These cars were used in the filming of the famous Tom Cruise NASCAR movie "Days of Thunder" and left to rot in the woods until recently! One of them had explosives in it to be used in the flip scene and some other "modifications" too! Joe Jackson of Classic Pontiac Rescue has been tracking down these abandoned movie cars which have all been rotting away in a field or in the woods for the last 34 years. They are too rotted away to restore but will at least be saved from total destruction. Randy Willingham was one of 3 body shop crewmen that painted all of the cars used in production. He brought a mostly destroyed 46 Superflo car used in Cole Trickle's flip scene that has evidence of pyrotechnics and mechanisms in place to help it "crash" harder still visible!

Days of Thunder was the start of NASCAR 's demise. When they took cars built as front wheel drive and made rear wheel drive racers, that was the start. Never went to a beach race but did attend 1959 Daytona 500.

You're doing a great job of keeping the old spirit of Nascar alive. Racing was fun until around 2008. Then it went downhill Whoever is running or should I say ruining Nascar is in idiot. Days of Thunder was entertaining but was a far stretch from reality. Hearing all the tricks and what they had to do keep these cars going. And stuntman with no racing experience was awesome . Great video!

This is so rad - cool to hear Randy’s stories about the cars and filming and how Joe is bringing them back inside after all this time. I’d love to hear of what Randy knows about the DoT car I bought a few years ago. Joe sent me a copy of that group pic as it’s the Kodak car in the upper left corner. I had a local guy who worked with NASCAR teams in the 80s and he thought my chassis might have been an old Holman Moody car, or a Ford in general, but mine has a Banjo switch plate. Still working to figure out what the car was before the movie, but tracking down the history of these cars and meeting new people is so much fun.

I talked to a guy that worked at Hendrick at the time and he gave me some cool info on it and a video/photos of it at the Days of Thunder auction after the movie wrapped and everything. But I don’t know much about it mechanically or what it was before it was skimmed as a Kodak Olds. It’s funny bc it has a huge square cut out of the hood and rewelded like something was done to it too.

In the Tony Eury Jr. episode of the Jr. Podcast, he talks about the “51 car” that was one of the last he worked on and had given the full “just chrome it” Robert Gee treatment. As someone who has been involved with the film industry for few decades, I can say with certainty that most, if not all, of the unused footage is simply thrown away within a few years after the movie is released. Mainly because each shot with any sound or music in it is actually two rolls of 35mm film... one is the actual picture and the other is a full magnetic coated sound roll. ("Picture and track") Nowadays everything is done digitally so some unused stuff may be saved for a longer period. Back when DoT was made, it was all film and mag track for the workflow.

When the movie was released there was a #51 Mello Yellow car on display at the World of Wheels car show in Green Bay, WI. My dad had a car in the show as well. After the show was over we were waiting for some of the cars to clear out so we could get dad's car out and leave. While waiting a guy approached us and asked if I wanted to sit in the car. This was better than the movie. I watched Joe's videos of the rescue of those cars. Having one of the production crew present in this video was awesome. I love this behind-the-scenes stuff. Thanks for making the commute to document more NASCAR history.

I hope you show more of the race team guy with more of his story's of the movie making and the fun they had. I wish I could have been there for the rocket powered races on the rooftop. That would have been a riot. 😅

They look like the cars from Kings Dominion. There use to be a Days of Thunder simulator ride there. You would look at these cars while waiting in line to go in

My father and a close friend, Tom Morell hung the bodies on several of those cars and didn't know they were going to be movie cars until after the film came out. Tom was a master fabricator and built cup cars in the 80s, he was asked by Rick Hendricks to do the job. He obliged and my father got to help him.

Had these not been rescued they would have eventually turned into dust. Hopefully they can at least be reskinned to make them look better.

One of my tech school college fabrication teachers actually made some of the stunt cars for this film. And it was exactly how the gentleman in the video said they would take old race car chassis do all the bodywork in house send them to the set and then they were painted and prepped as needed. Spare engines spare parts basically anything they could do to get the car on the track and look legit. Really cool stuff!

It’s a shame those cars were left out to rot, but nice to see they were able to preserve a little bit of it. Cool stories. Always wondered what all that greasy mess was all over the cars at the end lol Watching it as a kid I was like… “This is so unrealistic! They don’t get this dirty”. There are some crazy Daytona party stories from when they were filming. Great video guys
