Do you ever get nervous about squatters in these places? Do you take anything to protect yourself? I went to Joyland Amusement Park Kansas-and it’s hard to not be afraid of finding someone at every turn. (I remember when you came here and explored it!) Makes it hard to enjoy the beauty of the abandoned when you feel nervous about safety. 😬😩

This place is in Allendale, Indiana and is called "Rocky Edge". A weekend retreat of Chapman Root whose company designed the original curved body coke bottle. Interesting that HE gets the credit (as usually happens) when in reality he didn't have much to do with the design. The man who actually sketched the bottle design and produced the first prototypes was named Earl Dean, a staff machinist at Root Glass. Wonder if he made enough money to build a mansion? Somehow I doubt it. Still, this place is way cool. According to records the Root family sold thi property in the 1960s. From what I can find it may have been sitting empty for only about a decade. Last year the owners were going through a divorce and a judge ordered it sold.

Raymond Lowey, I believe, is often credited with the design of the Coke bottle, but I think I read that he actually refined a previous design that remains to this day. An industrial designer, he was quite the renaissance man, and this house would have fit him to a tee; old photos show expensive suits and silk ascots! Also designed a famous airline logo, can't remember which one, as well as the gorgeous 1963 Studebaker Avanti, a car which was so far ahead of it's time for the period. A lot of retrofitting (dropped ceiling in the kitchen, new and cheap cabinets in that small kitchen that covered the arched alcove built into the old wall), such a shame that people back then couldn't recognize artistry when they saw it. Looked like a foundation by the outdoor kitchen area, wonder what was there? I love your stuff! Look forward to each episode. I really wonder which Coca-Cola man it actually was...
@debrasue5986
@debrasue5986 5 жыл бұрын
No, actually the bottle designs is one of the few things Lowey didn’t design for Coca Cola. The bottle was designed by the Root Glass Company. This mansion is called Rocky Edge and is in Indiana. This is the owner of Root Glass Company’s home. Chapman Root.
@hotrodpop1973
@hotrodpop1973 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Debra Sue, you're much more knowledgeable than I am obviously, so the Lowey Coke bottle thing is totally untrue, as I understood that he refined an existing design and sort of smoothed it out a bit? Seems the curves of the early 1900's bottle were much sharper and more exaggerated. Neither here nor there. Wonder why that beautiful house was ever left to rot...
@debrasue5986
@debrasue5986 5 жыл бұрын
Paul, I’m certainly not as knowledgeable as you on Raymond Lowey. The only reason I know about this home is because one of my sons did a paper on famous peoples homes in Indiana and this was one of them. I had no knowledge of Raymond Lowey until I read your comment. Thanks so much for sharing!! I looked into him a little bit after I read your comment. He was definitely an interesting and creative man! And you’re correct, in that he refined the original design. So essentially, both men designed the Coca Cola bottles 👍🏼😊

@@hotrodpop1973 Yes, just a few days ago, another KZbin video attributed the invention of the Coke bottle to Raymond Loewy, but I just Googled it, and though several sites still attribute the bottle design to him, the site, "Coke and the Legacy of Raymond Loewy," says not. He _was_ part of the team that designed the larger bottles (the original contour bottle held only six or seven ounces). The site is fascinating: you see his design for everything from Coke coolers and dispensers to the special Coca-Cola delivery trucks. Debra Sue is right. Thanks Debra Sue!

This is an authentic piece of American history that I hope is preserved. The first Coca-Cola bottle, a world-famous trademark was created in 1915 at Root Glass Company, by Chapman J. Root, T. Good video, I don't know why these people at these places let them get in such disrepair. they could sell them at a certain point and make a lot more money than just running away from them. Thank you for sharing keep up the good work.

Start a petition to the "Coca Cola Co." to restore it, & use it as a bed & breakfast/ museum. It would be nice to save it, rather than watch all of that old world craftsmanship, & history rot away. They can afford to do it. 👍

if it's really form the 1920s it´s almos 100 years old!! the kitchen and most of the rooms seem to have more recent furniture (70s I think) but the pool and the green house are 1920s all the way!!! great video.

How cool, fascinating to see the crib of the dude who thought up such a iconic bottle design that's recognised all over the world. Somewhat amazing that it has been left to decay and isn't some form of national treasure. 😏💯👍🏼

I cringe when I see a drop ceiling but the woodwork is nice. They should let contractors take parts outta these old houses to give em a new home.

That was an absolutely beautiful home at on time. It should have Ben turned in to a museum, not left to rot. Great video, thank you for documenting. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
