STORY
Malls were once the pinnacle of the American dream, but many of these places are now abandoned or partially abandoned. In this video, we will explore one abandoned mall and one dead mall.
The abandoned mall is the Northridge Mall, which opened its doors in 1972 and thrived for many years. However, after only two decades of operation, problems began to surface, including internal corruption, external crime, and an exodus from the area. This led to a steep decline in traffic, and the mall eventually closed its doors in 2003 due to a lack of tenants.
The dead mall is a mall that is still open to the public, but only a few stores remain. It's an eerie place, with silent corridors and empty storefronts. The mall opened its doors in 1988, but it was doomed from the start. Management went bankrupt after just one year, and the mall's repeated ownership changes in the late 1990s decimated its tenant base.
In this video, we will explore both of these malls and give you a glimpse into what lies within. We will also interview several last customers of the dead mall, who knew what it was like when the mall was still in full operation.
This video is a must-watch for anyone interested in abandoned places, the decline of the American mall, or the social and economic factors that have led to the rise of dead malls.

I think old malls need to be converted into old folks home, daycares, places where you can grow food, supermarkets, movie theaters and shopping for antiques with just apartments for the elderly I think it would be a great thing to convert this shopping mall into something similar to that. That's a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing Cincinnati mall with us

I saw a video of an old mall in Europe that they converted it into apartments on the upper levels and anything that you would need on the bottom. People felt protected because of security and they never had to go out in the weather for groceries, doing their laundry, post office, flowers, salons, etc. Not sure if it would work in the US, but it’s a nice thought!

The old Westwood Mall in Houston, TX was converted to one huge office complex. Still looks like a mall on the inside, but with offices (and even a for-profit college to boot) instead of stores and restaurants. The old Sears attached to it was converted to a BMW dealership.

It's a huge shame that Amazon is resulting in dead malls, and I dread to think what life would become if Amazon becomes large enough to eliminate shops so we don't have physical shops to see, touch, try and compare items before purchasing 😔

There won't be such a thing as a dying breed, malls like this will be brought back to life like never before. All we need to do is create campaigns to raise funds and restore them to their former glories, develop reemployment programs, and bring back the old stores from the past.

Man, when Cincinnati Mall first opened as Forest Fair, it was amazing. Literally somewhere the family could spend the entire day. Mom and Dad would shop at the, relatively, high-end stores. The kids could play all day at Time Out on the Court, the indoor amusement park and arcade. There was a Ferris Wheel, bumper cars, mini-golf, maybe more. Dozens and dozens of arcade and ticket redemption games. Lunch at the expansive food court. Then you could all catch a show at the second-run discount movie theater. It was the place to be in the early 90s.

Elizabeth Arden (December 31, 1881 - October 18, 1966), also known as Elizabeth N. Graham, was a Canadian-American businesswoman who founded what is now Elizabeth Arden, Inc., and built a cosmetics empire in the United States. By 1929, she owned 150 salons in Europe and the United States. Her 1,000 products were being sold in 22 countries. She was the sole owner, and at the peak of her career, she was one of the wealthiest women in the world. (From Wikipedia). Those photographs were some models with Elizabeth Arden glasses on. I was born in Edmonton, AB in Canada and to me this is a very average sized mall. Go check out West Edmonton Mall someday. Although it isn't currently abandoned.

And we actually Still have 1 remaining Mall Franklin Park mall in west Toledo area, Malls obviously predates smart phones and some predates the internet all together. It was the social media of the day, acutally being physically social. Ive watched the Malls here in Toledo ohio go from Their peak of glory to gone, mid 1980s to few years past the Millennium. Woodville Mall in Eastern side of Toledo, Southwick malls in the South side of Toledo, and lastly the Northtown Mall in you guessed it... the North side of Toledo. They were the teenager hangout then and would potentially be still today. As im sure many teens still dwell at our Franklin park mall. Cheers.

