I'm from Clearfield myself, but Austin, Sinnamohning, and Potter County is absolutely gorgeous. I love driving through there. I just passed the dam and the paper mil on 872. The history of the mil and dam are just dreadful and amazing at the same time. You can feel it out there among all the ruins.

the "12 o'clock-noon" whistle blows every day-as the mill did when in its heyday of production- was told by town resident that it has been kept as a tribute out of respect for the lives lost to the industry that caused the flood by allowing hap-hazard work when building the dam. great video!

Hi Cliff, wow that big building with the columns looked amazing inside, the contrasting sunlight and shade really made the features stand out. Mixed with all of the natural decay of the building itself and the various plant life, there are many opportunities to take some stunning photographs. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx💖

I love the dam and the old mill. It's probably been 20 years or so since I took that same walk you did into the mill. Let me tell you. Those stairs were sketchy back then. A little worse now. It is a fascinating place for sure and the history of it is incredible. My family bought an old farmhouse below Austin after the flood. They got it real cheap since the entire main floor was packed with mud that had to be dug out by hand. Half the 2nd floor as well. It ha been a camp ever since. It sits right along 872 between Austin and Wharton. The farmhouse eventually got torn down as it was getting too expensive to maintain and a modular home was put in it's place. I remember as a kid seeing the difference in the trees and vegetation all through that valley. You could see how high the water was miles and miles below the dam. If you look closely around the George B. Stephenson dam you can still tell how high the water was there. It's crazy to think how much water came with such can incredible force. Very few had time to get to safety. I love the history of the Austin dam and all of Potter County. Great video even if you had the technical difficulties!

The town welcomed Bayliss with open arms, because he promised a lot of jobs. Timber companies had clear cut the area years earlier, and the idea was that new growth trees would not be good for timbering, but could be used for making paper. Bayliss' operation required an immense amount of water a day - which is why he wanted the dam as high as possible. I think he believed there was more flow in the creek than there actually was. I was at this location 4 months ago, but didn't have the guts to go off the road and bushwhack to the factory ruins. Glad you did and I can experience it this way. There was a very informative man with exhibits down at the dam ruins when I visited. I expected there was a large amount of remains of the factory. Those holes could be for wastewater related to processing pulp.

Potter County seems to be full of history. I noticed how at Lyman Run you didn't mention that Cherry Springs was just up the hill and its a national dark spot for observing the sky. We camped at Lyman Run and drove up to Cherry Springs to observe. I live in the NJ Pine Barrens and there is so much abandoned history here, too. Colonial states and areas where industry changed so much that the population moved to follow the industrial revolution.

The building 5 minutes in reminded me of an old abandoned sawmill in Angelina National Forest here in Texas. The concrete (or style) that they used at the time was supposed to be something new. Needless to say, most of the structures have stood long after the town has gone. One of the buildings is even home to bats.

That place does have a crumbling beauty. The light and glowing green against the brick and concrete are quite artful, as is the reclaiming of masonary by nature. Returning the pebbles and clay to the earth we extracted them from. I love this stuff. Now that I'm older I see how fast time reclaims our human efforts. What seemed like ancient history to me as a teen now appears to be such rapid decay! I have to tell you how grateful I am for your vids. I am a new Pennsylvanian, and someone who used to hike and adventure widely. Today I have such arthritic knees that I cannot get out there much. I can make a bout a 1/4 mile hike with pain & effort. So you are my eyes and ears! Be safe, and keep on exploring.

I am trying to imagine how 100+ years ago they would be able to load all of that steel rebar up there to build those structures. And can you imagine how, in another 2-300 years the cement will probably al be crumbled and the steel rebar will be all that remains, in a crusty form. Wow.

Amazed that there is no warning signs near this ruins as it is very dilapidated and with the over grown growth and shrubs near it and snakes you really need to watch where you are walking. Other then that, thanks for sharing the next part of this history and look forward to next video. Loved the "whistle blow" and thought for a minute Whats that? Thanks Cliff and take care!

Definitely. You, (or anyone exploring places like that) need to be extra super-duper double careful, and even more careful than that actually, with all those unmarked holes in the ground. All it would take is not paying full attention for even a second or two to possibly step right into an open hole, especially if one is shooting a video (youtube or otherwise) . Stay safe my friends.

Amazing exploration, loaded with many interesting things. It's hard to imagine back in the mill's working days it was bustling with lots of activity, many people, traffic and producing tons of product. No matter what human's build, given enough time, God's wonderful creation will replace with vibrant life. All of that growth began as small plants and seeds and now they slowly, but surely, reclaiming the land. Oh... you want someone to yell at you for taking a possibly dangerous route that could have resulted in broken bones or worse? Wasn't going to do it, but okay if that's what you want...DON'T DO THAT AGAIN....off to the naughty corner with you. Speaking of bones, the ones downstairs added more than a pinch of creepy to a already strange lower level.

Great video, I really enjoyed all of it, I wonder how it's legal for any construction project to have numerous inspection during construction of any building, but when the building is abandoned, nothing is in place to enforce it's deconstruction,or it's removal and can remain standing for decades to rot away, and can also be a Hazzard.. but just my thoughts.. peace and God bless you...
