For everyone saying the food should have been donated, I agree, but I’m guessing it was closed due to bankruptcy and they might have lost control to the building. I’ve seen other businesses, most recently a clinic, where they are behind on rent or payments and the doors are locked by the bank or landlord

This may sound like I'm really dumb, but I have a reason for asking. Does Gary have "Really Big" problem with homeless sleeping on the streets? I was thinking about this. There are so many empty houses and buildings (I do know they aren't all safe) but at least some of the safer ones could keep people out of the freezing cold and the harsh elements in the cold winters of NW Indiana. Am I way off here? Just thinking?? Things are so different and seems backwards to me.😖 People would be living in a building like that in the nearby large cities by us!

@@MidwestFlesh Well, that could be good news, I guess. There have been people living in storage sheds in the winter close by us. South Bend, Indiana (not too far from us, 25 miles away maybe?) has an absolutely WONDERFUL Homeless Shelter. Pretty Awesome for a homeless shelter. Always a waiting list for "guests". They are treated with respect. It is really pretty awesome. They are always full but in the bitter cold, with frigid unsafe winter that a person couldn't survive in, they don't turn people away for the night. But there are other places to go, too

When I lived there, the building on the SouthEast corner of Ridge Road and Virginia Street was a grocery store called National (Tea) Foods Grocery Store. I know this isn't the same store, but it reminds me of it a little bit, except this one you are in is more modern...lol... Where I live now is in a rural area. If there is a grocery store in a town near here that has, let's say, "day old" bread, even non-expired canned goods etc... they donate it to local food pantries around here. Especially if a grocery store, like that one you are in that some of the food was still good (many things ~you can read dates on all foods now~ can last for a long time), everything still edible would be donated before shutting it down. They wouldn't leave food in an empty grocery store. I was wondering if Gary had food pantries or they don't need those? We do have some homeless people in a city nearby. And we have a food pantry just a mile or so down the road from us on the highway. I remember reading through so many comments on The Steel City Storm Channel (Sorry Midwest😮 I know this is your Channel, but hey, we are all working together, right!) during the last year, I can't remember which video it was in, but someone said old National (Tea) Foods Grocery Store had not been a grocery store for a long time. I'm pretty sure it is empty now, but did it at one time become something like a community building? That is where we always did our grocery shopping the whole time we lived in Gary... only 2 or 3 blocks from our home, pretty convenient. It's about 8+ miles now, to go to a Good Sized grocery store! It's a shame they had to close down the grocery store you are in.😥

Filed Bankruptcy in 2017. I am sure that's why all the stock and equipment were left. The bank would have locked it up. I worked for a retail store and I did ask the Mgr. why things were destroyed or thrown out, " because the associates would start destroying merch. or opening packages of food, so they could get it for free." That was company policy in the 80's, smh.

lake station indiana on central, it’s all boarded up and locked up now, there’s cameras around the building but i’m not sure if they’re active, there’s one access point but you have to climb up to the second story in the back

It would have depends upon the temperature of the place how hot it got or how cold it got I wouldn't trust it but all the non edible things could have probably been used toilet paper for one thing cleaning supplies or anything like that I surprised it hadn't been stripped for the scrap metal

Shout out to the Key Market.... too bad it went under. Hopefully they'll finally tear the building down. The place is so damn old... it's in such a prime spot. It could be something great with the highway right there.. Just sad man.
