18 St. George’s road Toorak Melbourne Victoria this property did indeed sell for 40million and upon the sale the front of the house was not damaged at all the only things wrong were the fire damage and the black pool. When it was bought the buyer (a man from Hong Kong in the medical field) said that the front of the house would be renovated and restored however the back would be demolished and rebuilt because of the structural damages caused by the fire. It’s very interesting that the front is now completely trashed via a water pipe that was cut?? The reason I feel this is more a case of sabotage to get the approval to knock the whole property down as stated it could be at the start of the video is because this has happened in this street before and there is more money in knocking it down than renovations

It’s so interesting reading up on this place. The Hong Kong investor paid $40 million for it which didn’t come in pristine condition. The pool was dirty and the back quarters already ravaged by fire which was caused by a cleaner dumping hot coals into the bin. On top of the $40mil he also had to pay about $7mil in fees and taxes and apparently has a bill of approx $600k in land taxes a year. Just throwing money away

Probably a corrupt banker's home. Cheaper to tear it down. But oh what that house could do with a little community service. A whole community center. Or even house the homeless veterans. I'm just saying...

People who say it isn’t worth 40 million you obviously don’t live in Melbourne. Property is extremely expensive and depending where the house is located also adds to the price.

Designed in 1920 by architect Christopher Cowper as his own home, the property first sold when Cowper and his wife, Mary secured £15,250 for it in 1925. In approx. May 2017 after being owned for two decades the previous owners sold the 1920s one-acre property "as-is" for $40 million, becoming, at the time, the most expensive property in Toorak - with a further $8.5 million in government fees on top of the purchase price. The home has been vacant since approx Spring 2014 after a fire, caused by a cleaner dropping hot coals into a wheelie bin ultimately destroying the back half of the property. As a result of water to extinguish the fire the home suffered even greater damage, the reason the ceiling has fallen in some areas. Attempting to extinguish a fire it's the water that does irreversible damage. Following a fire, as long as the structure remains sound the finishes can be stripped and replaced. But water gets everywhere, inside the walls and ceilings, and can sit under and on the floors. Damage from a fire can often be seen, damage from water cannot. Even just excess moisture in the air has the potential to cause a property considerable damage. Any delays in resolving moisture ASAP can be disastrous. Once mould begins to grow it is extremely difficult to resolve and can compromise the health of anyone within its vicinity. It is very likely repairs can begin after a fire with no actual understanding of potential problems until its well beyond the ability to properly correct it. Upon purchasing the home the new owner claimed to want to retain the original home and rebuild what the fire destroyed. This property would likely be stripped to the bare walls and everything would then be replaced. The building thought to be a shed looked to also be a photography studio. The black box that appeared to be a clock is a timer, and the long stainless trough-like structure along the wall would have been used to rinse and develop images. Behind that shed is a three-bedroom guest house. The space next to the kitchen with the wall of stainless refrigerators would have been used as a catering kitchen. The room with the red lacquered walls would have been used as an office/library. Furnished the red would not be quite as glaring with books on the shelves as they would obscure a great deal of the colour. Lacquering the walls as they are are is not an inexpensive finish. It's unfortunate that the property has been allowed to essentially rot as is, and though a considerable amount of cash was spend to purchase it there may be benefits to the owner as deductions against their income tax

@leighj9566
@leighj9566 5 жыл бұрын
It’s called land banking. An overseas investor buys the property for the land value, the house is inconsequential. They either develop the site or buy subsequent and adjoining property’s as they come to market to capitalise on blue chip suburb land returns or the ability to develop. There’s a couple of famous examples around the Toorak area in Melbourne. Utter shame.
