Nothing like this exists in the world. A park replicating Disneyland so much only to be left abandoned and now known for legitimately how creepy it is. This is Nara Dreamland.

The biggest mistake NaraDreamland made was to keep the park as it was after catching wind of the arrival of Disney Tokyo. The moment this shit was confirmed, the instant they found out this going to happen and there was no going back, that was the moment for them to get their designers and engineers and artists and idea men and start coming up with ways to rebrand and reinvent themselves. Like they said in the video, the time for relying on, "Hey, we're not DisneyLand but we're definitely the next best thing!" was over. They needed to act accordingly and act immediately. But they didn't. And that's what killed them.
@leexgx
@leexgx 7 жыл бұрын
If they had made deal with Disney from the start it would of never been closed and Disney would of not built the new park so to make this park die
@sigmaK9
@sigmaK9 7 жыл бұрын
Oh, I agree. They should've never allowed Disney to walk off the set. But he did walk off the set. NaraDreamland only had one of two options once the plans for Disney Tokyo were underway. Beg the Disney Company to buy them out (a move which surely would've saved Disney millions upon millions of construction costs) or re-invent themselves into something other than, "Hey, look at how Disney-like this non-Disney theme park totally is!" Instead, they did nothing. And so the inevitable took care of the rest.

Location, location, location. Were it not for these videos about Nara, I never would have heard of the town. However, everyone has heard of Tokyo. Because of that, it has a bigger and more diverse population, exactly what you want with a theme park. Nara was doomed to fail because it was Nara, not a popular location such as Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka.

They could’ve closed for refurbishment and make an original park that might get at least 1-4 million people. But they didn’t and kept the Disney copy.

Nara Dreamland also had the disadvantage of not easy to get there by public transport, *ESPECIALLY* by passenger rail lines (passenger rail transport is still extremely important in Japan). Tokyo Disneyland/Disney Sea is easily accessible by the JR East Keiyo Line from downtown Tokyo, and Universal Studios is located on the end of the JR West Yumesaki Line, a short train ride from JR West Osaka Station.

That's not going to happen. Nara is a second tier city and is not connected to any major Shinkansen route meaning it is inconvenient for anyone to go there. All the good stuff's along the Shinkansen route like the cities of Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo.

Wow, Walt Disney's wife was right. They should have not gotten too big. I mean look at the heart and core of the company. The films. All they are now are remakes of their classics and sequels. No original ideas. Probably never again the next 25 years. It just goes to show you that if you get too big and success goes to your head, you truly forget who you are and what you originally did to get there. If Walt Disney was still alive, he would both be proud and ashamed of his company.

It also kills any opportunity for business in faraway lands to grow on their own. Large entertainment corporations can just enter the market and decimate it with their bottomless financial clout, driving business away from indigenous ventures. Nara Dreamland wasn't the only causality from Disney's and Universal's entry into Japan's theme park market, but it's certainly the most visible evidence of the problem. That said, you can argue the same point with Japan's corporations entering the American market since the 1960s and sucking out the manufacturing strength of the US with their cheaper, better-built exports. I guess things evened out between America and Japan.

Uh, disney comes out with a new film like every year or two. This year, Zootopia and Moana, last year was Inside Out, year before that was big hero 6, then Frozen, along with a bunch of minor releases. Point is, Disney makes a plethora of new ideas every single year.

In the mid-80s a park opened just north of Perth called "Dizzy Lamb" park. Me, being about 6 years old at the time COMPLETELY fell for the "Disneyland" soundalike and insisted we visited (I'm sure I wasn't the only kid). It was a pretty lacklusture park with koalas and a kiddie ferris wheel and a car ride but not much else, and it closed sometime in the late 90s/early 2000s and was abandoned for a while, now it's a paintball range. So yeah, even the most cheapass parks can profit off of Disneyland, at least for a while.