I thought I recognized it. This place was BANGING back in the day. Me and my friends used to go there all the time. They had a large selection of restaurants in the food courts and they had a really cool billiards ball machine that was two stories high (it sat where the red checkerboard square is). The ball machine has been gone a long time... Wonder what happened to it. We used to go to the cinema there too, but the teenage gangs caused so much trouble that it got a bad reputation and people started avoiding it. An insider told me that some stores signed leases for twice as much per square foot as other nearby locations, and as they lost money, the management wouldn't renegotiate. So Biggs, Burlington etc. all eventually shut down. As everything closed up, the mall walkers used to be pretty thick but I don't think it's available for that anymore either. Really miss that place.

I went there and I was warned by a local that if I walk around there, they will assume that I am there for the same purpose and they will proposition you. There is a reason for that 25 year old boy interviewed at the end of this video was walking around a completely empty mall on a Saturday afternoon. And no- He wasn’t there to relive his childhood. The security confirmed and said he recently they had to call an ambulance because a man had gotten his insides torn up so bad in the old foot locker shoe store.

Down here the restrictive GST tax on Amazon purchases as well as the postage puts Kiwis off from spending their money there. Instead, our malls have remained as popular as they've always been and busy, esp. at lunchtimes. Some American tourists visit this country just to experience our malls believe it or not. As for me, I visit mine every few days. To meet family and friends, buy some groceries or top up on Nespresso sleeves. 🐣 Thanks for the awesome, yet eerie upload guys. 👍🏽

There’s plenty of abandoned malls in the states nowadays, growing up even just from the 2000’s to now, I’ve seen plenty of malls close over time just within my own city.. It’s a very sad truth that nobody wants to face. It’s too expensive to purchase the mall property to demolish the structure that’s no longer safe, so, they just sit and rot, be very careful of places like this sometimes they look fine and are highly structurally unstable

I used to work for a Things Remembered. I engraved, etched glass, and cut keys, all when it was manual. Happy memories and "things remembered." ;) In my latter years is when they started to embroider. Some stores had an embroidery machine. My store we just took the orders and it came from headquarters in Ohio. My store was in Sarasota FL. Sadly, that too is an abandoned mall. Thankfully, there are new plans for the property. My mall only became abandoned when a new mall in a new part of town took over and obliviated the other two malls in town. At one point we had three Macy's stores in town. We still have two.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's in Rochester, NY. Back then, our downtown was wonderful...excellent department stores, 5 & 10 cent stores, that had luncheon counters, and cafeterias, and art deco movie theaters that were eventually demolished. We didn't have a car, so we relied on the bus to take us to these places. When they started building shopping malls in the suburbs, it destroyed downtown Rochester. I'm glad a least I had the chance to experience it before it went away. The one indoor mall they built in downtown Rochester, was Midtown Plaza. It opened for business in 1962. In 2008, it was closed and demolished. When it opened, over a period of time the downtown stores couldn't compete, and they all closed or moved to the malls outside the city. The downtown area became crime-ridden. Many shopping malls in the suburbs of big cities, ended up having to close because of loss of customers, mostly caused by crime. Malls became the hang-outs of teenagers, then gangs. Nobody wanted to go to those places anymore because they weren't safe. I'd been to Brugge and briefly to Brussels during a trip in 2006. You are fortunate that your country still has small shops along the streets that people can visit, and have a more intimate shopping experience. Even strip malls here in this country aren't enjoyable to visit, because you are fighting for parking spaces with people who are overly aggressive, and obnoxious. I hate having to shop online, but am forced to. There are no department stores around here anymore where you can go to look for a better quality leather purse, a winter or spring coat, blouses, skirts, etc. You don't get to see the product in person, feel the fabric, and try it on before you pay for it. They've taken away the personal touch of shopping, that well-knowledged store clerks in the old department stores used to provide the shopper. Most of the sales clerks that worked in Rochester's department stores, had been with those companies for many years and were good at what they did.

