Kerestinec Castle, it’s beautiful appearance and location distracts from a truly horrific past…
This fortified structure surrounded by a wide moat was originally built for a Hungarian count in 1575, it housed a number of rulers over the years and also served as a meeting point for the Croatian parliament.
It wasn’t until 1947 that a dark history began being written within the walls of this castle…
It was seized by the Ustashe regime, a terrorist organisation heavily influenced by nazism and fascism.
The castle was turned into a concentration camp, approximately 900 prisoners were submitted within its short period of operation, their genocides against serbs and jews were expressions of Nazi racial ideology.
After a prison break, the camp was promptly closed down and any remaining prisoners were sent to nearby Jasenovac, where around 100,000 victims were killed and has been described as ‘more brutal than a auschwitz’.
The regime continued to use the castle as a training camp for some time after.
In 1991, the castle again became a place of incarceration and torture, the Croatian Army used it as a detention centre during the Croatian War Of Independence.
The commander and guards were later put on trial in 2012 for war crimes after using physical and psychological torture against the prisoners.
Some years down the line, the castle stands empty and abandoned. Roofs have been repaired, the overgrowth cleared and in recent years a number of events have been held in the central courtyard, the future may hold something more for this place, although the devastating history can never be forgotten…

When you consider the age of this building, the horrific things that happen were a small portion of it's history. Not to ignore what happened in the last century but there is so much more to this place. It be interesting to know what it was like in its original form. Also it is good that they have festivals there. Positive energy helps dissipate the dark energy that may linger.

Fascinating explore of a bit of history I knew nothing about. The festival stuff almost masks the horrors of what has gone before in this place. It obviously has it's ghosts, you can't treat humans that badly without some residue remaining, even if it is just sparked in our imaginations, it has to come from somewhere.

I think history never should be forgotten equal how cruel it was. There could be developmenting a more kindness behavior if you allowed to bring the bad happenings to speech and thoughtness so to change it to better and kindness behaviour.

I love the places, you've found there in Croatia! Such an awesome historic building, and nice archetecture and details with some of those windows and ceilings and so on. Just very sad, what must have been going on there. It's hard to imagine in such a castle-like building. And then seeing the festival decorations, and to think, people might have happily celebrated in a place with such a terrible past... It would be great, if that building was saved and perhaps made into a museum. Something which shows its entire history (good and bad) in a respectful manner. It would be sad, if it stood abandoned forever, as it seems, the structure is still pretty intact. Thanks for posting! Looking forward to your next adventures! Take care! ♥

4:47 Note, this is a 16th century castle, not 15th, apparently completed in 1575. 7:10 That towering figure is not what you want to see when you turn a corner into a dark corridor! 20:00 That mural is interesting, must be an uprising of some sort, but what? Maybe the Peasants Revolt of 1573? Seems very likely. 20:44 Yes, that crude army guy picture is presumably from the 90s as he appears to have an AK-47. Some great views from the turret windows and a good shot of the light coming through the window showing the outline of the windows being thrown against the ceiling. Very atmospheric!

I really have so enjoyed the films you have made in Croatia and here is another one. An amazing place with such a dark history. We can’t hide from the history, nor should we because we have to understand just how awful it all was and why we don’t want to keep repeating it, but i would love to have seen it in use just as a home or in more peaceful times. The mural was quite something and the views amazing. I don’t know how you completed your filming in the dark after you had joined Karl in his haunted video… brave indeed 👻. Watching this again. I was beat the last time and kept dozing. Because of being tired not due to content. Your explores I have always found fascinating. It's kind of awesome, even though a small detail. But the windows on the perimeter walls certainly show how thick the walls are, and I'm sure they're even thicker in other places. So when you say the place is fortified, you're not just whistling Dixie.

I love that you stuck with the history and the architecture, not dwelling on the misery. Of course I had to look up the history, I can't leave well enough alone. There was a terrible tragedy that happened to children in the area in the early years of ww2 and again in the 1990's. People break my heart ,there's no way I can call them human. " if you want to bring down a nation, first kill their children" anonymous quote. If there is a christian god then he's got a lot of explaining to do. While the architecture was fabulous - especially the ceilings and the cement stair cases- I was disappointed that there wasn’t more to see. The fact that it was once a concentration camp and that it also held prisoners of war who were tortured more recently was creepy. Even though the place is a historical one, it has an evil black history and should be demolished and the land blessed. There must be a lot of lost spirits or souls that are trapped there. Thanks for the tour guys, glad you made it out in one piece.

Such a beautiful but sad building. What amazing architecture you have found on your Croatian journey though. A channel you may like because of your love/knowledge of geology etc is Lost Mines. A young man in the Aberystwyth and surrounding areas in Wales, finds and explores all the old mines. He has found some amazing things too.
