Abandoned DT&I railroad tunnel with 5 foot thick coal seam

This is an abandoned DT&I railroad tunnel. This was abandoned and torn up in 1982 but the rails in the tunnel are still in place! This tunnel was cut in 1851 and was in use till 1982. The tunnel has a 5 foot thick coal seam in it also. Wouldn’t recommend walking through it since it’s falling in.

They had major height issues with the tunnel in the later years preceding 1982 due to having only a 15ft vertical clearance. DT&I Trying to run their EMD GP7's and GP40's through Royersville tunnel was slow and cramped process. There are parts of the tunnel where the tops of the cabs were just mere inches from the roof of the tunnel.

The rails are still in there also! Just in really deep water though.

There's still rails in place going down Railroad St in Ironton. The rails are paved over for most of the street going east, but before you turn onto N 2nd Street the rails are still completely exposed. You can however still see the rails that have been paved over because the tops have made perfectly spaced cracks and indentations.

@@Paw95 Preston, your coverage of the Vera Span and the east outlet of the peavine was very interesting, I would like to know what the Tower’s ( operator ) was called that was located at that location, long before ( ctc ) there had to be an operator stationed there to control the movement of trains and to line switches for train movements, it may very well could have been called “Vera Junction” I don’t know…..also the N&W could have very well controlled all of the electric switches on the Peavine from that location, any information will help us viewers out, thank you Preston……good day and be safe building those bridges…..ms~~~

The DT&I did well under Ford he was very innovative he was the first I believe to have truck trailers on flat cars! The gobbermint said he violated interstate commerce laws monopoly on truck and train service.He had big plans re-routing the line from Waverly to Portsmouth via Route 104 that would have been cool.Stay safe great video.!