It's a pretty fun Theme Park management series about the cast and crew struggling to turn the park around. Can only assume the writer didn't want it to go the way it did.

I understand some (Bosnia/Sarajevo) being awful and some just plain aged (Berlin, etc.) but Russia and most shockingly Athens from '04 is really bad (I understand the recession, but dang). If you knew anything about history, you would know that it started out as a partnership with Disney in which Walt Disney himself and the imagineers designed about 90% of the park. It was about 80% complete when licensing fee disputes came about and Disney pulled out because the Japanese company didn't want to pay the royalties Disney was asking. So they quickly changed it from Disneyland to dream land and finished the last 20%

I'll sum up the story. I'll go into some detail, but not a lot to keep it short. So, Centralia was a thriving town with about 2000 residents, their ancestors being coal miners who settled there, in a forest of the backwoods of rural Pennsylvania. Once technology started advancing, a way to get rid of their garbage was to dump it somewhere and burn it in an open area, in order to prevent forest fires. One time in 1962, while burning some trash, they had done it so many times that trash managed to slip into one of the now abandoned coal mines. The coal caught fire, and they were unable to reach the burning coal because of the mines have long since collapsed. So, the state came in to do the job, and they drilled holes to examine where the fire was. The fire was almost under control, but the state decided to drill holes into the ground, powering the fire with more oxygen. In 1982, a large sinkhole appeared in somebody's yard, so the last straw was to get everyone out of there. 10 people stayed, and ignored the state, and remain there to this day. The fire however, will never end, as it has enough fuel to burn for over 200 years, and it is too hot to put out the flaming coal.

I was going to write that it's sad to leave the monorail sitting like that, but I guess after such a long time the best you can do is scrap it, since it'll be damaged beyond repair.

After seeing Exploring With Josh's video on Nara Dreamland, I really wanted to go there and look around. I tried to go to Japan through a school trip, but I couldn't. Its so sad to hear now that it has been demolished. My dreams of coming here are shattered to say the least. But, I do know that there are plenty of other places I can explore, just like how there are many fish in the sea.

Im just gonna say this before I click play, this has the potential to be the ultimate cream episode of this entire channel. For years, the random notion that you would ever visit Nara dreamland popped in and out of my head - nothing more than figment of my imagination. Thank you for plucking the premise for this video directly from the depths of my wildest subconscious.

Sad feels for Nara, it was a loving homage to Disneyland. The Japanese do enjoy being quirky it seems with their choices of what parts of American culture to bring over there.

The concept of Disney Sea was actually created for Disneyland. When Michael Eisner was still CEO, he wanted to create a sea-based theme park on the west coast (called WestCot - like Epcot - not sure if I spelled it right), but when Euro Disneyland opened as a big failure, he decided not to. When the company started planning a second park for Tokyo Disneyland, they brought back out the concept for that park.

Great video! Never disappoint as always! But something confuses me. Was there any sort of legal trouble between Walt Disney and the owner of Nara Dreamland? Cause it's sounds like they're would've been cause they copied key landmarks of Disneyland and I don't know if Disney let them had the rights to do so or what.

Bright Sun Films It just seems odd to me that they copied their signature castle and supposedly got away with it cause I would think the Disney company had some sort of trademark or copyright on that. Like I feel like they would've sued them for something like that. But I'm also really into law and conspiracy theories, which is why I thought of it.

Sleeping Beauty castle in Anaheim is based on Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Disney can't copyright the look of the castle itself because it isn't theirs to begin with. But that's also why they built Cinderella castle in Tokyo, because THAT is copyrighted.

If I’m remembering this correctly, the construction of the park was almost complete by the time licensing fell through. That’s why there was such a scramble to remove Disney branding despite everything looking so similar.

Disney should of built a Disney Land where Ontario Place use to be, they would make a killing. The Ripleys Aquarium in downtown Toronto is by far one of the worst aquariums I’ve been to and it still makes a killing because of its location.
