The best is the guy's "aww" at the beginning, he knows he's in for a rare treat. Bruce played this song in 2005 for the first time in 18 years.

Matt O'Connor which surprises me because this was a pretty big hit for him, at least in my little corner of the mid-west. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful, and based on life events for Bruce. If I remember correctly, Bruce wrote and recorded this gem solo playing all the instruments in the original recording. Pretty cool stuff. I’m not a huge Bruce fan but this song got my attention. Definitely a masterpiece in my song lineup.

James Johnson it’s a difficult song for him to perform. He wrote it about the end of his marriage. His current wife was also present providing back up vocals in the song. I’m sure there’s some twisted history involved in it

I thought Bruce Springsteen was watching my life. Cause this song is my life. I just can't get past that first step I keep going back. I was married when he wrote this song. So much pain can make for such a beautiful song. THANK you Bruce Springsteen thanks

I bought Tunnel of Love when it came out on cassette. I liked the accustic in One Step up. Many years later, in February of 05 It was in the teens. I woke up cold and hung over. My out door furnace was about to go out. My wife of 5yrs left in October. After getting the fire started, I got in my old Ford truck. I turned the radio on Some one requested One Step Up a familiar tune that came to me like an ephifany suddenly made perfect sense, I still get a chill when I hear or play it.

Guys, he sings our lives like nobody. The words are so true we can all relate to them and the feelings behind. "When i look at myself,i (still) don't see the man i wanted to be", but i'm becoming slowly. Cheers to all of you and heal your pains and hearts. The Boss will help.

The pared back simplicity and sparseness of this song lets us all into those empty spaces, to claim as our own, and it then feels as if he's speaking and writing to us only. This is the genius of Springsteen, and it's a true life gift to those who connect with his message. I for one am a massive fan. Thanks Bruce for everything.

I know, that's how I always feel when listening to a song he wrote. Like "how did he do that". That's exactly how I feel, that's exactly what I've gone through. This guy expresses what we feel, but can't put into words. That's when you know he's simply a genius. Favorite artist ever. So many great ones, but Bruce is the best.

I love how quiet the audience is during the perormance; thank you to them for not ruining it for everyone. It seems like there's always some overly exuberant and under the influence asshat that has to ruin the vibe, but not here.

Jeez this version hits a nerve. Bruce writes the songs we'd write, if we could. Overall it feels like the guy has just spent his time on earth following me around and writing songs about it.

I heard Bruce do this song in Pittsburgh 2005. Afterwards Bruce said something along the lines that he hadn't played OSU in a long time and he should do it more. It seemed he said this in part due to the audience reacrion.

Woke up this morning my house was cold Checked out the furnace she wasn't burnin' Went out and hoped in my old Ford Hit the engine but she ain't turnin' We've given each other some hard lessons lately But we ain't learnin' We're the same sad story that's a fact One step up and two steps back Bird on a wire outside my motel room But he ain't singin' Girl in white outside a church in June But the church bells they ain't ringing I'm sittin' here in this bar tonight But all I'm thinkin' is I'm the same old story same old act One step up and two steps back It's the same thing night on night Who's wrong baby who's right Another fight and I slam the door on Another battle in our dirty little war When I look at myself I don't see The man I wanted to be Somewhere along…

I have heard his lyrics described as the "song track of our lives"....yes... Rolling Stone lists him as #4 best song writers...Dylan, McCartney, Lennon...they are all great writers, but their lyrics just don't capture what he does. And, be one hell of a nice, down to earth guy makes it all the better.

Wow, the original is very good, but the acoustic just goes to new levels. I like it much better, slower pace, and it allows the beautiful lyrics to really dig much deeper. I don't think there's a better song writer out there. I mean, there are some really good ones, Dylan is obviously great. I'll stand Bruce up to anyone though.
