I googled some of the things in the video and found Corporal Raymond Tackett. He was killed in combat in North Korea in the battle of heartbreak ridge. He had a Purple Heart commendation. It states he is buried in Old Town cemetery. What I found was pretty interesting. There also was photos of him. Nice looking guy.

I was born in Paintsville. My niece and I used to go Cemetery Hunting as we did our Genealogy research. The older ones held the most interest for us. She has since passed and I am too old to do it now but we enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to see your video. Keep up the good work.

Wow this is so sad that it has turned into a lost and forgotten resting place... you need to be careful you don't step in a sink hole!!!!! Especially being on a hillside like that you had me holding my breath 😳😊... once again though it was beautiful. I say shame on that town for not taking care of it and taking pride in the history of the people before them.... there is no excuse for that!!! Thank you for another great video appreciate all you do, hope you have a good rest of your weekend 🙏❤️🍻please stay safe and healthy!

You find lost cemeteries for the same reason I LOVE to work on genealogy. I especially love finding a memorial that has no information on the person's family, and bringing the family together, if only in records.

I am from Illinois My dad was born in Pineville his dad was a coal miner so I visited there 3 yrs ago to do some researching and found my great grandparents cemetery way up in the weeded hill buried in the woods. Luckily a lady I met while there took me up on that hill and she takes care of the little cemetery. No relation but she still takes care of it by weeding it and taking out the debris, I am hoping to get back down there and do some more researching. I was mainly looking for my grandmothers side and lo and behold I met some relation by just riding around and talking to people while visiting the cemeteries. . Thank you for sharing your video so much appreciated . Hopefully someone may recognize a name on one of the markers they may be related to.

My father passed away in April 2023. He was born in Kentucky like most of my Marshall side of family. He wanted to be laid to rest in Martin Kentucky next to his grandmother it took alot to get it done because it became private property but the small town of Martin helped and we were able to fulfill his wishes. But it was a chore to get to. But god bless you dad your'e at peace. Forever love to you❤❤❤

Anytime I see something about Paintsville Kentucky I'll watch because I'm from Johnson county and my first job was digging graves with Alvis Kestner for Jones and Preston funeral home !!! I have worked with Mike Preston as well, worked with Bill Phelps when he was still at Jones and Preston !! My Aunt Barb and Uncle Charlie Arms lived up on the south side. I remember going Southside Freewill Baptist church with Pastor Eddie Young ! We lived up Asa creek !! Thank you for educational video from home, I've been gone almost 40 years now, I come home Easter and Thanksgiving and the occasional funerals of family !

There are small family cemeteries all over the hills of eastern KY. They are private cemeteries that the family maintains until there is no one left able or willing to take care of them. If they were public cemeteries, the town or county would probably maintain them, but these small cemeteries are everywhere. My aunt had several family members buried in her backyard, even though we had a family cemetery as well.

Gratitude. Lot of times old churches had land they buried thier pastors and church members on. They get over grown when famlies die or or move away. It is sad to be forgotten. Lot time if the cemetery is old History Society take over clean it up and put the names on register and keep a record That's one reason I try to make sure my mothers family cemetery is kept clean. More and more I see houses being builed.though family members are still being buried there. It's still mean a lot to me. My oldest brother has a bussiness that cut trees and clean properties. He even go to parts of Florida and do work there. Though my mother is not buried in the family cemetery, her mother, my maternal grandmother is. She in a vault as well has has a marker. Again thank you for showing us this. You right about snakes. Becareful take care. What you do is very much apperciated. As you say, they were people too.👍💯💜🙏🙏🌷🌻🦋🌠✨🙂👋. Neita james.

Interesting Chris! You always have great videos. It is sad that there are so many forgotten graves in Kentucky. I myself know of 2 graveyards in Bath County. Very respectful. I’d like if you could focus a bit longer on each stone, so we could take in not just the names, but the dates. In my town, there’s a group called “friends of abandoned cemeteries” that get together every so often to pull weeds, tend to the grounds & keep peoples gravesite’s presentable. I’d never realized what a noble cause that is.

In my area (CT) most cemeteries are run by associations, the associations are made up of the plot owners. What happens when all the plots are sold and there is no longer any steady income, is that they run out of money to care for the cemetery. That is happening at the cemetery I help with. In CT if the the cemetery is turned over to the town, they can deem it an historical site and not perform any more burials.

I kept wondering why there isn't a Paintsville Cemetery Society that does upkeep. Every person buried there deserves the same respect as the founder. They were all a part of the history of the area. Soon, their headstones will be gobbled up by the plants and people won't even be aware of them. It is such a shame that this has been let go so badly.

The first grave in your video is that of John and Minta Litteral my great grandparents. I usually clear their grave once a year but due to illnesses in the family, it has not been done this year. The yucca plant in front of the done was not there last year and was planted too close to the stone. Jess Tackett is my grandfather, he died from TB at 44. Raymond Tackett is my uncle and I bear his name. He knew before he died that I was named in his honor. He was killed in the last day of the battle of Heart Break Ridge. This area remains in the hands of South Korea today. Note that he died 10 months after his father had died. Another grave shown is my grand mother Maude Litteral Tackett. Mother of Raymond, wife of Jess. As with many families from these hills, including myself, we are scattered around the country. All these graves are not abandoned The headstones are cleaned every year and weeds pulled and flowers laid. The area is not very accessible and the ground is not fertile. I have sowed grass several times with little success. My mother passed in April and was the last survivor of this intermediate family of 10.

I would have thought the last internment was many, many decades ago. But Maude Tackett was buried in 1990. One would assume the cemetery was in good condition then. It is amazing how fast it became overgrown and how large the trees are.

Do you ever go around Northern Ky? There’s a lot of old cemeteries that are still active in Lewis, Mason, Robertson, Bracken, and Nicholas Counties. There’s also lots of little cemeteries scattered about on county roads that some have been neglected for years.

Hi I came across your video and started watching it . A Guy I know who does videos to his name is Donnie Laws he does cemetery too . I watched one of his videos where he stayed that him and his wife use shaving cream on the tombstones that you can't read it will bring the name and date out for you to see better I think they use a brush too on it . I hope that helps shame people just don't take care of the Graves even if they don't know the people in the Graves

Not sure what this means, but you did notice that a lot of the graves were that of clergymen. I find it interesting the founder of the town was also a member of the clergy. I'm sure there is a connection. Exactly what that means for the town, or this cemetary I'm not sure, except for the speculation by another commentator that this was a church cemetary. Clearly, if it is, the church was probably there from the first day of the town.
