 through much of Pryor's reign, yet somehow, they magically never fought, look his record over, he fought like 38 bums, Arguello was over his best weight and and getting closer to the end, Cervantes was at the end, he fought no one.

Not at all, he had no defense, no 1 Punch KO power, no balance, Zero Ring Generalship, his corner cheated and was terrible, he was short, he was wide open to be hit, any great fighter that was legit at that weight would destroy him, Duran & Hearns ko him, watch the Hinton fight to see what Leonard & Benitez would or could do to him, other than an over his best weight Argulleo and nearing the end and an at the very end Cervantes were the only 2 decent fighters he fought, 1 was done and the other was not a natural JWW, he never ever fougth 1 Legit guy at JWW in his life and none with Power, he even avoided Saoul mamby the other best JWW at the time, and he was ranked #1 through much of Pryor's reign, how did he avoid him, so no, maybe one of the best JWW s of all time, but not one of the greatest ever of all time,.
