A small collection of pictures of abandoned Railway Stations throughout the UK.I dare say there are many more that have gone wayside that I haven't collected .As times change so it makes way to create our past and give us great memories.

One of the main reasons why this country succeeded in the past around the world is because of building railways and to see this is so sad ! It was the back bone of Britain and look at it now ! How serene and how sad !

Check out the regeneration going on at Folkestone Harbour - they are doing an amazing job of turning a derelict area into something useable 👌👍

They need demolition and the land landscaping. Then it can be repurposed for something useful like houses, offices, or shops.

Reference to Highgate High Level After the war, London Transport had every intention of completing their New Works plan and although several lines, including the Alexandra Palace branch were shown 'under construction' on some underground maps until 1950 work never restarted. On 3rd July 1939 the existing northern line service was extended from Archway to East Finchley where it surfaced alongside the LNER line from Finsbury Park just south of the station. The steam trains which formerly served High Barnet and Edgware was cut back to East Finchley and after March 1941 all trains were diverted to Alexandra Palace instead but this improvement in service was short lived with all through trains were withdrawn and once again replaced by a limited shuttle.

In about 1967 I was having a mournful walk round Mortehoe & Woolacombe and I found the running in board: the large enamel station name board, in some undergrowth. It was in two portions. "How can I get this Home?" I wondered. My mate refused to tie it to the car roof. I was really gutted to leave it behind. No doubt some lucky local sneaked it home. I think the station's a children's playschool now. Perhaps it's screwed to the wall inside.

Many old stations could be reopened and used to work light railways. It would be a boon to the local communities taking traffic off overcrowded roads and ease pollution. Many could have been mothballed but no-one had the vision to forsee a time when our roads would become overcrowded.

John James they were closed because not enough people used them, and that was in an era of lower car usage. Many trains were replaced by bus services, which also stopped due to lack of passengers. What makes you think that anything has changed in these rural locations?

Good News - there is a Station on the Monsal Trail (used to be a Midland railway line running between Buxton all the way to Matlock but the Monsal Trail officially goes from Blackwell Mill to Bakewell) Hassop Station has been turn into 3 separate business, A cycle hire shop, a Book shop & a Café. There is 6 Stations Along the Monsal Trail (the old Midland Railway Line) Blackwell Mill (What said to be Britain smallest Station), Millers Dale Station (The largest Station on this Line with 5 Platforms but only 3 survive today), Monsal Dale Station - with only 1 of 2 platforms surviving today, Great Longstone Station (the booking office now a private house), Hassop Station which I've just said about above & Bakewell Station (The main station building has used by a electronic company.

Thank you for this somewhat melancholy but very interesting video. Back in the 1950s I vacationed on the cheap by cycling from Norfolk to the Bath area, staying at YHA youth hostels, then very numerous. I stayed at one decommissioned railway station turned into a hostel, in East Anglia or the Fen Country--I can't remember exactly where now. Maybe Suffolk? It was a small single-story building turned into a six-bunk hostel. I had booked ahead, and the warden (presumably part-time) had cycled in to let me in. My bunk was in the old waiting room. The stationmaster's office and booking office were also utilized. When night came, to ensure my safety (I was the only guest), he locked me in and cycled away. When I turned off the gaslight, it was a bit spooky, but no ghosts! In the morning he cycled back to let me out. How many viewers of this video have been privileged to spend the night alone in a railway station-turned-youth hostel? I once tried to look it up on the YHA (or whatever the name is now) Web site, but it seems to have been closed, and I wonder what has happened to the building. It was all on its own in the middle of rather bleak flat farming country, with no village or indeed other habitation anywhere near.

The second photo you say is Newtyle Station, is not! What you are looking at is the two single lines that ran north of Newtyle, the one on the left to Adler junction and to Perth. This is on a higher level, hense the retaining wall, than the line to the right, which is the Dundee & Newtyle line to Alyth Junction station, for the branch to Alyth and mainline to Aberdeen via Forfar and Kinnaber Junction.

In some places where there is a need, public transportation is being expanded, and rail is more fuel-efficient than buses. While some rail rights-of-way have already been lost, those that remain should be kept for future use. Restoring some of the beautiful stations would be costly, but they should at least be stabilized to minimize deterioration.

2231wardy the long edale trail/transpennine trail from Hadfield to the woodhead tunnels, that is an old disused rail line, and you'll come to a bit where you cross the road, keep walking, then you'll come to the top of the dam, when you start to walk down the hill you'll see a station house and an old platform to your right hand side, and just before you get to the tunnels, there are 2 more platforms, and the 3 tunnels as well we're where trains used to run through before they came electrified. but little exploration there if you fancy it.

Three of these old stations are NOT in England. Aboyne is in the North-east of SCOTLAND, just west of Aberdeen. Newtyle, is not far away to the north of Dundee. The Ely Valley is in South WALES. The names alone of the Scots ones should give the clue that they're not in England and the Ely Valley (or Taff-Ely) is a well known part of Wales. DOH!

Abandoned Railway Stations of Britain would be a more accurate title, and less likely to offend the Scots. That said, it's a nice compilation of photos although always disheartening to see an abandoned station. Barnstaple though is now a school facility & has its external features restored. If plans to restore the Lynton & Barnstaple railway ever come to fruition it may return to its former use yet.

these old staions and tracks need renationalising to which local young people can work on them and stop the crappy subsidies to private rail firms and bring back jobs cheap transport and revitalise the areas. railways should never be run as a profit making business merely a tool or service for local people to go about there travels and make people proud of working and seeing the benefits together... i love railways. elect Jeremy corbyn and he can give us the people who would use it our network

What a tragedy that hundreds of miles of disused lines through the countryside weren't given to the public for hiking after the rails were ripped up. I once explored a section on foot between the eastern outskirts of Leicester to Tilton but it was badly chopped up by fences farmers had put across it. Who gave them the right?
