The iconic 80 series is to this day the best built off road truck produced by Toyota in Japan. Question is, which year and engine is the very best Land Cruiser 80?
With full floating axles, ability to lock the differentials (not in all models) and it's robustmess built for 25 years of hard service before needing any major engine work, this is the Toyota to have!
The engineers over built the 80 in the mid-nineties when the economy was booming in Japan.
They would have to put an addendum to their 25 year claim (now that we are here) and change it to 50 years!
There were 547,000 models of the 80 series made.
Japan kept 107,000, which mostly were Diesels, and the US got 89,000 of which 14,000 were LX450s and 16,000 were the early 91-92 FJ80 models with the carry over FJ62 3FE engine with 155hp.
In 1993, Toyota upped the power plant with a 24 valve 212hp inline 6 gas engine in the US. These are known as the FZJ80s, produced from 1993 through 1997.
You may hear the term " Triple locked". This refers to the Front and rear locking differentials, with that coveted "Magic dial" located lower right of the Steering wheel on the dash. There were roughly 30% of all US destine Land Cruiser with this option. All Land Cruisers had the Center locking differential, a button on the FJ80, and automatic on the FZJ80 when you switched the transfer case to Low. However you can do the 7 pin conversion, and put a button up front on your dash to activate the center lock with the transfer case in high position. A simple DIY conversion.
Now that the mall crawlers have had their leases terms come to an end long ago on these 80s, and the overland community starts to acquire the 80 series, we are seeing an increase in the market here in the US and also abroad.
With the 25 year import rule, there are Diesel Landcruisers entering the US market. In the US, we never were privileged to receive the Diesels... until now since the 25 years year wait has elapsed!
The HDJ81s are now entering the US and are we in for a treat. The Diesel engines are not only incredible, but get 2x the MPGs compared to their gas powered counterparts.
From the naturally Aspired HZ1 to the 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, the ultimate power plants. The latest giving 169hp and 265ft lbs of torque at low RPMs,
It will be interesting to see where the 80 series Land Cruiser market will go.
Most certainly it will be up.
As clean rust free low mileage models are more difficult to come across, the prices will reflect so.
In addition, most buyers these days are over landers, and they outfit their LC80s with armor, sliders, suspension lifts, roof racks and it isn't uncommon to see 20-25k worth of goodies being added to these Iconic Trucks.
That's right... Trucks not SUVs. These are body on frame construction... just like trucks.
The Land Cruiser has earned it's respect over the decades and the 80 series being the ultimate example of the Land Cruiser blood line.

Not to Be gloomy, but me and the wife ( an R.N ) of 22 years are in our 50s. I'm disabled n she had neck surgery that went wrong. We lost our car , then residence we rented and ended up living in the woods,then a barn, then a mission house where I currently am. I lost her a year ago after we both caught the ( cold). so we were living off 740 a month. I pay 400 a month for our room here. I saved n bought a 95 fzj80 in moonglow off the 1st owner ( a Korean rock soldier) for 4 grab. 199.000 miles. All service records since new ,even sales window papers .about 50 grand . No diff lock. Everyday driver. Needs a few things but its driven every day. I passed it every day for a week n finally decided to stop. Wow!! It was hiding under a half inch of crud lol...anyway....I knew what was coming ,am poor but a mechanic . Soon I'll be living in it with my red nose... End of story....named Her after My Wife....Harriet 💯

When i bought my LC off the lot November 7, 1991 (It’s ‘92) no one told me that was not the one to get. I’m 72. I’ve driven it most every day now since I crashed my Porsche and bought this when I was 39. 202,000 miles. I’m still as crazy about it as I was the day i bought it for $35,000. I may not get there fast, but I’ll definitely get there.

Hi there, really enjoying your videos, thank you. You mentioned you would have liked a manual, well I have just that, a 1995 VX 24 valve 1HD-FT manual with 312k miles on the clock. Leather interior, walnut trim with sunroof, apparently you either got a sunroof or fridge but not both, personally would have preferred the fridge here in South Africa buy hey ! I looove this truck so much it makes me smile every time I get into it. I have had it for 20 years now and still perfect. I believe it is the UK spec, hence the miles and it also has the snow curtain in front of the radiator and headlight sprays. Glad to hear you guys are keeping the dream alive. Regards Dave

The best landcruiser is the one you own and gets used every day and could tell stories themselves. I have a basic 1995 1hz with vinyl seats, no frills. Equipped with a fridge and freezer, oven,pantry, hot shower,40l water and rooftop tent, bullbar and scrub (side) rails. In 95 they went to disc brakes all round so I'd say that and above is the sweet spot. The 1hz is still sold in New models in Africa and middle East and are still used in all united nations landcruisers because they are so reliable. They are a bit slow when towing but and struggles when going up hills, but in a low gear can climb and pull anything. I know you guys in USA don't get them but the ute or truck version of the landcruisers are great also the troop carriers are really popular. The 79 series until 07 were pretty much the same running gear and engines on a slightly longer chassis and very basic and user friendly for any maintenance

Cool vid. The fj60 and 62 isn't dicated by the round or square headlights. The round headlight 1986 60 series came with a 3f dictating it the fj62. 60 had 2f 62 had 3f. My fte 100 series towing a small boat 1200km averaged 12L per 100km . My petrol 80 series averaged around 18l per 100km. My turbo fzj 79 series sat around 27L per hundred.

