Abandoned Dirt Bike Revival, The Wrong Way. Suzuki DR 350 SE Dual Sport Tinkering

Lifelong Motorcycle mechanic and collector of all things two wheeled here- The brass jet you cant get out is the PILOT jet, it effect Idle and low throttle mixture The idle adjustment you referred to is supposed to have a short chunk of what looks like the inner wire of a Speedo Cable going to it, and Knob mounted on the other end so you can remotely adjust the idle, yours is broke off - Someone has been monkeying around with the wires going to the keyswitch because Suzuki Always has a 4-wire molex style plug (usually bright green) on them, I can see a bunch of Crimp Butt connectors? You'd have been better off using ATF as shock oil- Did you do a Compression check, because when you spin the starter it sounds SUPER low for a DR350? Should be 85-115 ish much less than that it wont run at all- Those bikes cleaned up and running, (with Title) would sell around here for $2,500-$3.500 range, That Aftermarket Desert-Racer Gast Tank is cool, I have a DR650 here with the big tank as well, I would think you could afford to throw a new carb on it, and still not be upside down in the value? Check the Valve adjustment, Modern bikes beat the valves up into the head as they wear (from Unleaded gas) and the valves Tighten up over time, and this will eventually kill the seats and lower compression also! Thanks for the info! I did find a bunch of crimp-on connectors, they're actually bullet style ones. Looks like someone hacked into the harness pretty good. I did not do a compression test, the plug is 10mm and I don't have the adapter, but I was thinking I should check the valves. I'll do that next time I have the tank off. I went ahead and ordered the carb, do you happen to know a good source for the seals and stuff for the rear shock? I haven't played with bikes a whole lot, so I'm just guessing at suppliers.

like you said you've been wanting one for 30 years, and they aren't cheap either which if you decided to sell it, it might be hard finding another one down the road for a decent price. Lastly theres no denying the bike needs some work, but the things that it needs your the perfect guy for the job to fix it right.

I don't know you can get them pretty cheap, the parts can get expensive though and a lot of the bigger parts are discontinued. I just got one for less than $200 but it needs a top end and has been sitting for years.

I REALLY MISS MY DR350SE!!!!! Best all around bike I ever had. I would have to recommend the Mikuni pumper carb. Sweet bike!

I had a Suzuki race bike, and deleted the ign switch. I replaced it with a DPST toggle switch. Labelled On and Not On. Used an equipment push button for the starter. Best mod ever!

LBG nice, ive had a DR650 recently traded it for a XR600 but I also just picked up a 2009 XT250 bought it cheap just working on it now hasnt run in years I looked all over for a DR350 that fuel tank is the bomb! Love your channel and the similar low buck mindset thanks!

To remove the cap from the nitrogen bottle, instead of pulling it, push it. With two fingers on the cap, with your other hand add a little air pressure. It'll pop right into your hand. The "two fingers" are to prevent the cap from gaining velocity & "popping" across the room.

Go buy one MX-Style carb and you will love this bike! They are fun little dirt bikes with good torque! Even if its a used one carb...qhat you can do to make it run better: just run it wide open throttle and just squirt some brake fluid in the open intake....yes it will smoke like hell BUT you will clean up the jets and the valves in one step 🙂 If the bike has been stored a long time and didnt run properly before that the valvetrain might be "gummed" up and would need that treatment.

On my dirtbag budget dirt bikes, I like to drill a little hole in the oil cap, up by the handle bars, and put a cheapy 1" diameter kitchen thermometer in it. Protected by the tank and the handle bars, and for $2.99, you can have a steam gauge oil temp that you can read on the fly.

I've got 2 DR350's, they are cracking bikes, both have CV carbs and run great, I owned a dirt version with the std slide carb and there was no difference in power, if you can sort the cv carb out it will work fine. I rebuilt the shocks on both my bikes, simple and cheap, I have 60,000 miles on my one DR and it still starts and run's great, solid and dependable bikes.

I'd change the carb and ride it for awhile put a little t.l.c into it keep it. Paint it like one of the half tracks and put a small camper on back of the halftrack and the motorcycle can be at the very back. So when u camp cam take off on the bike and ride. Would be so epic of a build.

Your intake/spacer issue was more than likely a mikuni tm33 pumper carb conversion. The spacer is needed to push the tm33 back far enough so the air mixture screw isn’t jammed up against the starter. The mixture screw knob attaches to the bowl screw with a bracket. A spring connects the knob to the mixture screw in the carb. Anywho, cool video.

I have a DR250s 1993 Japan version. I had a problem with the carb too. My carb is not the original, my DR has a 34mm GN250 carb. I had to set the fuel level and I had to reduce the spark gap from 0.85mm to 0.5mm and I set the pilot screw.. The engine starting much better.

Yeah give it a little candy carb sweets,then you can take it on a real ride.those bikes make great daul-purpose bikes because they got enough cc,s to keep up to traffic but also shine on the back trails as well.ive gotten a klr-650 and only rode it once its just too tall and heavy.gonna try to lower forks n doglegs see if i can then reach ground.if i can than the wieght is only a problem sitting still.once moving its not an issue.you can always flip it once you get the shocks fixed.snookie pa.

Check the valve clearance. My fourwheeler was running the same way. Didn't want to start when cold but would fire right up when warmed up. Would cut out when giving it gas. A new carb didn't help.

Of course you have to keep the bike. I say try to find a used carb and rebuild it the low buck garage way. Maybe a comparable carb to retrofit. A dirt bike is way too much fun to get rid of. You said you’ve waited 30 years for that bike

Looks like maybe it had a tm33 on it because ot the small intake boot and spacer. The throttle pull is different on te tm33 also. I have the take off bst in my parts bin. I think these bikes are highly sensitive to changes in airflow and jetting. That exhaust seems like it needs repacking. I'd check the valve clearances. That carb may just be worn out. Close up the airbox if you can. There is a mod that involves cutting the boot that goes around the shock to increase airflow. Your boot looked modified and taped. Mine was way way difficult to start and ran like poop with an old bst carb and no airbox.

You would have fun on that in the desert. Could you find a used carb for it ? Dont have to be new, or is that price for a used carb. An ultrasonic cleaner could sort the carb out if you have one. :) Make it a good bike. looks worth it really.
