Lyrics:
It's the same thing night on night
Who's wrong, baby? Who's right?
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war
When I look at myself I don't see
The man I wanted to be
Somewhere along the line I slipped off track
I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back

This is a song Bruce wrote when his marriage to Julianne Phillips was going south. They ended up divorcing a year later. What's haunting is that his future wife Patti Scialfa is singing backup. They had an affair and Bruce owned up to it and also admitted he was the cause of the divorce. He married Patti in 1991 and they are still married. I don't condone adultery but Bruce was with the wrong woman and he found the right one and everything turned out great. I think 3 kids too. I love this song. I don't even know why -- I can't relate to it. I'm happily marrried 17 years and no adultery :) Thanks for a great song, Bruce.

I agree Kevin. I was married for 40 years when my husband died. It has been 7 years and I miss him so much. I love this song and yes I remember that Bruce and Patti fell in love on the road. He and Julianne werent a good match but he is happy now and its all good. Sometimes you find the right person the first t ime and sometimes you dont. I fell in love with my husband when we were in high school and i was 16. Married at 18.

@@jamesgannon6192 Or maybe the acceptance of your own shortcomings as a man and an acceptance of your sins. Anyone can write a song about love lost by the failings of another but this song speaks to his own failure and where he fell short in his own expectations of himself. There can be regret for love lost but it doesn’t hurt near as much or cut near as deep as love lost due to your own bad decisions or fault. He did it to himself. It will haunt him. The lyric I didn’t hear at 17 but I hear and feel at 53.

This song really touches the saddest parts of human life and culture. Disappointment, rejection, addiction, self-pity, regret…..it’s all there and we’ve all felt some of it. That why this song is so good. It uses music which opens us up to emotional reaction then kicks our ass with lyrics that we all could have written on a bad day. Nice job Bruce. Pretty sure he was feeling the loss and failure of his first marriage when he wrote it. I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Stripper bar? That's classy? Lol....I loved the finger picking on the guitar- it's hypnotic. Our boy Bruce got down from hero mountain to join the rest of us. He fell in love and he couldn't make it work. He became human, that's why "One Step" resonates so strong..Cause this time he wasn't observing, he was in it. It's all over his face in the video, he won't even look directly at the camera. I would sit in the bar, meeting women, having a great time, drinking beer from a glass shaped like a boot. But I was still getting over her three years down the line. I had some tragic romantic vibe going that the women liked. You get over it, you have to. But it marks you, I'm sure Bruce Springsteen would agree with that. "One Step up and two steps back."

One of my favorite Bruce songs. The “Tunnel of Love” album documented the breakup of his first marriage. It always amazes me how a good songwriter can take something as personal as the break-up of a marriage, and put it on a kind of “universal” feel to it, that anyone can relate to. Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms, The music was never ending, We danced as the evening sky faded to black One step up, two steps back

I have a close friend that is a musician with songs that some big bands have used and he always told me the best song writing done is when someone is in pain. Fleetwood Mac did it as well. Bruce no doubt is one of the best lyrics writers out there. Him, Tom Petty, Stevie nicks just gold.

Woke up this morning, the house was cold Checked out the furnace, she wasn't burnin' Went out and hopped in my old Ford Hit the engine but she ain't turnin' We've given each other some hard lessons lately But we ain't learnin' We're the same sad story, that's a fact One step up and two steps back Bird on a wire outside my motel room But he ain't singin' Girl in white outside a church in June But the church bells, they ain't ringing I'm sittin' here in this bar tonight But all I'm thinkin' is I'm the same old story, same old act One step up and two steps back It's the same thing night on night Who's wrong, baby? Who's right? Another fight and I slam the door on Another battle in our dirty little war When I look at myself I don't see The man I wanted to be Somewhere along the line I slipped off track I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back There's a girl across the bar I get the message she's sendin' Mmm she ain't lookin' too married And me, well, honey I'm pretending Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms The music was never-ending We danced as the evening sky faded to black One step up and two steps back One step up and two steps back One step up and two steps back
