I used to live in a house across the street where the Bell Tire now stands. It was my grandfather's house. Encore I believe opened in 1988 or 1989. It was the first large multiscreen cinema in the Michiana area which included Elkhart, Mishawaka, South Bend. We used to keep binoculars on the front windowsill to see what was playing on the sign that used to be on the front of the building. I remember seeing Batman in 1989 there. It was smaller back then I think it only had 8 or 10 screens back then. They added onto it in the early 2000's I think.

This dude literally stopped in my hometown. This theater was the Encore Cinema until a few years back. Then it became an AMC but not much really changed about it. I grew up going to that theater and was by far our best in elkhart. If you wanted a better experience you went to Mishawaka. But this movie theater really just highlights what is going on across the country. Declining attendance, lack of investment. In fact, the AMC in south bend which is still open looks half abandoned. And with the exception of movies 14 in mishawaka, the same fate is happening to every theater in the area. We lost the dollar theater years ago.
@IAmNeomic
@IAmNeomic 5 ай бұрын
As a teenager, I worked at the Mishawaka dollar theater near UP Mall years ago (2006-2007). I was shocked it lasted so many years because there were days I would be there for 8+ hours and never see a single person come in. Literally paid to play the arcade machines, eat free popcorn, sit in the auditoriums and watch whatever was playing (I think I watched Snakes On A Plane like 15 times), or if we got too desperate, toss a nerf football some kid left across the lobby, back and forth while talking about whatever was happening on WWE at the time. Every time I hear John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change" because it was one of the songs that would play between showings when the screens would show movie facts and trivia, and I heard it so much while cleaning. I absolutely hated that job at the time, but looking back, it was so easy. Circling back around though, so much of the upstairs area where the office and projection rooms were, there were three rooms that were abandoned up there with old equipment and leftover junk from the 80s and 90s that had been sitting in there there for like 15-20 years. Speakers, wires, projectors, old damaged film reels, busted arcade machines, special buckets for different movies. You open the door and it was like immediate dust and cobwebs. When it finally closed down 7-8 years ago, I was like "Wow, I can only imagine how much abandoned stuff was crammed upstairs now."

It was, they had a lot of screens. The hallways on both sides had different screens. I watched Batman the dark Knight rises here, final destination 2009 here, I saw the jump Street movies here, I saw resident evil 4 here, my whole childhood movie theater experience was at this very location. Friday nights were usually jammed packed and you always ran into someone you knew there. It was simply amazing. Rip to my childhood spot.

Awesome video!! First figures walking around in the building, possibly related to reflections and shadows on the window, then a mysterious beam of light shining down in the car, possibly from the sunroof letting in a bit of sunlight.... interesting stuff going on in broad daylight in Indiana... haha. Seems like an interesting state... I've seen some videos from Gary, Indiana, with Steel City Storm and Scott On Tape I believe.

That first puddle you saw is their world famous Encore Lake, it never really dries but for a few days unless its a drought. Yes it can get deep, enough to swamp some cars via the bottom door seal. It used to get played in a lot after the movie. Some people would even park dead center of it just for show. It use to be a really nice theater, back in the day I saw the original jurassic park there as a child. As you can tell by the color scheme and layout it was never updated from that era. Eventually AMC purchased it and would not update it or maintain it. The leaks inside are bad. In some theater stalls they didnt even bother to put the drop tile back in, looked like a broken chess board. The last movie I saw there was the ghostbusters afterlife with my children. You could tell even then the theater wasn't going to make it, the decay was to severe. In its hayday, the front lot was always full, the side lot full and depending on the day and time the back lot could be nearly full. The right side of the building is where they had the arcade. All those other doors are just fire exits. I can recall back in the day during high demand, the theaters chaperons would open some up so you may exit out the back and side lots. Only the front was ever the entrance. It was extremely popular in the mid 90s to early-mid 2000's For the breakin you saw it was likely from tweakers that plague the area due to the RV industry and liberal stances on neighboring area. As soon as you close something in that area, they will come and break in and attempt to collect wire and water pipes for scrap and pilfer items they think they can resell for high value on facebook market place. They quickly get arrested, but there is always a fresh crop behind them.

Ok, Rant time!!! I want to start off by saying that all those concession workers who've worked here were so nice and friendly. They always gave me free popcorn whenever I went there to see more than 1 movie. I feel bad for them. This is actually disheartening, but not surprising, that they finally decided to close down the last remaining movie theater in Elkhart. It just wasn't profitable. I believe COVID had a lot to do with its demise as well. The community thought that back when AMC took over Encore, the company would revise the theater, But that turned out not to be the case. All they did was add some mixed drinking fountains. They didn't bother making any repairs at all. In different showing rooms, the ceiling would drip rainwater into trash cans. There were numerous damaged and missing seats. But all in all, I still had a good time here. The very first movie that I saw here was the Nightmare on Elm Street remake back in 2009. I mostly saw Marvel and DC superhero movies, as well as some horror movies here. My mom drove me and my nephew here to see the first Thor movie before she had gotten too sick to drive. The last movie that I saw here was saw, right before the news came that they were going to shut down this theater. There were times when I was the only one in a showroom watching a movie. I pretty much was the only one in the room watching Wolverine 3 and Iron Man 3. I knew things were getting bad when there were just a handful of folks going here to watch movies. This is sad because it's one less option for folks to want to get out of their house. Over the years, we have lost so many places that we used to frequent and make memories from. Such as Root Beer stands, Drive-in movie theaters, VHS rental stores, Toys R Us, Showbiz pizza, Saturday morning cartoons, Malls, arcades, the circus, Ryan's, Denny's Big Boys, Shakey's. And many others. Thank you for posting this. I appreciate the good times that I had here
