I would say by sound you have a bit of a burnt exhaust valve. Roll from cylinder to cylinder add air through injection holes and you’ll find it coming though the exhaust.

It does sound better. That looks like a Roosa Master injection pump. I've seen a number of these that have kind of random poor running issues due to the flexible coupling on the fly weight basket for the governor inside the pump failing. It's a very common problem. There is an updated 1 piece coupling that eliminates the issue for good. You seem pretty handy, so you might tackle the job yourself. An injection shop can get you the parts.

The return line at the pump has an elbow fitting on it if you remove the fitting there is a glass check ball that is spring loaded the underneath of it can get gummed up especially on a machine that has sat for a long time. It stops the extra fuel from being able to return to the tank which causes over fueling. Take some carb cleaner to it and get it cleaned out where the glass ball will freely bounce up and down then put the line back on and see if that doesn't help it smooth out. I hope this helps ya man.

I do have a field fix tip for you: get some cardboard,a piece about 2' x 2', and put on the ground when you're working on something with small parts that the ground will eat or at least hide very well from you. Saves a lot of time looking for that dang nut that fell "right freaking there".....If working on a concrete slab I put an old towel down for the same reason: had nuts roll away at least several feet then on my hands and knees looking for that odd-ball metric blankety,blank,blank nut.

For what you paid for it I think it's a great piece of kit, I don't think many things are faultless and sometimes we don't get it fixed properly or cheap parts are not as good as they should be or faulty from new? There are all sorts of possibilities when we take on Challenges like this and you always have to default back to it was cheap and someone else did not feel it was worth spending the time or money on. But for me, I enjoy the challenge immensely especially when you're doing all the work for me to enjoy? LOL Thanks for taking the time to make the videos as they are helpful, But always remember each piece you fix is one less that you have to deal with, and from where I sit you have done an amazing job. It is good to know if you are having ongoing issues with the brakes and that is strange that the problem followed you from one side to the other. Cheers From Garry in Australia

For the price of some Knock'R'Loose, a few minutes with the spanners and a new gasket (or set of gaskets? Do you have a point-n-shoot thermometer to check the exhaust runners for a cylinder running cooler than the rest? You can also use cheap white paint on the cold runners and watch if the paint cooks and discolors evenly as it warms up. Soapy water works too for checking from cold start and idle while paint is better as the motor reaches working temp. It's easier to WATCH all cylinders for change than doing the hand dance.

It seems to be a random skip or misfire. I had a Chevy with a worn bushing in the distributor that did this. I replaced the bushing in the distributor and it ran very nicely after that. I wonder if the injector pump has a worn part that is giving bad timing to the engine. I'd pull the injector pump and check the gears driving it for play, check the gear on the end of the injector spindle for play. If something is loose inside the injector you might be able to replace it or at least tighten it up. Otherwise it seems not to be smoking which indicates that the injectors are working OK.

Run better? a bit. Old equipment can become an endless repair. Question to ask is does it run and work as expected without destroying itself.Bought,repaired,sold or kept 20+ farm tractors,5 dozers,crawler loader,4 backhoes... If they function as they should,run in normal coolant range,have good oil pressure,little to no blow-by and are safe to use I call them good to go.On yours you could pull the head and send to a machine shop,do an in-frame,replace all injectors,re-build the injection pump. Might as well pull the radiator and have it cleaned,install a new water pump the t-stat too. Or call it good and go dig stumps etc and deal with a slight intermittent miss.....

Mike, it still has a skip to it and like a person mentioned, check for even heat on cylinders as a piece of carbon or what ever could be the problem. You say it set for a while and its likely that you need a valve grind to fix it right but then where do you stop at. It may come out by running a while or finally just get worse and then you can find and fix. I don't know if that has the baby cummins in it or what but if it is then taking heads off and grinding valves is a full days work if everything is in your favor. Right now with winter knocking on the door so spring has its blessings unless you have a place out of the mud and muck... good luck as I hear frustration in your voice. Normally and I know that you have worked on steering, it ain't hard to solve the issues but without being there I am just a arm chair jerk

Adjusting valves has to be done methodically. Learn the procedure and do it right. Half-assed gets you no ass. If you don't do it right it will make you think you have problems all over the place. Great videos but you have to be cleaner when messing with hydraulics. They can be very unforgiving.
@mikekisch5563 Жыл бұрын
the idea was one cylinder wasnt contributing to the engine and i could hear a miss, the adjustment is more or less to verify all the valves are opening and closing as they should. i was really hoping for a obvious problem that i could fix and make the engine run like it shoould. i couldnt really tell if it ran any better, but i know it never fixed the problem, i am about 90 percent sure one cylinder wasnt delveloping enough compression. also mechanically speaking the cam should be round with a lobe on it, so checking the valves at any point along the rounded part should give a good indication of clearance. that was the procedure to check the valve at the round on the cam.

Boy, i sure do cuss a lot more than you when im working on my old 580ck. Thats an odd one on how its running. The audio does sound like a miss. Damn near impossible its a burnt/broke valve/seat because atomized, unburned fuel would be coming out of the stack in a white cloud. Also the nozzles (those arent injectors- technically) when they go bad, USUALLY dump fuel in the cylinder and itll black smoke like a bastard. I wonder if youre pulling air on the suction side. Or possibly a nozzle is seized shut...rare but it happens..ive seen it . As far as injection pump timing being out, that wouldnt cause just one cylinder to miss. They'd all be off. And for the timing to be "out" it would mean really bad tooth wear on the gears....nah. You can look for air in the fuel system by placing a hunk of clear hose/tubing on the return line. You can return the fuel in a bucket id easier than going "inline" with the return. If you see a crap load of bubbles in the line obviously youre pulling air. Ive been cussing at diesel engines professionally for too long to care much anymore, but just trying to help. Good luck buddy. Cool videos!
