I don't think excessively long lists of notes are necessary, but I really hate the new trend where brands are only listing 3 notes total - that's just not enough. I think listing 2-3 notes each for the top/mid/base is a good middle ground, which is pretty much how you do it.

It really depends on the parfum and what the creator wants to have us smelling. Old fragrances from the 80s are loaded with scent notes and accords and sometimes it is hard to get the concept behind the fragrance.

I like a description that tells me “If you put this on, you will smell like A, B and C” in a concise, compact manner. If theres a ton of compounds listed I do get curious sometimes because I want to look up what they are but sometimes I can’t be bothered and would just prefer to be able to read what the notes are and what mood the fragrance wants to evoke.

I prefer note breakdowns in the “Goldilocks” range. Not too much, not too little. I just want to know the key notes that most people would recognize so I can determine if I’d like to try it.

I haven’t purchased a fragrance with a long list of notes just yet. I wouldn’t know. But simplicity seems to be better for me as of now. And yeah from the fragrances I have tried from you have all be great but the Oud fragrances are the best. That’s your specialty!

I like the top, mid and base note listed. I work with perfumers and we have a fragrance and flavor division at the company I work at so I appreciate knowing what the notes are. Also certain notes give me headaches so knowing the notes are very helpful!

Hey Mr. Hughes! My STRONG recommendation for your next review is "Xerjoff Blend Tony Iommi Monkey Special". I guarantee that it will be worth your time (if you can get your hands on a bottle, as it is almost always sold out). Very complex, very dark, beautiful and would be a joy for a master perfumer like you to review. There is so much going on in this fragrance, it truly is one for the ages. A true masterpiece by Xerjoff!

For an EDP Oud I would like to see Top: Labdanum, Tobacco Leaf , Guiacwood Middle: Myrrh, Incense , Cinnamon , Cashmeran Base: Oud, Cedarwood, Akigalawood, A bit more complex than some I'd say. What would these notes do? Probably a smoky and resinous Oud? But the Cedar, Myrrh , Tobacco Leaf and Labdanum may help round out the Oud and Cinnamon potency. Then the Cashmeran can help too. I am not big on florals too much. I think that's too soft of a note. Myrrh , Cashmeran or Frankincense I'd prefer over florals or most citrus notes. I wonder how those notes I listed would smell blended together? I have no idea

Aaron you’ve got to try the Amouage silver oud , it says oud and gives oud , not sure of the silver part of the name, it’s sweet smoky smooth oud , it’s like all the other players are doing their jobs to make the striker shine. I know there’s supposed to be seasonal fragrances but I’d let people choke on my trail of silver oud in the middle of the summer 😂has to be my favourite fragrance at the moment and definitely worth getting the original from Harrods

I was wearing oud royale around 10 - 15 times this year. Its really easy to wear fragrance but it is coming from the same DNA as Gucci oud intense and Orto Parisi - Terroni which are more afforrdable and in my opinion overall better fragrance. Aaron I know you reviewed Gucci Intense Oud, can you tell me your opinion of how close they are?

I don't like all these notes' break-downs, because in majority of cases there are without any sense, just a marketing thing which grabs people attention and wallets. There are very few examples, where the notes are listed quite precisely, in sort of connection with the perfume's construction. Fabulous vid, as always Aaron.

Don’t make it simple. Designers give you three notes because most of the clientele is not aware enough and they can’t grasp the concept or understand the notes. Roja lists everything that pops into his mind to make it seem like the composition is a work of art, expensive amalgam based even on the description. An illusion of automatic greatness and expensiveness. I love knowing what’s inside, I’m one of the people who enjoy the craft and rarity of ingredients. I love Amouage as they list the rare ingredients, especially the natural ones. Each note in Boundless they gave is natural and that makes me pleased and satisfied with the product. Have some balance.

Oud Royal was my #1 fragrance discovery in 2022. I was immediately blown away by it, but I have to admit that when I wear it, it fades much too fast. However, after I'd been a patchouli fanatic for many years Oud Royal got me started exploring oud fragrances by other houses. It's been quite an adventure. Speaking of which, there's an oud formulation of Emporio Armani's Stronger With You that you might want to check out.

