Aaron Pryor vs Antonio Cervantes - WBA Junior Welterweight Championship

Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor (24-0, 22 KOs) challenged the champion Antonio "Kid Pambele" Cervantes (117-13-4) for the WBA Junior Welterweight championship (140 pounds) on August 2, 1980 at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, OH. Pryor won by knock out one minute and 47 seconds into the 4th round.
This bout was nationally televised by CBS Sports. Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy are the announcers.
Aaron Pryor was World Junior Welterweight Champion from 1980 to 1985, and he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996. In 1999 the Associated Press voted him the #1 junior welterweight of the 20th century. His career record was 39 wins and 1 loss with 35 KOs.

Pryor was a madman in there. Such a high boxing IQ with a savage intensity, relentless finisher, great chin, great endurance . His skills were phenomenal . One of my all time favs and possibly the greatest 140 lb fighter of all time.

Pryor would have out-worked defensive boxers like Nicolino Locche, Wilfred Benitez, & Saul Mamby - Duran had a brief stay at 140lbs where he had a string of impressive wins before moving up again to 147lbs - he's the only guy who would have been favored to beat Pryor but that's no certainty. Pryor's jab & boxing skills seemed to be ignored leading up to the Arguello fight as well..

I remember watching this on television when I was fifteen years old. All my friends liked baseball and football, hockey, basketball. Not me. I never had an interest in any sport except for boxing, and Pryor was one of my favorites. I'd have loved to have seen him against Duran, Leonard, Benitez. Such a shame that those fights never happened. Sorry that he came to such a sad end.

Pryor along with Rocky Marciano were my two favorite fighters of all time. Both went down in the first round in while fighting for the championship. Both rose from the canvas to score knockouts.

These fights are compromised by so many unseen intangibles that it is more than a bit disappointing; here, Cervantes is pushing 40-easily. His age has always been a bit of an anomaly...in addition to this when a trained, conditioned fighter is imbued with...supplements, it's really just a matter of how long the other guy will last...in other words, Cervantes is not going to out-box this guy. There are far too many factors working against this. Even when he did lose his title, it was more like handing the baton to the next generation: Wilfred Benitez didn't age the same, however. He was a world champion at 17 as a result of that win vs. Cervantes but within 10 years his career was over. Boxing is like any other thing in this world. Beyond the phrase familiarity breeds contempt is the phrase forgetting more than your opponent knows. There's a certain threshold where one sees humanity's disappointing arc and it is represented quite strongly in these bouts I once considered important.

Pryor was offered the Leonard fight twice, $500k and $750k respectively around $2.2 million in today's money. He didn't take it. All that avoided talk is revisionist history. When he was at light welterweight and jr welterweight Leonard,Hearns and Duran were at welterweight and middle weight,so the timing just didn't match up. Pryor had Leonard's old trainer Jacobs. After Pryor vs Blackmore, Dave Jacobs told him on national TV to "Stay away from Leonard!" Pryor was pissed, but he never agreed to fight him either.

Frankie Randall comes to mind and a prime Aaron Pryor would have been way too much. The angles,hand speed, underrated defense (hard to land a clean shot on Hawk), pressure,and punching power would have befuddled the great champion. Pryor in 9TKO. I think when you assess great champions like these two you can consider factors like who they fought, how long they stayed champion etc. But, yes, it’s most interesting to guess who would have won a fight between them. I‘ll try to answer you. You make some good points my friend. I would not go out of my way to argue Chavez would win only that it would be hard to predict. I would support Pryor though as he and Sanchez are probably my two favourite fighters from that era. If Pryor would win it would be because he was naturally the bigger man so might have been too strong. Yes Chavez struggled with runners like Whitaker, but Pryor wouldn’t run from anyone. I agree Hawk’s totally unorthodox defence is under-rated but also he got knocked down cheaply several times-the sucker punch from Johnson comes immediately to mind. We tend to overlook this because he jumped straight back up making us think it was part of his plan. On Chavez I think the Taylor fight works both ways. Meldrick out-boxed him, outscored him but never hurt him. To this day I’m not sure how many clean punches he actually landed. He also took a terrible, almost un-noticed beating and was never the same again. Chavez was a brutally accurate puncher. Like Hagler or McCallum his punches were designed purely to hurt not to score. He was also one of the toughest guys ever to get in a ring. So on balance I think you have probably convinced me that Pryor would win but it would have been the hardest, closest fight of his career. @@Bramann1970

@@Bramann1970 I grew up in DC, at the height of Ray's popularity from the rep he built sparring everyone in Lorton State Penitentiary, to having the iconic group EU make the cut Knock Em Out Sugar Ray. According to the HBO doc Legendary Nights, Ray moved up in Amateurs to avoid fighting Pryor when Pryor was the number one amateur in the world. Pryor's guy Buddy Le Rosa said after their sparring sessions, he knew Ray wouldn't fight Pryor. I always thought it was Duran who offered Pryor 500,000 not Ray.Negotiations is a ploy to avoid someone, remember Pryor wasn't an Olympian and had to take 1500.00 a week to be Howard Davis sparring partner, which resulted in Pryor having to leave because he was too much for Davis. On that same Legendary Nights Doc, Pryor publicly asks Ray to fight him, stating that he had just cleaned out 140. Ray's response was my show sit down. According to a fan, him and Ray had drinks and he asked Ray about avoiding Pryor and Ray's response was would you have fought him???? Ray is an icon, never to be disrespected however he passed on Pryor, McCallum and Donald Curry. The best ever Sugar Ray Robinson passed on a guy named Charley Burley, McCallum says Hagler passed on him it happens. Making sure things are accurate is not revisionist by the way.

