Hey guys thanks for watching. We bought the truck for $300. And all the parts thus far were around 400. So we got it on the road less than $1000 using as much as humanly possible that was on the truck and rebuilding what we had to. Check out the Merch ! theetravisb.com

I would love to see more on this truck, you don't have to do a full restoration, but it'd be cool to see this truck become road worthy and get some cosmetic bits like that dent pulled out of the grill, new winshield, headlights, etc. After doing some of those things it could be a decent truck for around town/ picking up parts and such.

I have that same electric impact gun. My late wife and I bought it to use on the motorhome we had because it seems that nearly every tire store had knuckleheads that believed the tires weren't on right unless the rims were welded to the hubs so they'd set their air impacts to the highest range. I had one incidence when I hit a piece of 2x4 in the road (too late to turn when I saw it), blew an inside dual and it took over an hour with the electric gun to finally break the wheel loose so I could change the tire. From then on until we sold the coach I never allowed an air impact to be used in putting tires back on.

Back in the '70s, I had a '49 KB1 P.U. as my daily driver. That flathead 6 went through so much oil, I bought cheap non-detergent oil in 5 gallon cans and carried it around in the back of the truck so I could top it off on a regular basis! Fun truck though. With those tall, skinny tires it would go anywhere. One VERY snowy day, it was just me and the snowplows out on the roads.

For future projects, keep In mind that they make a tool to handle the brake shoe springs. It looks like a huge pair of needle nose pliers with a pad on one prong and a curved hook on the other prong. One handle ends in a round disc that works with the pivot point springs in the middle of the shoes. Back in the day before disc brakes (I’m 75 y/o) every auto parts store had this drum break tool in stock. If you hunt around Im sure that you can find one.

Nice save. Great to see this running. It would be nice to see it made roadworthy, windshield, a seat, lights, bang out a few dents in the fenders, just chip away at it and make it a driver. Probably way to expensive to restore, but over time, you could probably bring it back drive around. BTW, my Dad used avoid stretching metal and to have greater control over the process when beating out dents in body panels by taking them off and lying them in deep sand and beating out the dents into the sand. Seemed to work very well.

My wife’s brothers were not close with their dad and I tried to tell them to cherish their time with him. Some days he would ask them to do something and they wouldn’t take time. I filled in. Most times he wanted to go get a cup of coffee and talk to his old friends.

You can use heat to fix old copper washers. Heat the washer to red hot and let cool. Used washers get work hardened, this heat up cool down softens the washers. This lets them seal just fine. Some brake washer like those for motorcycle brakes have a metal outer washer with a rubber inner washer. The rubber does the sealing, while the metal keeps from crushing the rubber. You might be able to get some like those the right size for your brake hoses.

On modern engine designs all the oil flows to the filter then it goes to the engine. Some of these older engines the original designs didn't have a filter. They added a port to the block in an oil passage, ran it to the filter then returns to the oil pan. This is why your engine ran fine with no oil flowing through the filter.
@jerrywesterfield5636 Жыл бұрын
Looks like the truck has a bypass type oil filter. Oil only flows to the filter when the oil pressure is high enough to open the high-pressure bypass valve in the oil pump. The filter is not in the oil flow path to the bearings.

Mix acetone and any cheap atf 50/50. This is about the best penetrating fluid you can get any the cost isn't much. On those severely rusted brakes parts warm the parts up, an electric heat gun works fine on smaller parts, a propane torch on bigger parts. Once good and warm spray the penetrating fluid on the rusty parts. The warm parts sprayed with the fluid will cool quickly, this draws in the fluid into the rusty areas.

The real story is you brought this truck back from the dead and saved it from rotting away. That was amazing it gets a second chance at life and is a great piece of history. The better story would be all of your fans and you coming together and finding everything needed to make that old truck shine again. Every little piece that goes back on that truck would just ad to the miracle and be a great example of what people can accomplish if they all work together. Call me crazy but when I see old things that would have been otherwise lost to time it makes me really happy almost as if that old truck had a soul and feelings as well and you two saved it from the grave. The other thing I like are the memories that you two are making together and sharing with the world, very cool !!!! I hope you take this truck all the way THE DREAM MACHINE :) I will buy a ticket to ride when the old truck is ready. :) But I want to ride in the back like the good old days :)
@KoolFJ402 жыл бұрын
Love the look of this old 1946! However a small suggestion: You need to build an electrolysis tank to derust stuff like the wheel cylinders and master cylinder. It would have made the job of getting the pistons out of the cylinders so much easier. The process breaks the rust bond between parts, but does not remove any good metal. Good luck with the rest of the build!

I just watched your channel for the first time. I've always liked the styling of the K model Cornbinders. When using that wheel hub puller greeze up the threads every time and it will work better and last longer. You were lucky your hubs didn't fight much. I believe that your wheel clearance issue is because the truck came with 16" wheels. The bolt pattern should interchange with some Dodge, Studebaker and Ford. Wheel spacers are never a good idea. No need for all that sillycone. Dished freeze plugs will seal fine if the block is cleaned and the water neck just needs a gasket. I think I would have flushed the rear axle with some kerosene or solvent after seeing all that schmoo come out of it. Do you have a Knox tailgate on your truck? I think they made the beds for IH. Now you need to finder a better truck for your "doner" engine and rebuilt brakes.

Re: the copper washers: they frequently leak when reused because copper work hardens VERY quickly. If you lay the old washers on something like a dry cinder block and heat them to a dull red glow with a propane/mapp/etc torch they will soften up and conform to their new sealing surfaces.
