Abandoned- Classic waterfall style home and Huge late 50`s home

Hey house lovers and explorers!
Today we take a look through 2 very distinct but very different styles of the 50`s.
The first is a classic waterfall art deco style home at the beach and the second is a massive 1959 built home in the foothills.

I love midcentury and art deco homes, both are my favorite styles of all times. Sad that they tore down two beautiful classic midcentury and art deco homes just to replace with boring homes. Both have so much more character than homes built now days. People think they can copy these old styles, but it just simply doesn't happen. Great video!

I don't think that 1st house was worth saving. The lot/traffic is a huge no. The 2nd one ...yes, it has a great lot and the house seemed in good condition overall. I'm puzzled over using the term 'art deco' for either one of these homes.

@@poorthing A waterfall style is considered and came about during the big "art deco" time frame and has always been considered art deco and the waterfall style is basically considered an offset of that movement. At least that is what I've read for years. I think art deco, midcentury and other styles during that time frame all just seem to have some of the same characteristic of each other. I find it sad that so many of these styles slowly faded away to more ranch and basic homes over time. From everything I've seen, there seems to be more waterfall style homes in Australia that in other places. There are house that are close to this design, most were built by Frank Lloyd Wright many years after this style was popular. The empire state building is considered art deco too, thus the reason so many different styles are considered art deco.

I was going to comment just the same thing. I am obsessed with the first house. It’s heartbreaking that it’s set to be demolished. All of the unique features and details, the original beauty, it’s so lovely. I don’t know how somebody didn’t step in to save that wonderful house. I would have loved to have gone in to salvage some is the original bits such as the vents, the light fixtures, so much beauty to that home. ❤

Too bad that house is being torn down, although the inner layout is a little funky, a few changes could make it a lot less closed in. Knock a few walls out give it a more open plan.

That close to the beach,the '2nd' bathrm was probably an outdoor shower so as to not track in sand from the beach. Beautiful style.

I loved the second home so much. Those huge windows stole my heart. I appreciated the real estate photos showing how beautiful this home once was. Some family must have really loved their home! I would love to find the (I forget what they're called at the moment... 2 strokes left me with damage in 2 places on the left frontal, please bear with me?) floorplan is the only word I can think of but it's the other plans..LOL. Stunning wood floors! It's a shame folks just let go of something that could have been such a beautiful place to live. They just let it go to waste.Woo.. a round bed in that bedroom! Small room might have been a study. Those vents though! A glass pocket door! Wow! Maybe the original kitchen was where you entered the home. It has those giant cabinets I wonder if they made that change for a larger kitchen. Those homes back then then tended to have smallish kitchens, my mother's home mid 60's build was small kitchen. I saw planters built into the wall, that's genius for growing herbs! I love this, thank you!

the second bathroom, outdoors, in the First House was used after going to the beach. It was a place to rinse off sand and sea water without bring it into the house, that's why there is a utility sink instead of a vanity sink

With the cost of living and housing crisis, you would think some company or charity could fix these up for families struggling. Such beautiful homes. I always cry watching these vids. So many of us would cherish these homes. But I've also seen first hand ill health and elderly, families that abandon people, and they can't keep up maintenance of such beautiful homes.

Sadly, due to mold or infrastructure issues/get up to code, etc... it would cost far too much to make them liveable and get your money back. It would only be if someone had the money and loved it enough to do it, but people with that kind of money can usually find something in better shape/bigger/etc

Neighborhoods change, too, from decent to crime infested or commercially developed so that no one would want to live there anymore. The traffic on the street at the first house is horrendous.

The Art Deco home is adorable. I admit I have a soft spot for curved walls and windows. The living room is lovely with the curved bay. The real show stopper for me was the vent cover. It has wee birds! Be still my heart. The second home has such a wonderful front garden. I used to not appreciate Mid Century homes but I have a great fondness for them now and this one is a gem. I love that they left the kitchen unrenovated. I just cry when I see an old home with a brand new kitchen. Then there is the bathroom. Wow. Sad to see the ugly things going in, in it's place. @@JamieM470 my grandma lived in a brick house with a basement that was built in 1961 on a road with other houses from the same time. I would always imagine what the insides of the other homes on the street might look like, as they likely all have different designs to suit either a bigger front room, bigger kitchen, or more or bigger bedrooms. But alas the EXACT same homes in that neighborhood are being sold for so much more money now that no one can afford to buy them, even despite the homes being decades older now and crime and development in the area having gone up exponentially. The saddest thing for me is that I looked on a map for homes that might be for sale in that area (which by the way are being sold for $400-$500k when my grandparents got theirs NEW for $24k in 1961), but all of the ones for sale on the map the insides are all "updated" with black or stainless steel appliances, newish looking cabinets and doors, and walls painted gray which I hate 😥 Pretty much all of the 50s style seemed to be gone from them all, including even the most basic of things. That broke my heart because I knew that whoever came into posession of those homes had only done things to make them look more modern so that they could try to justify charging $500k for a house that sold for $24k when it was BRAND NEW. But I love the classic old look of homes that were built during that time, and I would love even more the fact that such a house would likely need to be far less expensive if it had not been updated. But it seems these days that all anyone cares about is money, and it means they are perfectly willing to destroy a vintage house if they think they can sell the house four more money than they would by leaving it the way it is. Which is just sad 😞