@@CruisingTheLand I would like to know what your opinion is on the Ls swap? For the fj80. I've seen tons of videos but no follow up videos 3 or 4 years after they swapped. Just got back from Alabama Hills this weekend and my 91 fj80 nearly didnt make it up the Mt. Whitney hill. I know I need to rehear but I don't know if that would even help with the 3fe motor.
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand 2 жыл бұрын
in the 3FE motor, yes LS swap. it is popular for 60 series to do the LS swap sinnce the 2F and 3FE motors are slow and have big trouble uo hills. The FZJ80, not so much... really no swaps. however, the FJ80 199-1992, absolutely candidates for the swap, since they are like FJ62, just heavier which makes it worse.

90 and 120 series are in the Prado line.... A bit smaller, usually less powerful and a bit more like a tall 4Runner instead of a full blown Land Cruiser. I have a 100 series and see the Prado's in traffic all the time (Central America). The Prado's just aren't the same.

I really think 80 series are the sweet spot for a mix of offroading & touring. So capable for 4wding yet just a few creature comforts to make them feel modern. The supercharger is the only reason I still have my cruiser, I went to college in the mountains and was running over Monarch or Vail pass just about every other weekend for work. It went from 2nd gear ragging it out to O/D off and being able to comfortably maintain 70 at 2,900 rpms with 37s and swing out and all. Pretty darn stout motors. G'day. Just found your channel via this video & I have subscribed. I have a 1993 manual HDJ80R GXL, with the 1HD-T, which I've owned for 10 years. I wish I knew back then what I know now, because, although I have a great 4wd, I would not have bought this particular one. In 1992, the 80 Series went from 15" to 16" rims, to fit the upgraded bigger diameter disc brake rotors. Also, to bear in mind, in Australia at least, the towing capacity was increased in late 1996, from 2.5 ton to 3.5 ton, so if you want to tow, you want to look at the really late 1996 to 1997 80 Series. There was also 4 diesel engines available, the 1HZ (12 valve naturally aspirated), 1HD-T (12 valve factory turbo), 1HD-FT (24 valve factory turbo) & the 1HD-FTE (24 valve factory turbo electronic fuel injection) Personally I believe the KISS mantra (Keep It Simple Stoopid) so the less electronics the better. Thus I am looking for a 1HD-FT engine. Supposedly (I need to confirm) the Sahara models came standard with beefier axles. They also came standard with the triple lockers, center console fridge & ice tray, & dual zone, climate control, air conditioning. So my Holy Grail to find, is a 1997 Sahara with 1HD-FT engine, & manual gearbox I will be going back to see your previous videos
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand Жыл бұрын
Great insight! Would you say the 24 valve 1HD-FT is when the tow capacity went up to 3.5 ton? In the US, the 93 and up only came in the 1FZ-FE, hence tow capacity was maxed out at 5000 lbs versus the HDJ81 in 1996 of 7700 lbs. That's great news! Maybe now I can tow my FJ40 with confidence.
@MicahBell_1860
@MicahBell_1860 Жыл бұрын
Nissan Patrol upgraded their towing capacity to 3.5ton@@CruisingTheLand so Toyota matched them so as to not lose sales. Funny thing is, the chassis was not upgraded, the suspension was not upgraded, the brakes were not upgraded & the Hayman Reece towbar was not upgraded. Nothing was upgraded, not even the engine. They just put a new placard on them. Many have said that as nothing was changed the older ones could tow the same, (& theoretically they are correct) but because they are not placarded, they will be fined for overweight towing (at least here in Australia & guessing by what you jus5 said, also in the USA, mayb3 even the rest of the world). Now I keep forgetting, but it is either August, September or October 1996 when this upgraded towing weight came into effect

Very true. My 1993 Land Cruiser cost almost $49,000 when it was new. Still got the original window sticker. That was a shit load of money back then. I was lucky, because I used to work for a Toyota Dealership. The owner used to let me drive his for Dealership errands, and later sold it to me cheap because he knew how much I loved it. She's now got close to half a million miles, with original alternator, AC compressor, fuel injection, power steering pump and rack, and starts everytime you turn the key. With regard to gas mileage, I've owned my '96 for 23+ years now and have always averaged 11.5 - 12mpg in AZ as a daily driver (200k+ miles). That's 65mph highway speeds (but who does that) and lots of city driving. I moved to hilly Hawaii and shipped the LC over and now average 16 - 17mpg. Most roads here are 35 - 45mph with an occasional 50 - 60mph in the rural areas... My setup looks nearly identical to your moonglow FZJ80 so its really driving at high speeds that seems to kill the gas mileage.
