I worked at Bemberg from 1971-1974 as a chemical operator in the solution room of the Chemical Department. The rayon manufactured there was known as cupra-ammonium rayon. From the second floor of the chemical building, wood pulp and copper were emptied down into tanks on the first floor and dissolved with caustic soda. After blending in the first row tanks, the solution was moved by air pressure through screen presses into a second row of tanks where further blending took place and an addition of tartaric acid/water was added. Then the solution was moved by air pressure to vacuum tanks and after a vacuum was achieved for 10 hours, it was moved to a larger holding tank and from there to a fourth row of tanks called spinning tanks and held until need by the spinning operation, transferred by air pressure to the spinning room. In the spinning room, the solution was introduced to acid through a spinnerette and a thread formed, thus cupra-ammonium rayon. The solution was dark blue in color. The rayon process at North American Rayon was a viscose rayon.

My uncle and Grandfather worked there before and during WW2. I think they stopped producing anything when I was a little kid, but I do remember the entire plant still there. Now, it's the site of a WalMart. The North American Rayon mill next door kept in operation until the 90, but it's gone, too. They had one of the very last steam locomotives in commercial use, which stopped running around 1990

Same , I don’t live in carter county but I do live close enough to pass it often and for the past 3 years have been researching , asking questions and stuff of that type about it and it’s history , today yet again I was over there and found another way in I believe . But am not sure did not get close enough . But I also got very helpful information from business owners near the plant about one guy who I did talk to last year about it , he owns storage buildings near the factory and will try to prosecute you if you are caught by the police or him on his part of that property , but the same people who told me that told me about other ways to get in that aren’t through his part of it . Am unsure if that guy actually own the run down factory tho

Part of the Bemburg building was used for storage by Hilltop Honda Acura junkyard. It's the boneyard now, but I cataloged alot of motors ,trans, wheels , and other various Honda parts. It's in the tall part of the building or was. Not sure if it all was moved or destroyed.

They said the owner is not here but is a real jerk and would not allow it. They said the owner keeps dogs inside the building. They let me around the building for 10 min to take some photos. To be precise it was a silk made with cotton “linters” (cotton wool), so it’s partially artificial. Looked liked silk. Then they started to produce yarn for tights. Also the American one produced cloth for parachutes: as the main company did so, also the other branches had to do the same. tennesseeencyclopedia.net/entries/north-american-rayon-corporation-and-american-bemberg-corporation/

It's a old rayon plant they made materials similar to Silk is artificial thus the name rayon. As a child I thought it was fascinating that my grandpa worked at a plant that made material to go in rocket ships I remember going to a festival in Elizabethton I don't remember all the details but I was proud of my grandpa and I remember seeing Rockets all over everything he brought home material and I think we still have some of it and storage to use them for washing dishs and rags. Interesting bit of history about both Bemberg and N.A.R.C. During WWII, the gov't took over the plants to produce parachute material. The Tweetsie locomotives brought workers down out of the mountains from as far away as Cranberry, NC to contribute to the war effort. The Bemberg "Station" still stands on the other side of Elk Avenue. Check out this video for more information; although, it is primarily about the Tweetsie RR operations during WWII: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIXCdaGOlNefZ80

The made rayon or artificial silk for years . If you decide to tour the old Leon Fernbach plant in JohnsonCity, let me know, they made similar stuff, been shut down for years too. But my grandparents worked there on my fathers side, my mother worked there til they shut the doors and I worked there as well. But you had to string different types of threads together to make one large spoil of thread. Pantyhose , rope, different things this was used to make. Very hard work. But NARC smelled horrible in Elizabethton, it smelled like Rotten Eggs and embalming fluid mixed . Hope that is some answers you was looking for….

It's North American Rayon, not Raytheon. Both North American Rayon and American Bemberg were owned by Beaunit Corp, which was bought by El Paso Natural Gas. Bemberg Rayon was made using copper sulfate and ammonia. North American Rayon made rayon using cellulose. Bemberg rayon became too expensive, and, ultimately, so did NARCO rayon. A few small businesses use the main building as storage. There are not, and never have been "guard dogs" in use on the property. There Are, however, multiple packs of stray dogs that live there (and all over Eliz.) that animal control can't/ won't do anything about; especially now that the animal shelter is a "no kill" facility.

Me and my best friend this exact year. Made a video exploring the place. And when we entered we had a bad feeling about being there and like it felt like we walked into hell honestly. It wasnt hot or anything it was pretty Nippy. But it felt like something was with us the entire time. And throughout the video. We got to the Lot with a lot of beat up cars and junk metal and we heard the dog barking it sounded old. It was tied up. But we kept exploring and we went into the building you did the intro in at the beginning we went in. And as soon as the camera turned left on our video there was a black figure lurking the door way. Stories have been told of people seeing humans jumping out of the windows and when they checked to see the persons body. Nothing was there. Supposedly there was a suicide from the top floor. To this day the place still stands.

you should have went in. one dog cant even walk now. the other one just barks a lot. if you went in then, maybe you could have saved that dog. honestly you heard barking and ran. no way you were chased by dogs then. they couldnt even get out of the building.