@@wrestlerx8494 I agree, it's very sad. Real estate experts say that young people buying homes want everything primer-white (including beautiful woodwork) and modern. So that's why re-sellers "update" everything (and destroy the character). Even worse, thousands of unique & special older homes are being bought by corporations all over the country...they just demolish them & build hideously ugly apartments or neighborhoods of cheaply-built houses that are so identical the only way you can tell them apart is the address numbers. Makes my stomach hurt. I would love to own a vintage home with actual craftsmanship & unique little touches like bird vent covers.

I can’t help but think about a women lovingly planting and caring for that yard. Having dinner ready as the husband comes through the door……… this is my childhood. Mom’s didn’t work, dinner was all made the old fashion way, no mixes, no shortcuts. Moms wore dresses, dads in suits, and before dinner cocktails……..kids were washed, and off to bed early. 🌟Lovely classic homes soon to be gone forever ♾ the paint colour on the exterior of the first home is textured paint they add baking soda to give it the textured look. Could you only imagine at Christmas time stockings hung on the mantle big beautiful magnificent Christmas tree in front of those that window plenty of decorations to take up that whole big beautiful window and honestly I wouldn't do a whole lot to it if I had it make sure the electrical and plumbing is fine redo the floors and the doorways of course paint the walls there's things that I wouldn't remove I love those kitchen cabinets I'm not a fan of blue paint but you can always send them and repaint them another color but I love the way they are

I actually shed a few tears while watching this video. The smashed blue sink did it for me. It was a visceral reaction that I had. My, how beautiful that house must have been! Seeing pictures of it in better times was wonderful but I wonder what it would have looked like in person in its glory. I wonder what it's selling for now? I liked the look of the outside of the waterfall home, but I loved the 50’s house with all the windows and the large rooms. Nice brick on the exterior too. While I love all those huge windows, I’m afraid I wouldn’t feel safe since they do provide easy access to the house for burglars. Thanks for the tours!

2nd house Was that Star of David etched on the pocket door glass panel? Star of David aka Hebrew Star, or Magen David (Shield of David) 2 triangles set on top to form 6 sided star, a hexagram. This was a spacious home, beautiful lot, Large windows. Wonderful to see the 'new' photos, the kitchen drapes are still there! I'd loved to have lived there. Beautiful

These houses are younger than mine but omg, that 1st one! I'm in love with so much of it. The 2nd I really liked the blue in the kitchen and bathroom, the wood floor, and that backyard..multi level. Wow!!! What a shame to tear them down. 😢

What a amazing old home, I’d love to live in that. My parents had the same coating on the their old farm house. It is sprayed on over the walls. And that was done in the late 70’s that spray rendering was done.

Both homes are fabulous but i really like the first one for its style, wonderful woods and feeling of a home. I also like the second one but for completely different reasons. The space and the windows, the amazing yard plants and the kitchen cupboards. The pain colors that remain, the style of the doors. All in all a wonderful showing of fantastic old homes, thank you.

What a shame they are going to demolish such beautiful homes. The flooring on the first home was absolutely amazing the kitchen was beautiful and I love the doorknobs I'm surprised people don't come in and take the door knobs and like the vent covers you can't find anything or buy anything like that the wood floors were beautiful too why doesn't somebody remove the wood flooring

2 stunning homes - I actually cannot make up my mind which one I like best 😊 The art deco home with its beautiful curved bay windows and solid parquet floors is very typical of 'ribbon' developments built here in the UK in the 1920s - there is a one such ribbon estate in my parents home town just down the road from me and these homes are very sought after. They are rarely on the market for long and change hands for serious money - especially if the original parquet floors and other features are still present. First home had a lot to offer & was clearly a purpose-deigned villa style. very period. The second had the hard to achieve feel of space and light. Back when they didnt crowd you into a shoebox.Used the elevations well,you see that technique in the Hollywood hills. Makes me envious of the old owner to have a retreat like that from the world. My parents bought there first home in 1951 in Northern Virginia, New built 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, 900 sq ft. Those small room were normal for middle class houses. I moved to Florida in 1970 and rember that a lot of houses still didn't have air-conditioning, we are very spoiled.
