I collect antique outboard boat motors and I use this method to make gaskets. You can grease one side of the gasket if you want to disassemble the motor later without destroying it. I also keep pinking and cuticle shears and hole punches for cutting them out.

Good trick. To make it faster, instead of tracing the shape onto the gasket material, you could use spray paint very lightly over the masking tape.

A wise old mechanic taught me a neat trick. Place the gasket material/cornflake packet then get a small hammer and hit the edge of the part your are trying to seal and it will cut a neat cut out of it.
@yelasilo50765 жыл бұрын
That's how i do it too..but i used a spoon not a hammer.its quite safer i guess 😅
@joetroutt74255 жыл бұрын
I've seen many ppl tighten screws/bolts down to the point of stripping or breaking. Telling someone to hit it with a hammer will definitely ensure them heading to the part store for a new part and gasket after breaking their old one.

I had an old scooter that needed a new cylinder gasket. 😂 It ran just fine for a few years actually. But now I can afford proper gaskets so I wait a couple weeks for them to ship instead of doing this but it is always good to know this kind of thing in an emergency.

I've made it for a cylinder head before out of cardboard. It works, but I'd highly suggest using copper or aluminum if you are going to make a head gasket. A simple cylinder gasket is fine to use cardboard for.

There is a flaw in all these “emergency” gasket deals isn’t it? An emergency (as most of us think of it) is when you are in the middle of nowhere and your parts store is either not near, closed or just don’t have your part. If you are in the middle of nowhere and need a gasket what makes you think you will be able to find a store to buy CF, eat them (no waste) and make your gasket? I see the creative aspect of it. I do not see the $ saving element

Tax2Me probably a magazine or scrap piece of paper kicking about in the car somewhere! I once made a Water pump fast for my car out of a fashion mag front page and used Vaseline as the sealant. It held up for 30k miles before I refurbished the whole engine.

The point is that knowing how to do it is better than not and piece of card is far easier to source than the correct gasket or even gasket paper. There are literally thousands of things you could use such as the box from a takeaway burger or the front page of the handbook in the glove box.
