About twelve years ago, I bought a triple locked 94 in perfect condition with 160k as a family hauler for $5,000; main reason I got it was because it had third row seating. We had owned it for about five years when I realized how great of a vehicle this was. Still haven't done any major mods on it but we'll probably never get rid of it. Love this thing so much.

I’m picking up my ‘91 FJ 80 tomorrow. And to hear you say “Dude, you made it!” Dude! We Made It. Mine is a fixer upper, no interior but no rust and straight frame. So I’ll be building from the ground up on a budget as well. #BudgetBallers

I was definitely guilty of modding before baselining my 80. Left me stranded in the desert with an 80 and no coolant. I replaced every cooling system component myself and now runs like a champ.

great vid. I'm not in America, but my exp w LC in both Africa and Indonesia for off road cueing, is better w narrow tires always, I never try to bogg into mud for fun. But after 30 years exp, getting through thick wetsand, rainmud, and dunesand, narrow is a must. I think personally fat tires are more for climbing and looks. Lots of love for the great info and the LC peeps

G'day from Australia. Cool vid, just subscribed 👍 Love my Landcruisers, they are quintessentially Australian. My parents had a petrol 80 back in the 90's, then my mum had a 2002 100 series with the mighty turbo diesel 1HD-FTE (beautiful car) and my dad currently has a 2018 200 series with the V8 twin turbo diesel (beast). I just bought my first cruiser, 1996 80 series 1FZ-FE and currently doing repairs and maintenance before I think about any mods. Love it already though!

Love your content. Finally a channel that shows me how to do something and not just how cool your truck is. Can you do a video on the proper way to grease the slip yokes and gear splines on the drive shafts. The service manual says to pump grease until it comes through the seal. A ton of other online resources say grease until the drive shaft barely moves and warms us to not over grease this spot because too much grease can damage some components in the transfer case. Let us know your thoughts and help us keep everything maintained.

Found your channel today. Good content although of course petrol engined. I have two 80's as daily drives here in the bush. 1HZ & 1HD-T. So damn strong, just amazing. They both live off-road and do 90% dirt roads because of where I live and work. Biggest issue is tracking down the body squeaks and groans. Now that is a full time job.😂

They’re not really that expensive. It’s just the previous owners don’t do any maintenance because it’s “indestructible”. It is but you have to do some things to keep it running right (birfields, rear main seal, etc.). There are great ones out there that need nothing. Buy the best one you can afford and it’s surprisingly cheap to operate. Remember, rust is your enemy

I owned a LC80 VX 1997 diesel with triple lockers and I installed 38” tires on it with 6” lift and I didn’t have any problems with it,it was a very good and reliable car and many do run 44” tires on them here in Iceland,that’s nessisary when you are driving up onto the glaciers and to and from when most of the regular roads are covered with snow.

Lot of people in-the-know, recommends 33" tires to be the pinnicle sweetspot for FJ80 (It's true for 100 series as well) You get plenty of ground clearance, drives well, don't have to ninjablade the body everywhere, don't have to compromise the drivetrain reliability, and MPG doesn't take a nosedive.

From my experience on my ‘97 lx450: if triple locked and they won’t engage in a parking lot after turning and messing around etc, get all four tires off the ground (blocks), then engage lockers. should work. also check all fluids in engine, transmission, coolant etc. make sure there has been a headgasket done recently, or you have one on hand and ready for when you may need to replace it. hopefully before it’s too late. (personally had to buy a whole new short block from Toyota, hoses, practically a new car). i’ve replaced all my track bars and control arm bushings. sway bars may need some attention too, mine weren’t that bad. BIRFIELDS. they will need work. if you want to get them done, do it right. don’t half ass it. it’s long and may be frustrating but it is worth it to replace all gaskets, new red moly grease, new bearings etc. suspension, if you plan on 2 inches or more, also plan on “Drop Blocks.” SLEE Off-road sells them, that’s what I have on my Lexus. i’m running with a 2 inch lift. interior may also be an issue, just buy some cheap seat covers if you plan of repairs in the near future, if not then buy some quality covers. speakers too, chances are that they might be a little blown. RUST. it will be somewhere (sadly). don’t worry, make sure it isn’t structural. it’s preventable if you care enough to dump the time and money into it. if there are any other questions, i recommend the website ih8mud.com. there are millions of LandCruiser enthusiasts on there, don’t be afraid to post some simple questions or concerns. EDIT: forgot to mention to go to forums on the website ih8mud.com to find and answer any questions or concerns. there’s forums for 40 series, 60’s, 80’s (aka lx450’s), 100’s, 200’s. i promise that the people on there are the friendliest on the internet, they also tend to be smart asses. and yes, LandCruisers are an addiction, they also cost a lot more than drugs haha. if you have questions, i have an instagram so feel free to message me. (justus.juice) Have Fun!

