Result, no kids to see the joy on their faces on Christmas morning, instead I can re-watch this and see the pure joy on your face from about 10 mins onwards. Awesome. Memories of being driven in one of these as a very young child, having to sit on the floor as it was illegal to carry passengers in them. travelling around Kirkham with my gran come flooding back. Also seeing your collection/obsession makes me feel a whole load better as I have an aircraft fuselage and a cockpit section in my garden. Maybe I am (almost) normal after all. Keep it up. Looking forward to the next installment.

Anyhow, this video made me think of the famous scene in Frankenstein when he screams, "It's alive!!!!" HEHE. Your wife is amazing, not only does she put up with one of the most obscure car habits in the UK, she also gets stucks in and helps, then instead of giving you an ear bending about another heap of junk she offers to make you tea, WOW ! she is every petrolheads dream Lady !
@HubNut7 жыл бұрын
She puts up with a LOT. Our honeymoon involved driving a Citroen H van to Sweden and back. Not many women would agree to that! I don't recommend it to be honest...
@ianvirco58977 жыл бұрын
Driving a H van to Sweden ? Not recommended ? this is just the sort of ill conceived scheme that us petrolheads live for, i have always hankered after driving something inappropiate to somewhere obscure. Anyway an adventure like that with the one you love has far more meaning and memories than two weeks in a bland hotel somewhere you'll both forget about.

There is a place that used to have dozens of these little blue 3 wheeler's, i noticed them on a railway journey in a yard on the way from Bristol to London, i'm sure if anyone wants one (unless they have all been scrapped) they should be fairly easy to obtain, i picked up 3 Lambretta's this way many years ago, under a tarp with just the front wheel and part of the forks exposed, you wont believe what you can find if you keep your eye's peeled on rail journeys.

Nice one, my Nanna used to have one of these from '74 to '82 - she used to take it out every day whether she needed to go shopping or not :) She was 72 when she passed her driving test! It gave her the ability to go and see her friends when their community was split up by Manchester City Council's "slum clearance" in the 70's. I'm convinced that this little car and her ability to get off the horrible estate which was miles from any facilities or services prolonged her life. I wonder how many of these are still on the roads?

Not only do we see Hubnut in his old habitat - outside in the cold and damp, we also get to see the rare sight of a Nipper. There were many different invalid carriages, but these Model 70s were only built by Invacar in Thundersely, Essex and AC, I think at Thames Ditton. They no longer used Villiers engines.

My mistake. Yes, Hadleigh and Thundersley are (to some of us) the same place, and I meant the old Greeves works. One of my neighbours from childhood had one of these, which replaced his previous one which was the darker blue. Watching him drive it was quite scary, he had MS, but at the time there were plenty of other odd little 3 wheelers that folk chose to buy.

Jolly good! Entertaining. Before it starts it sounds like a tractor. After it starts it sounds like a lawn mower. With that erectile oil cooler and shrouded fan it imitates half a VW engine. The better half, of course. But that rev-up clank...is that the squirrel banging a wrench in protest or something? Loose main pulley, exhaust bracket? Reminds me of my youthful days (age 15) getting my '68, 3-stroke Saab to start. I say 3 stroke because when that 2-cycle smoked into steady animation I almost had a stroke (of disbelief). I'll have to check back and see if it can amble down the road of its own volition. I like those old micro-machines; just the essentials, groundbreaking minimalism.

Great video. Looking forward to seeing it running. My father had Invacars for about 20 years as he was disabled. My old dad had an invalid car, but his was the AC Acedes, not the Invacar. Aluminium body. 197c Villiers motor and 4 gears forward or reverse. With a 2 stroke all you had to do was reverse the key and the engine ran in reverse, so 4f and 4r. I drove it a couple of times, not supposed to but... Dad was supplied with them for years, all maintenance, repairs, tax and insurance paid for, all he did was put fuel in the thing...

I even stated that I love how solid the doors slam shut and someone said they would kill themselves if they thought like this. Well, I am weird but so what. I love the attention to detail. As for the starter problem at 10:42, my Volvo did this a few times and it was poor continuity with the connection on the starter solenoid. All I did was crimp the connector together and clean off the connector on the solenoid and it was no problem after that.

Green light for oil standard. Red for ign, blue for main beam. But you were asking why? Valid question.

What happens to the Donor Shell? Looks like a lovely opportunity to replace the underpinnings with Ape 500 Parts or something else.
@HubNut7 жыл бұрын
Donor chassis looks ok, engine turns, so no need for a body swap.

RE the green oil pressure light: Early (earlier than 1968 or thereabouts) had two (unlabelled) lights at the bottom of the speedo, a red generator (and fan belt) warning light, and a green oil pressure warning light. Later years had red lights with labels. So it's possible there's a common thread that makes the oil warning light green.

Ah, thanks. I'm used to green meaning indicator. I'm glad things are more standardised these days...

What engine is in that, when I took the engine out of an invacar in the late 60's it had a Villiers twqo stroke engine with a cibe dynastart built into the flywheel, the engine had two sets of points and would run in both directions so the car could be reversed. I used the engine for a hovercraft.

It's a Steyr-Puch aircooled flat twin. This is a Model 70 when they seriously upgraded the spec. 20bhp!

Thanks for the quick reply, will be interesting to see the rest of the restoration. Do you know what else that engine went in.
@HubNut7 жыл бұрын
I think the engine was developed for Steyr-Puch's licence-built Fiat 500, as they didn't like Fiat's own engine. It was also fitted to the fabled Haflinger, though in larger form.
@Equiluxe17 жыл бұрын
I did some conversion work on a Haflinger in the early 90's so that it could run on rails,that one had the VW diesel in it, even then it was rather under powered especially with the weight of the cherry picker on it, must have been a dog with that petrol engine.
@HubNut7 жыл бұрын
That'd be more likely to be a larger Pinzgauer. Had the six-cylinder VW diesel engine.

Great to see it run, i may be jumping the gun but if an engine hasn't run for 14 years shouldn't it be stripped and rebuilt?
@HubNut7 жыл бұрын
Pfft. That's the boringly sensible approach. I was confident it had oil pressure and would actually turn over before engaging the starter.

No don't do it. I have years of experience and you will move stuff only for it to be in the way somewhere else. The only way to a tidy garage or workshop is to clear out and throw stuff away. Then you will have to live the guilt of knowing that 2 days after you chucked the left hand flange knuckle over the wall at the tip someone you know will need one and it will be your fault that their classic will be kept off the road by your selfish actions.

Might be a little difficult to obtain a new exhaust system, possible have to be a "homebrew job"?

I'll investigate my spares car first. Second-hand ones do also exist.
