Stayed here on our honeymoon in 1978. The two story building at the 14:00 mark of your video was where they stuck us. We couldn't open the bathroom door without it hitting the toilet. They stuck us in a terrible room since we were young kids that they thought didn't know any better. My parents stayed there and told us to go there that is was beautiful, but that's not what we saw. That large bird cage had a large parrot in it and there were pools with dolphins in them. The room had a connecting door and you could see a man in the next room through the spaces in the moulding. It was the building where their workers lived. The rest of the place was beautiful with the front desk workers dressed in tuxedos, but that wasn't the experience we had.

It closed in September of 2011 for redevelopment by the buyer who purchased it in 2006. Reviews indicate he did nothing to improve the property during the five years before it closed and it was in bad shape. In 2015 he engaged in a cleaning up of the property but a hurricane later hit the keys doing a lot of damage. His intent was to build 38 new cottages.

Elizabeth Kessler just saw something that said there was movement there in 2018 and he’s in the works of getting permits to demolish what’s there now and rebuild! He’s hoping this year to start.

For me this is one of the coolest videos u have created. My sister and I lived there for quite awhile and very close to this resort. If u look north on highway 1 u will see banana bay. We worked there and lived in the trailers next to the hurricane club. Crystal bay was hit hard during Hurricane Wilma. They were able to get some of their seasonal rentals functional but many remained too damaged. The regulars eventually stopped making reservations. In 2007 we got a couple of furniture items while they liquidated. An investor was suppose to redo the whole place but it never happened. There was a time when the causeway next to the resort was full of all sorts of water recreation items. It was a fun place to stay. The people who stayed there would come to the big restaurant at banana bay and eat. It was like one big family. Great job guys. 👍👍👍👍👍

Was going thru old Visa statements yesterday and came across Crystal Bay Resort, Marathon FLA. Next day I see your video!! My wife and I were driving from Miami on our way to Key West in July 2005. Hurricane Dennis had just gone through the lower Keys so we figured we'd hang out in the upper ones for a few days for things to get back to normal in Key West. Many of the motels in all of the Keys were closed so we were thankful to find that the Crystal Bay Resort would rent us a room for a night. I think we were the only ones there that day----the place seemed like a ghost town. Even at that time (2005) it didn't look like a thriving business. Everything was kind of rundown looking. One of it's shortfalls was that there was no good swimming area. We had to access the water down a boat ramp. It wasn't a place I would have wanted to stay more than a day. Anyway thanks for the video--brings back memories, even if the place is barely recognizable now.

I stayed here several times in the late 90s early 2000s. It was owned by a nice Brit couple who had fresh flowers in the port a pot. I've never seen such a nice and clean port a pot. They had a fee exotic birds across the property. I once caught a nurse shark off the dock. Good memories, but sad to see the state of disrepair.

I just love the Keys! I went to high school in the 60s in Miami and my family went to the keys a lot. We stayed in Marathon Lodge in think. I learned about key limes there and went on a journey to try it (pie) everywhere! There are so many different kinds, you shouldnt give up on one!! Cool place you found, I thought why are you working on vacation?!?! One more thing! I got sunburned SO bad they called it "sun poisoning" and it was bad!! Sunscreen always there, always!!! The Keys are magical, I will always love them. Keep up the good videos!!!

We stayed there several years ago. It was a beautiful place with all the cottages. Lots of activities. The miniature golf was nice. Had a giant sized chess set and my family played ping pong on that cement table. One of the best family vacations ever. Love Marathon.

I was there twice and it was a beautiful paradise with beautiful flowers. Jack was super friendly and helpful and often had a parrot on his shoulder. You could see small sharks in the sea. Too bad to see the former beautiful resort like this - but thanks for the interesting article.

I stayed at that resort two days ago guys. I'm sure the there are better hotels but the atmosphere there is top shelf. I shot a record low round of minature golf and cleaned up on the shuffle board. I did find it difficult to get room service as well as getting clean bedding.

Great video. I always respect your thoughts on vandals and vandalism. Broken down rotting stuff is cool from a historical standpoint. My husband and I have stayed there a few times we could bring our boat to dock it for the whole time and could bring our kids we could cook our catch in our unit the manager kept parrots that the kids could hold and take pictures with it was always a blast

When you shower later, puts some milk of magnesium on the burnt areas. Plaster it on and just go to bed. Put more on the next morning if it is still uncomfortable.

It is so messed up to destroy something just because no one is around to stop it. Not like it's truly abandoned, someone DOES own the property. I believe vandals should be charged with B&E, Burglary and Home Invasion. That would help curb the destruction.

Great now we have to worry about sharks eating our favorite explorer! ha ha I kept waiting to see an alligator or snakes! Looks like mother nature did more damage than the vandals! Rob you always have so much confidence when you hold the v=camera in your intros! I think when you stand away from the camera your a little nervous and forget your lines! Still good stuff just noticed the change in you! I wouldn't want to stay in this place with all that plane traffic too much noise!

My dad owned that place and it was beautiful. It was in magazines and marathon. He went to Disney and got characters for the mini golf course. It had a beautiful pool. It had a tiki hot that was a bar that was by the water. You could come bring your boat and then come off, have a drink and then go back out to the water, probably put a couple million into it at the time flowers pink and purple. It’s a shame. The owners didn’t keep it up.

Hurricane Irma hit in fall of 2017, it caused much of the wash up debris and likely boarded up windows as much of region was impacted. SW FL resident!

This was a very nice place at one time. The tile bathroom was very nice. It looked like it had many amenities. It was set up very nicely to be able to be accessed by boat. I'm surprised someone hasn't made off with that MinnKota troll motor. Very nice explore and loved your intro including the out take!

Marathon suffered badly because of Hurricane Irma in 2017....but you said it was abandoned long before that 2011? Are u sure ?

We used to stay there! There was a charter fishing boat we went out on with a great couple that lived on the boat.
