The story of Packard's closure wasn't a result of imports stealing market share, but largely blamed on a merger with Studebaker, the latter of which had serious financial shortfalls Packard did not discover because of a lack of due diligence on Packard's part prior to the merger. The merger caused a "cheapening" of Packard's image in the luxury car market, people perceived the cars as dressed-up Studebakers and switched to cars like Cadillac and Lincoln.

I'd have to concur with many of the people on here and say that Detroit really isn't that bad of a city! It gets a bad rap but a lot of the city has been rebuilt and renovated. There were a lot of people back in the day that made amazing efforts to preserve some of the historical aspects of the city and it truly is a very interesting city in my opinion! If you're into history, I'd definitely recommend you go check out Detroit! Regardless, another amazing video! I enjoyed watching it :)

Rnk, love your channel but as a native Michigander- Detroit isn’t the doom and gloom that you, and the media CONTINUES to perpetuate. There are certainly dangerous and unsafe parts of Detroit. Please name me a major city that doesn’t (Chicago anyone?) Detroit’s recent and ongoing revitalization shouldn’t be forgotten. It’s an amazing city that has a long road ahead of it, but has come a very long way in the last 10-15years. You have history books, photos and now videos capturing history of what was once, and RnK does it like no other. They show us the history of these places through the lens of filming and photography, while letting the walls, photos, furniture and other possessions talk as they take us through these moments in time from the past to today. Its always heartbreaking to see these places that were thriving at one time turn into this.

Was that 1970's Movie: ''American Graffiti' based on the 1950's Cooley High, as well?
@lukasstrait9307
@lukasstrait9307 5 жыл бұрын
@@SunLightFawn, American Graffiti was set during the last night of summer 1962. It was written by George Lucas just before he started working on Star Wars. It was semi-autobiographical. The original working title of the film was "A Slow Night In Modesto" as in California, Lucas' home town. The movie came out when I was 10 years old. It is still one of my all time favorite movies. Many of the kids in American Graffiti went on to become big stars of television and the big screen. Of course, Ron Howard was already established as Opie Taylor from Andy Griffith's show. But he would go on to become Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. Suzanne Sommers went on to Three's Company. Cindy Williams went on to Laverne and Shirley. Mackenzie Phillips went on to One Day at a Time. Harrison Ford went on to Star Wars and then Raiders of the Lost Ark. Charles Martin Smith who played Terry the Toad contined a long career as a supporting actor. Richard Dreyfus, who played the lead, Curt, went on to star in Jaws, Stand By Me, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, The Goodbye Girl and Mr. Hollands Opus. He got his start with American Graffiti. The movie has one of the all time greatest golden era of Rock and Roll soundtracks. Wolfman Jack was even in the film. After all of that fun, and all those laughs and just a great rollicking time, when the pictures of those characters came up at the end and you discovered what had happened to them all after that night ended... You could have heard a pin drop in the theatre. We just stood there with our mouths hanging open in disbelief. I don't know if you have ever seen the movie, so that's as far as I will go. If you have never seen it, you owe it to yourself. It is one of the greatest films of it's era. There are only two other films similar to it. Stripes is a good film with a slightly different theme, but is still a riot. And the other is Animal House, which is a drop dead funny masterpiece to rival American Graffiti. All 3 are worthy of 90 minutes of your life. If you like a good laugh, I can't recommend them enough. λυκας

I've never been to Detroit, but through KZbin I feel like I've been to Detroit. I first became aware of the plight of Detroit's Highland Park and Brush Park districts a little over a year ago totally by accident. And to see the decay and abandonment of once thriving neighborhoods totally amazed me. Does that sound dysfunctional? Anyway, I'm happy to hear that Detroit is beginning to experience an upswing with the injection of new blood and new and innovative industry. You cannot build a city on 1 industry and expect that it will thrive like that forever. Diversity is where the job market is. It still has quite a ways to go but time heals all wounds right? I can't wait to see how Detroit fares over the next 10 years or so. Good luck to the D and may God bless you all.

The upper deck of the gym was actually a running track. Some schools here in the US didn't have enough funds for an actual track to be put down outside so they built upper decks in gymnasiums so students could jog/run. Plus it would make it possible for the school to have a track team and compete against other school districts.

My 100+ year old university gym has an elevated track like that one. It's for running, not cycling. They are common in old gyms built in areas with harsh winters so people have a warm and dry place to run laps. The surface is banked because it helps runners maintain a steady pace on a smaller track. Outdoor tracks are banked too, but you don't notice it because they are much bigger.

Looks like integration didn't work very well in Detroit. My old neighborhood, Brightmoor, that had white picket fences I would walk by on my way to school, is a waste land now with the few houses that are left standing. They sold for a few thousand dollars each back in the early 90s when my uncle was the last one to sell his house. He paid more back in 1957 than he sold it for in 95. Other cities around the country had their houses go up in value 30 times during those years but white flight destroyed Detroit.