I kind of know what I’m going to get from the notes now but if there are so many notes and it costs say £500 for a 100ml I would only try a sample because the levels of notes, I feel I don’t really know what I’m buying without trying first. The price of some of these samples might put me off. Although it’s nice to know the supporting notes it’s nice to know the overall feel of the prominent ones imo x

I don't think an exhaustive note list is necessary, it probably only hurts. If there are notes/accords that are meaningful that I have experience with that I really like, or do not like at all, then it's important and should be listed. Mostly, the more negative notes are important. Ex for myself anything that smells like licorice, like anise, I will avoid the fragrance, I really don't like licorice smells. But if it is such a small supporting element that it's not notable I probably would not notice or care, and so if I were making a fragrance I would not list it. Similarly, if I loved a note like Neroli, but it was not a clearly a notable element of a fragrance, I would be confused or maybe disappointed.

I am totally overwhelmed by all the notes, but i always have loved fragrance. But I would just rate them intuïtively. But watching videos like yours I think I get a bit more educated. My first scent was Chanel Egoiste. Think I bought it because of the commercial (still love thata great time capsule) and because Chanel. I am from a working clas family and owning that made me feel two classes up. I blind-bought it and had to get used to the scent. It smelt like christmas and warm. Recently bought it again (for sentimental reasons) and focussed more on the ingredients. I had an epithomy. I smelled roses, with orange on the side and spices like clove and cinemon. I guess it takes some time to get more of the notes especially when it is blended well. Makes you appreciate the artform. And now i do not only like Egoïste. I think it is a masterpiece. Who would think a rose central scent can be so masculine.

Less notes are better as long as they are “accurate”. It’s impossible to pick off specific notes when there are dozens blended together. It’s a lot like blended scotch: the more that are used, the harder it is to pick off any one constituent

Amazing review as always. Regarding the note breakdown, I agree. Most of the time you can describe a fragrance with three notes and the rest of the listed are just nuances or hints, little smell-alikes. Seeing you pulled the trigger on a few high end (and price) fragrances. Have you heard of Oud Vanille from Franck Olivier? That's perhaps the sexiest commercial "oud" I've smelled (As it is only an oud accord and not the real thing). It's playful, animalic, sexy and attention grabbing dare I say. For me it's a dirtier Parfums de Marley Herod which I remember you marked 10/10 on your review.

I don't mind if they list something "exotic" but if the list goes on and on then it does kind of all get lost and I just hone in on the notes I notice the most/that stick out, lol If there is something special about the notes I would prefer some kind of explanation or sorts, not one of those "a rosefield in france in 1867" type descriptions but more like you do here in your videos There is one thing I wonder btw, I own two of your fragrances, one have the name written in red, the other does not, what makes a fragrance get the red letters/text? (the fragrances are notorious and daddy btw I think both are great but out of the two my favorite is daddy, and I want to try more of your oud fragrances!)

I feel like when tons of notes are listed, it's a turn-off for me. I've honestly never purchased a Roja fragrance because i feel like it's done to jusitfy sometimes outright ridiculous pricing. I understand and can absolutely appreciate some materials are very expensive, and if the materials and notes listed are truly used, i have absolutely no problem paying for it, but when you list 20-30-40 notes.. come on.. It's kinda like a hey, im special look at me, type of thing. I like direct, to the point, and honesty in what's used, it helps me appreciate the artistry in the fragrance and skill involved. I'm obviously no where near a perfumer but i feel like if you had 5-10 notes and made a masterpiece that is far more impressive to me then taking 30 notes and making a fragrance and i find i cant pull half the notes out. Random side note I heard about and have been very interested in your brand for about 8 months now. I never knew you had a youtube channel. i stumbled upon it yesterday, and i think I've already watched 3/4 of your videos. So much passion and knowledge it's so impressive. You can tell how much you love what you do and ive learned more about perfumery in the past 24 hours then i have in the last 5 years. I'm so grateful i found this so thankyou for all your hard work and im putting in my oders this weekend because im even more intrigued now i cant not order. I'm starting off with 4-5 for now. i can't wait. 🙏🔥🤘
