Very nice story. I am not sure if you have ever heard of the late "Scottsdale Mall" on the South Side of South Bend back in the late 70's. It was a two story mall, and was really awesome. It took a turn for the worst after the cities industrial area sort of lapsed, and lost a lot of jobs. I do wish that it could have gotten back on it's feet. It would have been one of the last historical two story malls left in the United States.

UP Mall was the place to shop back in the day when I lived in South Bend. It was where I used to take my daughter who was about 10 years old. A lot has changed but I still remember parts of what it was like. I shopped so much at L. S. Ayres. Thanks for doing this video!

I live in Michigan and first shopped in this mall when it was still under construction.The Hudsons was added later, though Simon owns it now, it was a DeBartolo mall when built. This mall had a chick-fil-a that was quite a novelty for the area. This mall also had the first bath and body works I had ever seen (I know, sounds crazy now) The L.S.Ayres was a nice store, that was new for me from Michigan. It ended up killing the older Mall south of town called Scottsdale Mall. That mall had an L.S. Ayres, an Ayr-way (later a target) and Montgomery Ward. My favorite store in that mall was a World Bazaar (I was a wicker freak in the 70's).

As originally built, the "center" of the mall, between where L.S. Ayres and Hudson's used to be, had a large sunken seating area with a stage that was used for various activities.

I’m originally from Granger and the UP Mall used to be farmland owned by the Clery family and was sold to the DeBartolo company and the mall opened in the late 70’s. Used to be a 3 screen theater where the food court is in. Also used to be a bank out in the parking lot where the Tesla charging stations are. Pennys used to have an actual automotive service center as well. Service merchandise was across the street on the other Side of Grape Rd.

University Park Mall didn't even exist when I still lived in South Bend. Grape Road was a two-lane country road, surrounded by farmland as far as the eye could see.

Grew up there and spent a lot of time in that mall. So some of the best movies on those 3 screens, the Back to the Future trilogy specifically.

thank you for sharing I like to see the good with the bad so it's nice to see a mall doing at least ok. I'm in East TN just outside of Knoxville and our biggest mall that's doing well mall West Town is tearing down the old Sears building and putting in a Dick's Sporting goods and possibly a Tesla dealership along with some smaller shops. I've noticed similar in other locations where they replace the old Sears with new construction it does great if they try to sub-divide & or repurpose it usually doesn't work out as well. Love your videos hope you take care and stay healthy.

I worked here two different times in my life - once for Caledo Chili Trader's and once at EB Games. I was a complete mallrat as a teen LOL

Like so many kids in the 80's, the mall was one of thee places to hang out. I spent many a day in the UP Mall growing up in So. Bend....great memories!

I'm from the area I used to go to this mall every weekend and just hang out and shop in Highschool in the 2010s and it's still fun to visit to this day

Where do you get your facts from? When I visited that mall in mid 90's there was the movie theater and the food court. Also Mishawaka is EAST of South Bend. (Not west)

Cool to see your take on the mall. This was a very nice mall when I did this couple months back. I neglected to get candy at that store in the middle. That cookie store was good. I'm noticing that in proportion to Chicago area malls, these smaller city malls are busier.
