Abandoned Fred's Super Dollar - Southaven, MS. This is a video from our trip to Texas back in May 2020 that we did as we headed back to PA. Although I'm not familiar with Fred's, I heard they are a discount store and that many of their locations have closed within the past couple of years.

Fred’s filed bankruptcy in 2019. I missed working with a lot of great people at the corporate office on Getwell Road. CEO thought it was a great idea to acquire part of Rite Aid. When the deal fail apart, a PE firm got involved they sank Fred’s quicker than the titanic.

I use to work for the getwell drug and dollar store in Leland , ms which was under the Fred’s brand and never knew what was the reason we had to close and now I know ....thanks

I was the store manager of the freds in marion nc almost 10 years ago. Sad that the company went under it was actually a great store with low prices but the low prices and a bad ceo eventually killed it

Fred's was a chain of dollar stores originally started by the Vail and the Baddour family. I worked there for 12 years. This Freds has been redone into a Dollar General. The Chain was forced out of business by money hungry individuals, who also ran Payless Shoe Source out of business. The location that you are at was actually some of the last stores that they built. It had not been opened very long before closed. We had stores in TX, Ar, AL, GA, LA, MS Fl....Pretty much the south. The home office was in Memphis TN. Lots of great people lost their jobs. Southaven / Olive Branch....You are in my neck of the woods. The Kmart is actually now a Bargain Hunt and a few other things. I also worked at the Original Kmart that was behind where the newer building. is.

Fred's closed all their stores in my area with no warning a few years ago. Hated to see them go. Was a nice alternative to Dollar General. Most have been repurposed as Family Dollar/Dollar Tree stores now.

Yeah thats the one on church rd, it must've close a couple of years ago, another good clothing store down in senatobia ms call "GOODYS" closed last August we were down there, it was a great store, the big company's taking over. This spot is now home to DG, ther was another Fred's on northwest dr acroos from the municipal court, its closed as well.

Hi WallieB26! I leave KZbin comments very infrequently, but definitely had to say welcome to my neck of the woods for this one. I live in DeSoto County and run both a flickr page (Retail Retell) and the Mid-South Retail Blog. It's great to see some coverage of Fred's on your channel. I went around and photographed many of them as they were closing. I've written several blog posts on those, and have many more yet to come. This particular location is now a Dollar General -- I'll have a post on that eventually as well. Will absolutely link back to your video in it. Dollar General did some façade renovations and it now looks a bit more upscale than the Fred's days -- although this design in and of itself was an upscale one for Fred's. I'm so glad you pointed out the cart corrals built into the landscaping islands! I love that. It was a late-era Fred's feature, and one that I wasn't sure a lot of people had ever noticed or paid attention to. I geek out over creative design like that, haha. Also glad you captured the poor electronic sign. That thing kept going right up until the Dollar General conversion. It was indeed Fred's message board (referencing immunizations at the pharmacy, among other things). I'm not sure if you captured any other stuff while you were in the area, but I look forward to seeing it if you did. There were five other Fred's stores in DeSoto County alone, and plenty of other stuff to be seen from the retail side of things. Since you also mentioned the former Super Kmart on Stateline -- I discovered last week that the exterior has actually been freshly painted with a new, calmer/more neutral color scheme. The colors look nice, but more importantly it's good just to see the property getting some well-deserved attention at all. It had not been painted since Burlington Coat Factory first moved in not long after the Kmart closed in 2005. It's awesome to see so many comments from other folks in DeSoto County, including my home of Hernando, and other parts of Mississippi as well. This hobby interests more people than I thought! I even see a shoutout to my own flickr page -- wow! Apologies for the super-long comment -- like I said, I don't leave them often. Hope you guys are doing well!

FRED’S, THE LOW PRICE LEADER. Lol This is now a dollar general as of 2/2021. Also from what I remember from my childhood here, that was a regular K-Mart. We never had a “super” k mart and I was always so mad. I wanted to go to a Super k mart lol awesome seeing abandonments from my lifelong city on KZbin lol