It's honestly seriously sad how many people who lived near and went to the mall in their lives oftenly have fun experiences. i mean it's a mall, how could you not have a good time as a teenager just killing time there? But the reality shows how the mall was doing horribly and it was just inevitable to fail by the get go while everyone enjoyed it. It's a major shame the mall failed. It looks so beautiful and well designed.

The picture place was where parents took kids to get their pictures taken. The area in the back was where they took the pictures. There were scene screens with different backgrounds that can be chosen by the parents.

33:25 was a funny moment for me, because I was like, “well, we didn’t have waffle shops in malls back then. It definitely was an Auntie Anne’s!” When they revealed the sign I actually laughed out loud.

Hi Lesley, Danny, Mureno, Ramon !! 😉 Abandoned 2002 Cincinnati Malls in United States!! Our Mall is called MarketPlace Mall in Champaign, Illinois & is Still Open but Has Loss A Lot of Stores...Sears, Penny`s, Things Remembered was in the middle aisle, Claire`s & Few Other Shops!! Kohl`s is at another area in Champaign, IL. We Never had the Movie Theatre In The Mall, was a Separate building & when it Closed was Torn Down, Years Later... was Built in a Different Area in Champaign, IL./ No Police Station was EVER in Our Malls!! Lesley when You Said in United States, We Have Carpet in Our Houses...they are Changing that..Mostly Carpet in Bedrooms Only...but in Our House Only Hardwood Floors & Tile!! This was Exciting Lesley & Danny to See the First Mall Completely Gone Inside, but the 2nd One Should Be Opened.. But Security Guard says Yes to Open More Stores & Guy that Owns his Shop Heard Mall Will Be Torn Down!! Yes People Walk Around the Mall for Exercise All Year Around, We Have Them Too!! Thanks Guys for a Great Journey in the 2 Abandoned Malls!! 😍 Have a Safe Trip to Your Next Journey!!😍 Take care you 2 & Have a Wonderful Evening!! ❤ Love Barb from Central Illinois❣

This mall looks amazing. It's a shame that it was never redone into something. The architecture is truelt well done. Most modern buildings are very bland and smooth. It amazing that this mall still stands.

It is really sad that this strip mall is left to crumble like that. It bustles with the vivid creativity of the postmodern architects of the 70s. It was built at a time when this art style was fully mastered, and was far from the ugly masses of abstract purée of the turn of the century... 4:05 Just look at the neat composition of this honeycomb skylight, it is stratified in geometrical wells, trey ceilings and suspended squares, to the point it comes to have a cubist painting demeanor. 7:44 Ironically, this bent rolling grille blends outstandingly well with the architectural composition! In their simian want of thoughtless appropriation, the vandals unwillingly added to the postmodern harmony of the building.

Hey dear Lesley, I loved watching, how you explored that mall together with Danny. Although I have already seen several vids about huge abandoned malls documented by some of the famous explorers Steve Ronin, Proper People and others. Shopping malls I would call the "cathedrals of consumerism" and I actually don't like them so much. But I can nevertheless see on the other hand the important social purpose of these locations, where people gather together, meeting eachother and enjoying a good time. So I come to the conclusion, that it is very sad to see more and more malls being shut down and left abandoned. In your video I loved seeing the comparison between the completely abandoned mall and then the partially dead mall with just a few active stores. Wonderful to listen to your thoughtful reflections and following you through that enormous building. I couldn't help thinking: What a waste of space and materials. Why can there not be a solution found to repurpose these buildings with that still intact infrastructure? Your idea of using such a location as a community space would be a very good idea to revitalize this place. Great video with your special touch, and I loved once more seeing the great pleasure, the enthusiasm and the unique collab conversations with Danny. Of course I also enjoyed very much to see my other favourite explorers, the boys from Explomo! Stay safe, peace, many hugs and kindest regards from Switzerland.