Ive owned my fzj80 center locked for about 6 years now and I can confirm this list is solid. The most important thing on this list is baselining, specifically replacing every hose. I've replaced so many parts on my cruiser. If you pick one up, you'll need to be ready to do a lot of deferred maintenance and preemptive maintenance.

I have a FZJ80 with part time 4x4, so it automatically has a centre lock. I added a lunchbox locker to the front because I have nearly got stuck a few times by getting cross axled. It does everything I could ask of it. I don't really like a rear locker because it can get you into real trouble & you end up on your roof. Learnt that driving a Unimog in my military days. It pivots around the back wheel that has traction & turns you sideways when you are climbing something steep.

My 1992 80 with 1hz diesel has done over 700 k km's on the original motor. Biggest problem is body rust. It has no lockers but does have a 5 speed manual box.

Rather than harbor freight tools, l recommend craftsman or better. Christmas discounts on tool sets are real. I got a small set for under the driver's seat.

regarding bigger tires.... you said.... might reduce mpg. please allow this old man to shed some light___ in the past some people have argued on this and then one day I heard a really old guy explain it better..... real simple... elementary physics and math... bigger circle requires more energy to turn. Smaller tire takes less energy to turn_____________ what do you think of that "old guy answer"🙂

Whoops! I don’t have an 80 series but felt compelled to click on your channel after seeing that impeccable LC on the thumbnail! Love that color! 😎 (I have a 100 series and feel deprived since I only take care of maintenance. No mods...yet.)

Yeah but most vintage car owners know this stuff, us douchy landcruiser bros get the glassy eyed stare of seeing all the shit we need to put on our cruiser before making them reliable haha.

Our 97 40th anniversary 3x locked has never and I mean NEVER left us stranded, 240k miles and still running brand new. I agree that you shouldn’t think badly about yourself if you don’t have the 3x locked version. To be honest for most people the standard center locker is perfect and I haven’t been in any situations when I have needed the front and rear to be locked. Unless you plan on wheeling then yes the 3x locked version is the way to go.

One positive about putting bigger tires is that your RPM's will go down and you will get better MPG in the freeway! The engine has enough horse power with the factory 4.10 gears and will be fine. No one cares that the speedometer/odometer will be off a little. That's what the speed app on your phone is for. 😉

Less rpm’s yes, but massive increase on heave rotational mass x4. Food for thought.
@JacopoSkydweller
@JacopoSkydweller 11 ай бұрын
RPM's go down per rotation, but to go the same speed (75MPH) on stock tires vs say 35s, but that also means you have much less torque available for say passing, going up hills etc. Thus you actually need to floor it in order to get the same power you would have had on smaller size tires. You will definitely not get better MPG's with bigger tires, the rotational mass/increased sidewall flexion will use more energy than you gain by going a larger diameter. And assuming you get a much wider tire on your cruiser like everybody does (they shouldn't, look up pizza cutter tires vs wide to see why) You will have even more drag.

I love my 80 series, I have a 93 4.5L petrol Sahara triple locked, I live in Australia legally we can only have a 2inch on standard tires and 2inch lift without engineering, don't forget to mention when you do your lift you need a 2inch castor correction
