Your work is grand! Back in 2014, my Son and his, long time, buddies decided to produce a documentary, for fun, including original music. All were twenty-somethings. Look at "Following the Golden Arrow" which follows the exact footsteps (8th Infantry Division) his Grandfather followed in WWII. The Cinema Center premier was a sell out. You can see the trailer on KZbin. Keep up your fabulous work! It's so enjoyable!

While serving with the 2d Armored Cavalry in the mid-80's, our main mission was patrolling the inner German and Czechoslovakian borders. I walked thru many off the beaten forest paths. Remember checking out more than a few bunkers and such. They too were marked with graffiti and littered with beer bottles and cigarette butts. Enjoying the channel.

These are very interesting video’s! Mother Nature has reclaimed so much, but enough remnants remain to allow the imagination to flow. I read several of the comments and can relate…my father was a flight engineer on a B17 bomber, and I too am very proud of his service though I shutter to think what it was like to be on the receiving end! War is so terrible and one would think man would have learned this by now, and yet here we are. My father didn’t talk about his missions much, and if he did it usually ended with emotions. At age 62, I feel like the older I get, the more I have in common with him and wish I could have conversations I was too busy and too immature to have when he was alive. I have myself flown in a B17, and got to stand at the top turret station he would have manned during combat. That same B17 I flew in was tragically loss a few months back by a midair collision during an air show. The crew my father trained with in the states was killed during a mission while he was in a hospital recovering from a wound. I understand how a young, strong, confident man can be forever changed emotionally by life experiences…especially those lived through the horrors of war.

Great video. I would like to point out that this video and it's content serves the name of this KZbin channel proudly. I know that some of the viewers of this channel question what does "The History Underground" mean exactly. Well, it mean's this video in particular, which I think is very defining. I get so excited when these new videos on WW2 and it's history get uploaded. Where else are you going to get a guerilla in the trenches styled video format like this? No where. Just a few days ago, this channel in association with the Gettysburg Museum of History actual took looted Nazi memorabilia back to it's origins from the museums collection. This channel is very very cool due to it's unique approach, hosting and commentary on telling these lost stories. I never knew any of this existed, but I am glad I now do as it helps to broaden my interest and understanding on WW2.

Thanks for another great series. I don't know what your plans are, but maybe consider to visit the Wewelsburg (near where I live). Wewelsburg is a Renaissance castle located in the village of Wewelsburg, in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. After 1934 it was used by the SS under Heinrich Himmler, and was to be expanded into a complex which would serve as the central SS cult-site. After 1941, plans were developed to enlarge it to be the so-called "Centre of the World". In 1950, the castle reopened as a museum, the Wewelsburg 1933-1945 Memorial Museum.
@stevenbr4612
@stevenbr4612 Жыл бұрын
But they destroyed the atmosphere now. They put in the chambers "New art" "Moderne Kunst", so it is all distracted now. By the way nobody knew about Wewelsburg in Germany, just since a few decades it got public, and now a lot know about it. And that why they changed the inner room decorations now.

I’m like you when it comes to historical sites. It’s scary and horrible to see the graffiti but it’s amazing to walk in the footsteps of history. I have collected a couple of nazi coins because when I was researching Polish currency in 1942 I found out that the nazis reused an older press from 1923 so the even though the coins were minted in the 1940’s they are dated from 1923 the difference is one is made from nickel and one is made from zinc. I ordered a mixed bag of foreign coins and it contained one nazi coin. It felt like I was holding history in my hand. It was such a weird feeling when I held that coin thinking about who owned it during the war. When I visit historical sites I try to imagine what it must have felt like to be there when it was built. I’m sure the people that walked those halls would never think “I’m making history”. You can almost hear the past.

What a coincidence that I stumble across this video now! A few weeks ago I went on exploring an abandoned explosives factory in Belgium. It was sitting right besides a public road, and has actually been there since the late 1800's. The factory only closed in 1990 because the company went under. Most of the buildings were still fully intact, although completely gutted. Still, I've seen some interesting pieces of equipment, and the pictures I've taken were well worth the occasional asbestos encounter.

As a journalist and lover of history, I find it such a pity that so many of the constructions of that era were demolished. Architecture is a quiet store of information on a zeitgeist, that's why archaeologists continuously delve in the dirt for signs of the bygone eras. I get the emotional reaction to Nazism at the end of and following the war, but the understanding of a disastrous historical point is so important in order to redirect the future. If we could, for instance, have studied Berghoff - which was to Hitler his private home, more than anything else - and get an in depth grip of the real man and his psyche in his private retreat, it might have given us a much better insight than the views put together in often simplistic and one dimensional hindsight by the allied victors. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, we need to also understand why and how those can go so dreadfully wrong. So much was so quickly demolished and paved over, that I can't help to fear that we missed something...something that was literally pushed underground to stew and later raise its scary head in a different place and time in a form we won't recognize. Which might be why the West is in such dumb denial over the bastard child of Nazism running amok in Ukraine...one that has inherited the power to ignite a world war.

One of the things I liked about living in Germany, was the tidiness of their forests. Not like here where vines and underbush run rampant. Forest Masters care for the forests with great care and there are many rules. We folks marched down many roads, never picked wild flowers, or dropped litter. Our country could learn from this. Sadly, polution is eating at some of the forests, but they are inventive folk and surely will find a way to halt the damage.

We're currently going through everything that led Germany was going through before WWII. Instead of avoiding the ugly side of history, we should be taking notes.

"I think I mispronounced that correctly" that's a Yogi Berra quality quote. I'm stealing it.

Amazing how the Germans built their buildings. They appear solid in construction and thick

I believe those two concrete holes were pressure tunnels, if there was an explosion in the building it would vent through these tunnels possibly saving the structure.

It’s amazing these buildings are in such good condition. It seems that the Allies attempted to level enemy thing Nazi related.

The ME-262 was not "The world's first jet-powered aircraft," the German Heinkel He-178 was; it made the first jet flight on Aug. 27, 1939. The ME-262 made its first jet-powered flight on 18 July 1942.

My wife and I spent 3 days in Oświęcim. After we explored both Auschwitz I and II we decided to explore around the area of the Monowitz site. We found a few air raid shelters that the SS used . One big one and a few smaller ones. They were in residential areas and actually in ok shape.

I feel happy in the forest myself, but that particular one is definitely eerie. You're a brave man. Be safe everywhere you travel, but I don't think you're going to run into grandma's house out there. 🐺

As a landscaper and gardener I've found loads of stuff, all went to the scrap yard. Once found a iron tankwheel, got 30,- euros from it. Heavy metal! Saved a few shells and bullets that's all. I pass unused bunkers daily. One of my customers has a communication bunker in his backyard. The bits that aren't blown up are used as a underground shooting range. There's one that has a aquariums in it, watertight concrete! An other had a bar in it. But most are way to small and stand useless along the coastline. Last year they removed some pillboxes, just 3x3 meter large concrete cabins. Useless stuff. I guess if it's all new to you you're like wow a bunker. But when you see them all the time all around you.. it's just a reminder of the occupation and we've got plenty of those. As a kid we used to play soldier on them later on discover them, see how they're build like in this video. But as an adult, I know bats like them that's about the most interesting thing from my point of view.