I distinctly recall when this fight happened. Cervantes had been a great champion, but he was past his prime, and it was questionable just how much he had left. Pryor was scary talented, but he hadn't really beaten anyone of name, as no one wanted to fight him, every lightweight ducked him. As the fight started, it seemed like Pryor may have been in over his head, but by the 3rd round, when he had cut Cervantes, his onslaught from there to the end seemed more inevitable, and his win changed the boxing world.

Armstrong and Pryor were identical in their size. Maybe Pryor was an inch taller than Armstrong,but they both were really 130 pounder fighting and knocking out much bigger guys. I've met Aaron Pryor and I know his size. Henry Armstrong defended his welterweight title 19 times in 2 years.. and himself weigh only 132~133 for all his welterweight championship fights against solid147 pounders. He even drew with 160lb middleweight world champion Seferino Garcia. But although Pryor looked and fought real crazy,he knew how to outbox other guys. Henry Armstrong could only fight inside. They both had great skills,but different types of skill. These twon had differnt kind of styles. Joe Fraizer fought like Henry Armstrong. Joe used to say he studied from watching Armstrong's old fight films. Pryor fought like his friend Leon Spinks in his prime who is very much underrated. (Leon beat the hell out of Muhammad Ali with only 7 pro.fights behind him and I don't believe he lost their rematch either.)

If that wasn't for Ali's name, he could have been disqualified. Ali was a folks hero at the time and that was the only reason he got away with it. If you watched the fight with a fair mind, you could not say Ali deserved the decision. Ali was already shut by the time. He did not beat Kenny Norton once and he did not beat Jimmy Young and Earnie Shavers either. This isn't a biased view.

They ducked Pryor and another great fighter,.....Mike Mccallum. Many of the very best names during that era wouldn't fight mccallum. The names missing from mccallum's list of opponents are; hearns, hagler, leonard, nigel benn, chris eubank, malinga, barkley, hopkins, kinchen, dewitt, sims, mugabi, nunn, sosa, roldan, and others. Those are among the very best at the time, and most of them ducked Mccallum. i'm sure a few of those guys had legitimate reasons but most were plain ducking mccallum. Mccallum was one of the best boxers in a real long time. These are some of Mccallum's victims; he knocked out these 5 great fighters;.....donald curry, milton mccrory, julian jackson, michael watson, and ayub kalule,..those 5 guys had a combined record of 149- 5-2. Knocking out those 5 guys was some great accomplishment. In addition, mccallum knocked out; David Braxton-35-1,... and Luigi Minchillo,45-3........Mccallum also defeated Steve Collins, Herol Graham, jeff harding (for the light heavy weight title at age 38 ), glenn thomas, and sean mannion......Mccallum had to fight Sumbu Kalambay twice and the great James Toney 3 times due to others ducking him..He was 1-1 against kalambay and 0-2-1 against Toney.......... The other guys in that era weren't interested in getting a boxing lesson from Mccallum............. Mccallum was so good that he went to England when he was about 34 and beat the young stud named Michael Watson. .....Watson fought and beat Nigel Benn, but lost 2 ferocious battles to Chris Eubank. ......... Watson's 2nd fight with Eubank was so brutal that Watson suffered a career ending brain injury in the epic 11th round of that fight. If you've not seen the 2nd fight between Chris Eubank and Michael Watson,......it's worth watching if any fight ever was.

Gil Clancy was not only a great trainer but one of the best boxing announcers I have ever heard. If one listened to Clancy one would hear some excellent advice on the sweet science. Pryor would have given Mayweather nightmares, and a bout with Pacman would have been a wild slug fest. I'd bet on Pryor for both of these dream bouts.

The usual story. The champion Cervantes was very competent and proved it when he sent Pryor to the canvas briefly with a sharp counter in the first round. Like most of Pryor's opponents though he couldn't hurt him and eventually succumbed to the Pryor relentless pressure.

I m surprised that people are so caught up on Aaron Pryors style when Roberto Duran had been doing it and did it against Sugar Ray Leonard. They say that the Hawk gave Sugar Ray fits in sparring, but there's a difference between sparring and a 7-figure bout in which the world will be watching. Pryor never made the jump. Benitez did it, Duran did, then they went to 154 and 160. Nothing stopping the Hawk but he never showed.

pambele aqui iba delante en las targetas y perdió del 140 mas duro en la historia, seguro con sustancias, porque gasto un millón de dolares en crack y no le resto merito, un peleador solido, benitez le gano a duran tambien, es decir no es un pambele en su mejor momento, y el rival le ganaba a cualquiera en cualquier época.....Pambele fue un buen boxeador.....

Aaron never climbed to the welterweight.Leonard , Duran and Hearn, however moved from welter to jr. middleweight.I did not see Aaron with chance to beat Leonard or Hearn.Smaller in height and reach. H e finished two wore fighter, Cervantes and Arguello.

Hypothetical speaking what I would have love to see was Floyd Mayweather Jr and Aaron Pryor both in there primes Say both in there early twenties! I don’t think Mayweather would have been able to with stand the pressure! Although an undefeated great fighter Mayweather did not do well with aggressive fighters constantly throwing punches! But strangely enough except for a very few they all slowed down before the fight ended and fought his kind of fight! Arron Pryor would not have did that! Aggression from the beginning to the end.
