Don't be discouraged. I drove a 318 26 foot motor home up the Cajon pass (notorious long 6 percent grade) and it pulled great.

43:00 If you rotate the distributor the way it rotates, that is delaying the timing. So, in this case the circular arrow points clockwise from the top so to advance it you have to turn it counter clockwise from the top.

The key thing is most big block engines has a 4 barrel carb.
@auteurfiddler8706
@auteurfiddler8706 Ай бұрын
The weak spot of the 318 is the timing cover. It is a cast aluminum piece that goes between the block and the water pump. Water passes through all three in two locations. If that corrodes right where it seals to the block or right where it seals to the water pump, you will lose water into the sump of the engine or squirt it on the ground, respectively. So you will want to inspect that area after you take off the water pump, at least the front.

Small Block Chrysler LA engine. The 318 cubic inch flavor........Find the build sheet under the back seat. Also the metel card on the driver side under the hood. Also the Electronic ignition and bucket seats with the SE trim package is cool.

When you block every vacuum port, it is possible to miss the two most obvious ones. The brake booster and the PCV. I had a brake booster go bad and the car would not idle. I could only drive it home by blocking off the port on the intake. The clue was that the brake pedal went hard as a rock. I have never had a pcv go bad, but it does happen. Also, it can be bad with little way of knowing. The cheap ones sold today at the parts stores are more likely to be bad than 50 year old ones from the factory.

The rear axle on a 400 car in that year is the much desired 8 3/4, which from the rear has a smooth round center section with no bolts showing. The bolts are on the front side near the universal joint. By contrast, the 8 1/4 axle comes on 318 cars. It has a cover held on by bolts and you can see the bolts from the back of the car. Ten bolts I believe.

The plugs were different, 318 plugs were longer. That’s what made us look at the numbers on the block to verify what engine it was
@auteurfiddler8706

I am going to guess that it was always a 318 car. 73 and newer B bodies use a different K member for small block vs big block and it would be rather difficult to swap between them. Also, the engine appears to be decorated exactly as a 318 would be in 1973. A 318 used a shorter trans which would need a different driveshaft. What is the 5th digit of the vin? Also, every Mopar guy expects to see a fender tag. The Vin is repeated on the bottom row of the fender tag. Glad you got the trunk open without drilling the lock. This car is easy to access the lock by going into the trunk from the back seat, so no need to drill or pound out a lock. And the pins can be swapped around in the trunk and door locks, or , better yet, a new key created by a locksmith. Locksmiths are pretty rare these days, but you might find a real one on line.

Hey, you, I'm a mechanic for fourty one years. Just don't shit Chevy, ok? If you are only a consumer. Chevy along with other American cars has it's shortcomings. Why show me an American branded cars which had no record of recalls. Here in our country, Chevy was named bestselling car of the year ten times. And as a mechanic I agree.
@joegallo8425
@joegallo8425 Ай бұрын
@@BOEHHO89 they all had there problems back then, didn't matter if it was GM, Ford or Mopar, Ford had issues with ignition switches catching fire, dura spark issues, a so so braking system on some models, Chevy's were oil burning turds, and ate up flywheels along with a weak camshaft and valvtrain, Mopars had weak front ends and ignitions in the early years, the lean burn was a mistake also, and that dreaded starter turururur that most hated, I grew up in that time, I will say I've never had a cam go flat in My Mopars and never replaced a starter.
