When I saw the vintage dressing tables I almost shed a tear. My sister was given our grandmother's and she has since given it to our sister in-law. Lots of girls on that side who will appreciate it. I don't think I have seen prettier leaded glass doors and windows like those. How brilliant to add more energy efficient windows instead of tearing the leaded ones out. Great finds. Thanks for sharing.

I'm always surprised how many of the houses you visit have massive cracks in the walls. That's not something we see commonly here in Canada, even in 100+ year old buildings. I'm guessing Australian building standards (specially foundations) are very different from Canadian ones... (we do have to account for the weight of massive snow loads and below ground finished basements are very common here). #1 was a very interesting house! Lovely wood floors. For shame that beautiful art deco furniture couldn't be saved! There is a lot of demand for those on the antique market here. #2 had a very late 70's to early 80's vibe to it. Loved the stone work on #3!

The first floors was in great shape. So I was glad to hear the salvage has started. Noticing in a lot of these homes within this last year. Cracks from your big earthquakes. Did some of these home get condemned? Hope they take those floors. I thought Australia was hot all year. If so why so many hones with fireplaces? Loved the cabinets in the 3 house. Those frosted door was nice. The leaded glass doors was very cool. I do hope they save all those leaded windows and doors. 2 palms on the beach. Bet the last one has nice hard wood floors under all that carpet. Here in the U.S. a bedroom can only be called a bedroom if it has a egress window. A window big enough to climb through if there is a fire or other emergency. Loved those kitchen cabinets in the last house. Not so much the cheap vinyl flooring. I loved what you called the stove cove. Was that brick or wood floors in laundry room hall?

Loved all 3, but the last two were great! The very last was a little doll house you could almost move into and make a few changes. I do think that kitchen was original (though it might not have been painted originally). Countertops might be newer, but those shelves are a dead giveaway for the 40s or 50s! Hi Paul, Happy Easter, and thanks for showing us three properties - what a bonus! Loved the lead light doors and windows. I hope they were salvaged as they are worth quite a lot of money. They sell in Melbourne for around $1,500 to over $2,000 a set at a salvage yard so there was a few thousand worth in the doors and windows alone. I read in one of your replies that the Art Deco bedroom set was smashed rather than sold or even donated to charity. What a shame. These developers have no respect for anything old. I look forward to seeing your next explore in the countryside. Take care and stay safe and well.

Thanks Paul for another interesting explore and filming four unique Art Deco period homes, before being demolished. There is so much variation of character being lost for ever in Adelaide to new developments and is such a pity. The first home seemed to be cracking badly in places and possibly foundation issues. In the second home you explored, there were some really lovely Art Deco furniture worth restoring. The third house you explored seemed to be in reasonable condition, had beautiful led light windows, internal glass doors, with decorative ceiling roses and what appears to have been an extension done around the late 1970s or early 1980s. All four homes ranging form different Art Deco periods and distinctive in styles.

Loved the art deco electric fire in the first house and the leaded glass and etched glass doors in the third. The first and second house did have structural issues, so it is not as bad when they have to be demolished. The extra windows in the third house were secondary glazing and designed to keep out the noise (could hear the constant traffic when you were near the single glazed front door). Interesting to see the fourth house which was built during WW2 and sad that it is going (or gone) as there was nothing wrong with it. You must have been up until the early hours uploading this as it is afternoon in the UK, so thank you! :-)

Great video, as always! I hate that that art deco furniture, especially the bakelight handles, and a couple of the ceiling fixtures are gone. I have a big ask and you might not find time. Would you be able to catalogue some of the greenery outside these places? It is interesting to me, as a gardener, to see how self-sufficient these homes were back in the day: fruit trees, flowers, vegetables. I thought I saw, in house number 2 I think it was, what looked like pretty extensive raised gardens. Anyway, I understand if you run out of time or don't want to linger outside too long. You are definitely the BEST at doing this. No annoying music, methodical progress through the property, taking time to show close ups and explain things like door hardware, appliances, ceiling features, grillwork, stained glass, etc. Brilliant work! So thank you.

Ornamental decorative brick accents on the exterior walls is right out of the Thirties, period homes are so refreshing in the midst of all the crap drywall and plastic today. Here in Mississippi we have a tremendous amount of red clay in the soil that expands when wet and contracts when it dries which will cause house foundations to shift. We get cracks in houses and sometimes even in slab foundations. We very rarely use exterior coverings like stucco for this reason but there are a lot of brick houses with cracks in the walls. What causes those type of cracks where you are? I have heard you mention salt rot. Interesting video, as always.
@urbexindigo51643 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy :-) You just explained the exact problem here in Adelaide as this area is also expansive clay and the major cause for the wall cracking and foundation problems. Building codes were changed in the 60`s to combat the soil problem. Salt damp is when the moisture finds its way up through the stone wall and when it dries the salt is left which erodes walls. Cheers for watching :-)

@Thetis0583 жыл бұрын
I sure hope the developer/s donate that antique furniture to the needy . So sad to see these places being torn down at an alarming rate .I also hope the developer/s have salvage people come in and save the good stuff from these homes . I don’t know why I get so sad when I watch these videos especially the ones where there have obviously had renovations to accommodate elderly couple or single elderly person . After one or both parents pass away children I think either put survivor from couple in home for old people and then pressure parent/s to sell property so they (children ) can get the money . Such a shame . Maybe people in this area need to start putting pressure on city officials to stop the destruction of these homes . Many homeless people could of lived in these homes until the home was really in need of being torn down , however to tear down perfectly good historic homes just to put up gingerbread homes of poor construction is a crime in my eyes . Thank you for sharing and also for documenting these homes for the future generations to see what these neighborhoods looked like pre destruction.

@aidenh25633 жыл бұрын
These houses would have been built with outside toilets that had a metal bucket that was collected and emptied every week. Indoor toilets became popular in the 50s/60s and most old houses had a toilet put in when extensions were built.
