Ah good old Duquesne, PA. I went to Duquesne University for undergrad and I remember my dad thinking the university was in Duquesne the city. We were all in for a shock when we saw this area. Well, my dad was more in shock. I had told him that Duquesne University was in the city but of course he didn't believe me at that time and thought maybe the campus in downtown was their satellite location. He was utterly confused at first 😂 Good times.

LJS has been closing a lot of locations here in Iowa the past several years. Despite what other people are saying, I'll admit that I've always enjoyed their food, and still do. It's the customer service and restaurant upkeep that has drastically gone downhill lately, which has been making me increasingly hesitant to go back.

Just to let you know. The Rite Aid is just up the street from there and The Ames was originally a Hills. Also That was a Krogers then turned into a Giant Eagles. There was also a Kmart there on the other side of Krogers. The building that was by itself was a Mellon Bank the a chinese buffet. I live about a 1/4 mile away from there. Also Long Johns has been there from the beginning along with McDonalds. Ponderosa was where the Taco Bell is now and Rax was where the Masonic Hall is now around the corner.

Walk down history lane. Before it was Ecard it was a Thrift Drug. Grocery store was a Kroger then a giant eagle ( that moved up the hill in the Kennywood shops) then it turned into a Thrift store. To the far left was first a giant Grant's discount store then Kmart took it over in the late 70's. Closed after kmarts first bankruptcy 2003 I think. Between kmart and the grocery store there was a Towers store had the same type merchandise as a David Weis. Not to get too long winded but Kmart also had a 50,000 sq.ft. fixture warehouse behind the Towers salesfoor. Any time a store needed fixtures/ showcases etc.. the called the warehouse or if a remodel was happening that is where they got what they needed.

For awhile in the early 2000s the tenet next to the Eckerd was Red White and Blue Thrift Store. The demolished part of the plaza was a Kmart. The place across the parking lot towards taco bell was a Mellon Bank and then was turned into a chinese restaurant around 98. That family moved into Duquesne and their son was in the same grade as me for the literal 3 days he lasted at school. The other kids were so brutal to him. They called him Jackie Chan and asked him to do karate moves all day long. On the third day he ran out of the lunchroom in tears and I never saw him again.

@doug90664 жыл бұрын
@Dusk Raccoon okay I hadn't known. Yeah one location closed sometime after Eckerd became CVS once CVS built a brand new & bigger store then the former CVS (Eckherd) been vacant for years, one day when I was driving City transit van & had down time I looked inside which as Wallie's videos all empty but was interesting. Another CVS which was a former Ekherd was torn down once CVS bought ajenant (if spelled right) property to build a new CVS a few years ago. Anyhow thank you for the interesting information.

I'm in Houston, and I remember when the Eckerd name just disappeared overnight and became CVS. A lot of the locations that didn't convert to CVS (because they were closed to a CVS already operating) were subleased out to other tenants. A lot of ex-Eckerd locations CVS didn't convert are Advance Auto Parts stores here.
@christiangonzales74294 жыл бұрын
@Dusk Raccoon CVS subleased a lot of former Eckerds that were too close to existing CVS stores to many different tenants, and Advance Auto was a major sub-lessee of them. As for Rite Aid, didn't Walgreens take over the pharmacy departments within some of the stores while the rest of store was operated by Rite Aid? (Kinda like CVS is doing for Target)
@christiangonzales74294 жыл бұрын
@Dusk Raccoon CVS bought Target's pharmacy business and also set up a store-within-a-store concept where CVS sells certain pharmacy items in the store in addition to operating the pharmacy. The deal also included Minute Clinic, which CVS opened up inside Target stores as well.

Might be worth checking out someday if you have on the right gear to go on the hill side Wallie. I know you don't like to take things and that is respectable, but if the other side is plainly Ames. You should take it and restore it since it is getting weathered and going to waste. Save a piece of history. Cuz like someone else said idk if u could get the black paint off of it. It might be worth contacting the owner of the property to see if u could have it for free. If u explain your reasoning for wanting it . That Ames sign is awesome wish it wasn’t painted over and I guess that one of those places has to be an Ames I wish I can have that sign but too bad I don’t live up there I live far away from there but had to admit that Ames sign is cool and hopefully it stays there
