We visited a quiet island with an interesting past. A bike trip to the northern side of the island took us to an abandoned mansion, built in 1906. Locals also told us about abandoned WWII bunkers on the island's southern side - we were losing daylight, but made it down in time to see one of the bunker doors open, inviting us in.
I have a lot of fun researching, exploring, and filming these places - thank you for watching and supporting me.

Let’s start In the spring of 1904 when a young, wealthy businessman left the city to go on a short yacht trip with his family and some friends. On the way to their destination, they encountered some engine trouble, and it looked like the weather was turning sour. So they anchored in a small cove - this exact cove actually.
The next day he and his family woke up to a breathtaking view - the sun shining off the ocean from this almost private island. He decided that he would purchase 728 acres here on the north side, and construct a 36 room stone mansion for his family.
But tragically, at the age of 36 he died from pneumonia, and never saw his dream home completed that winter. His family never moved into the mansion, and it changed ownership through the years, until its abandonment in the 1970s.
The island it sits on is rich with history and personality, with only about 300 residents living there year round. It’s still as beautiful as that day in 1904, so we went to explore it.
Locals also told us about abandoned WWII bunkers on the island, and that there was one you could actually get inside. This isn’t uncommon in New England, where many fortifications were built on harbor islands. I covered some of these in my other videos, but I mean, abandoned bunkers are always interesting. The ones on this island were used to store missiles for coastal batteries, so I had a feeling they would be pretty big. So, we went to find those, too.

I've been going to the island since birth and my family since my father was stationed there in the 50's. We were always curious as children about that place and forbidden to go onto that property. Thanks, BTW, for taking me on that tour! Some years ago, before my dad passed away, we walked the old NAVY base. He laughed a little and cried a little, too, telling me the stories of his time there. We walked up to a Quonset hut that my father said housed the barbershop. He and I were taken aback when we looked through a window and saw the antique barber's chair still there frozen in time. there was also the mess hall and barracks. I could see the memories flooding his mind by the look on his face and the stories he told. That's all gone now...daddy, too. I, myself, haven't stepped foot on that island in many years. My mother, who's in her 80's would like to go for one last visit though traveling may prove to be too much. Frankly, I miss it way more than I care to admit. The peace, the step back in time, the quahogging...omg, the quahogging! The fresh seafood, the fishing, the Colony, my friends, the skiing and most of all, the SAILING! UGH...what I'd do for one more summer there... You really need to go back...You never went to the west shore or to see the hatchery, or the one room schoolhouse. You really must get inside the lighthouse as that's another curisoity of mine! I will live vicariously through your eyes, man! Thank You so much for this. You have no idea how much I love & miss that island and my people...To have been there once and feel the way you do, you know exactly how I feel! Happy Exploring to ya!

I’ve also been going here since birth! The Rossi’s opened the mansion it for an Octoberfest a few years ago that I was at and me and my friend went in the basement and like the first couple rooms, I got scared of the wasps and left though 😂 I love the navy base! It’s one of my favorite places to drive through. I’m not sure these men truly realize how many bunkers there actually are though haha

I know the name of this island. Never been there but I formerly lived in Portsmouth RI and recognize a lot of landmarks in this video. I won't write the name here because it's not cool to do so. Good work, Jason! Even a lifelong Rhode Islander like me ( excepting 13 years on Martha's Vineyard, year round ) can learn a lot from your videos. Thanks.

There’s an underground facility that my deceased fiancé’s grandfather was in charge of during WWII...it was built under or in a mountain...MT Norwottuck, I think., also called, “The Notch.” One day when we were walking in these woods, I found a steel door!
